'Hotlinking Wank' or, 'How Rupionic Learned to Love the Taste of Shoeleather'
Rupionic, on the Evils of Hotlinking.

Rupionic hasn't got a clear understanding of what precisely hotlinking is. I can't really talk; I usually whimper and take my technical issues to [info]eljuno.
The thing is, Rupionic thought that her research had led her to a thorough understanding of the subject, as we can see from her Epistle to the Hotlinkers, above. It even has its own kitten reference and humorous graphic, which I can guarantee you someone will hotlink.

The wankery starts here, with Lafeemechante telling people to 'be a sport' and take the extra 30 seconds to gack an image properly rather than hotlink. Looks innocent? Sure it does! Scroll down a mite and you see the gloves come off as she and Cypher smack each other around here. Accusations of 'heinous bitchery' abound! As you scroll down, the whole mess just keeps degenerating. I swear, I'm expecting a violation of Snacky's Law any second now.

The whole wank is shortish, but it might grow. I've got the very highest hopes for it.

This wank brought to you by a mousie in the most recent Debunkingwhite wank, and the letter F.

Man, who put their tampon in Cypher's Red Bull? That girl has issues. Made me wish for Wing Chun's banstick, which she pulled out any time someone began a post with "Um" or a variant thereof.

I think the whole issue with her was sort of a "Who Shot First" scenario. I think if I'd pointed something out and some bitch's friends all did a dog pile on me, I'd be plenty pissed. Which is why when I wank, I tell my friends that I'm a big girl and to kindly stay the fuck out of it

Honestly, she didn't start getting bitchy until rupiconic make the fuck-bucket-dumb statement that she wasn't incorrect, but had a different opinion. And frankly that'd drive me up the wall too.

I keep wanting to make a joke about FFF and KKK, but I can't figure out if it would be in Very Bad Taste or not. :-(

I like it when an LJ owner repeatedly tells someone to leave, but is too stupid to ban or screen.

But banning and screening takes away from the draaaaaaama. We can't have that!

...Look what you did! Now they have screened what I assume was the wank. :(

Why would anyone want to make an entire post and then every comment in tiny text? WHY? grrr. I shouldn't have to hit ctrl + three times just to be able to read the damn post, and it is all about me, right?

i think it should be made a rule. if someone feels the need to start off a comment with "uh", you have no obligation whatsoever to be polite. it's rude, and it's condescending.

Right...

What is up lafeemechante's ass? This has nothing to do with anything that was posted before that.

Sigh, what would I do without these idiots to entertain me?

It was the way someone dared to politely point out an error in her friend's post. Disagreement is disrespect, yo. You gots to represent.

...Or something.

I don't get it, either. But then, I'm two decades out of junior high.

I think her idea is that starting a comment with "Uh" imparts a patronizing tone to the whole message, no matter how civil the rest of the post is.

She's pouncing on it because it gives her an excuse to be as rude and nasty as she's evidently spoiling to be.

Twisk

You know, it's really not that hard to find a definition of Bandwidth Theft

True, but being completely wrong makes her PSA all the more pathetic and self-serving. I mean, when I saw it up at icon_tutorial, I rolled my eyes and muttered about another lame-ass idiot trying to be smart.

*squints*

Call me dim, but what part of her definition is wrong, then?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]greypearl
2005-06-11 03:58 pm UTC (link)
I think that her original definition involved using the example of entering a URL of an image to upload an icon to LJ. She edited it after someone pointed out that this wasn't really hotlinking. But I'm not sure what her original wording was, so I'm only gathering this from what was said in the comments.

As greypearl says, her original post was different - she's edited it. I can't remember the exact wording of it, but it was more like "Bandwidth Theft Bad! Not that I know why! But if you do it, you may get the Substitute Graphic of Doomful Embarrassment!" and that was it.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]lurker32

Ah, that makes sense.

The trouble with the "upload from URL" option is that, to the uninitiated, it looks exactly like the "enter URL of remotely hosted image" option that most message boards have, where doing that IS hotlinking. LJ just automatically transloads the image onto its own server -- but it doesn't explicitly say that on the upload page, so it's easy to assume that it is hotlinking.

Anyway.

I enjoy how lafeemechante's mode of attack is, "You suck and you have icons of yourself! Oh! Burned!"

Because only the elitist icon-making, lowercase-loving, unreadable-font-size-using crowd would consider that to be an insult of the highest degree.

Oh no! Say what you will about me, but please don't attack my icons!

if you don't feel like this is the right definition to hotlinking, go and post your OWN. don't waste hours on end arguing with me about how it's wrong. i went out of my way to do this.

I LOOKED IT UP ON A WEBSITE.

It must be true.
