Spinning wheel, turning round
If you thought knitting wank was fun, then hold onto your hats because we've got spinning wank! That's right folks, the noble art of making string has descended into the pits of VM that they so carefully avoid.

It all starts here where [info]eris_devotee 'outs' a community member [info]mnsfibers as "producing sub-par product" and then selling it to unwitting consumers. She dosen't stop there, however, but also goes on to post the same message in the [info]crochet community.

All heck breaks loose when the anonymice show up to defend the accused and then pitch a fit over the "public IP" feature of the anonymous posting and [info]eris_devotee's need to post the IP address of every.single.anonymouse. It dosen't help any that the OP has a history of posting and commenting in an incendiary fashion.

The accused decides to plea her case at the knitty boards where she gets all the love and support she so desperately seeks.

overall, there's enough asshattery from both sides to make for a nice meal of schadenfreude. mmm..schadenfreude.

~QB who thinks schadenfreude should be in JF's spell check

The thing that gets me is that Josi (eris_devotee) doesn't know shite about handspinning, and has put herself in the middle of a case where the purchaser never even *asked* for a refund/return- she only asked what to do do remove the greasiness if I'm reading the comments right.

To me, they look like novelty high/low twist yarns- hard to handle, a real challenge to wash, but exactly as advertised. (These were *very* popular back in the 70's, when I first became involved with spinning.)

If the purchaser was disappointed then she should have asked for a return. If that was refused and the customer was left unsatisfied *then* Josi might have justification for her shit-stirring.

Bitches like her are precisely the reason I'm no longer active in fiber communities.

Sorry. I'll go clean up now.

I'm hesitant to be on Josi's side in this, cause I find her methods/tone/behavior/etc. to be extremely unappetizing, however, I really can't disagree with her core message.

The lanolin isn't the issue for me, since the seller described the yarn as having lanolin and I know some items are knit specifically with yarn all loaded with lovely lanolin goodness. I just can't look at those slubs and honestly feel that they'll have any integrity once knitted/crocheted. The staple length just dosen't look long enough to support such large slubby areas, especially when paired with such tight overspun regions. I mean, the crimp on that yarn is awesome and could make a really fluffy and warm yarn, which could have been part of the original spinner's problem. Learning to deal with super-crimp is definitely something that takes alot of practice.

I guess I just worry about spinners and people selling their handspun getting a bad rap, deservedly or not, since it's a craft I truly love and want to preserve.

I hear you, and frankly Josi's attitude *really* turned me against her case.

I started spinning back around 1975-76, right in the middle of the bicentennial celebration, and back then, most of what people were producing looked like that. Part of it was the lousy materials we could get (Mostly Suffolk and other meat breeds unless you were unusually lucky) and part was that people *wanted* it to look handmade.

Clear disclosure of exactly *what* a handspun yarn is is part of the problem with marketing it. Yarns a knitter might love might look like trash to a weaver a lacemaker or a macrame artist. Learning to tailor your spinning to the task at hand and produce a consistent yarn is one of the greatest challenges of spinning. (IMHO)

definitely so. I've been spinning for a year now and have thin/laceweight yarn down pat. I'm going to try to move to thicker yarns and then onto novelty. It's ironic how we all start out with making 'novelty' yarn and then have to re-learn how to do it once we've 'mastered' the consistent yarns.

Part of it was the lousy materials we could get (Mostly Suffolk and other meat breeds unless you were unusually lucky) and part was that people *wanted* it to look handmade.

ahh, the meat breeds. I have some friends in animal science who when I started spinning were "I can get you some wool if you want." I had to politely decline and went into a long ramble on staple length, fineness and how those relate to a comfy yarn. Plus I had little desire to process my own wool, apartment living combined with not having the correct pointy implements makes fiber prep difficult. Now if they had offered kashmir goat fur.....

Pygoras have actually gone begging for homes around here- a few people got overzealous breeding their backyard animals and the market got a bit flooded. Shame. The things are cute, and most ended up as goat stew.

I'm lucky- I live in Michigan, and Frankenmuth is a pleasant day trip. There is a wool mill there that will process your fibers for a reasonable fee. I haven't done that in years, but it is a nice option to have.

When I decide to 'get basic', I enjoy playing with my Viking and English woolcombs- combed top suits my spinning style better than carded roving. Lately most of what I spin is 'walking' work with the drop spindle, fine enough that my friends who embroider go crazy for the stuff. I order 'wooly buns' or buy other small sample packs with lots of colors so I can make them happy.
I guess I'm in Gandi's (sp?) camp here- spinning, when I'm inclined, is a soothing meditation for me. I just love playing with fibers.

Suffolk? I learned to card with Suffolk wool and got fiber cuts; stuff is like jute!

On the other hand, carded Suffolk wool makes a dandy cover for the core of a really de luxe floor cushion.

no kidding. I mean, out of all the disney villians she's to bad-assiest. She's cool, calm, collected, can turn into a kick ass dragon and her bird dosen't talk. Her only fault? Trying to take out the hero herself. We all know that never works.

I'd never heard of that game, but after googling it sounds neat. Damn my lack of gamesystem-ness.

I also like Sleeping Beauty for the music and art style, totally bitchin.

I'll admit I'm a novice knitter and know jack about spinning, but I'm kinda curious. How does one bad transaction equal a person is a lousy evil spinner? Several people have posted stating happiness with mnsfibers' yarn, so many this one was a fluke, or the buyer didn't read the description well enough and was expecting something else.

I do think that colors_ chick is an idiot for going after eris_devotee the way she did, but it's Eris who I want to haul off an smack. I do think she's doing this for attention trying to push her idea of "standards"
