Fun with Live Journal Status Posts!
You know whenever one of these are posted there are junior displays of wankery within. As usual, [info]news has smidges of wank here and there.

This time it begins on the first page in response to this bit in the initial post here:
As some of you have noticed, we mentioned in our last status post that we would make people agree to the new Terms of Service in the near future. However, after talking with our lawyers about it, we decided that we don't actually need everyone to agree to the Terms of Service all over again -- continued use of LiveJournal constitutes an on-going agreement.

In a fairly valid complaint by [info]jbsegal:

You know... I don't like this very much. The implication is that you could go and change the ToS anytime you wanted without actually notifying us, leaving it as out responsibility to notice when they happen to change, so that if you decided to become evil, claim ownership of our homes, children and writings and if we didn't happen to notice this and say "No thanks", you'd take it as implied consent.

That's probably legal. It's not very ethical. Please consider changing this policy... at the very least a number of big loud posts in places people CAN NOT miss saying "The ToS is changing on such-and-so date. If you use the service within a week or 5 after that time, you are accepting it."

(Also, I've been waiting for YEARS for ESD, which people keep promising every time I bring it up. Is there any news on this front? Really... Please?)

It's not that wanky until [info]kinnerc chimes in after a few posts with:

In this day and age no screwing with our rights is minor. That's how 1930s Germany got started...and how the United States is going.

Yup kids, plans for Journalitz death camp are in the works. Stay tuned!

[info]kerpal, who must be a F_W-er, responds with:

You brought up naziism in an internet debate, therefore you are banned from participating any further.

Besides, comparing a private journalling service with a government with the means and will to opress and slaughter people is not only ridiculous, but insulting to those who have actually experienced such things. Your LiveJournal account and its contents are not remotely similar in importance to the lives of "inferior races".

[info]kinnerc refuses to see the light and goes on wanking away:

Only if you don't open your eyes. Most people never see the beginning connections until it is far, far too late. And knowing personally two people who lived through Nazi Germany I've always found it very interesting that they are appalled at how blind the majority of Americans are to what is currently happening around them.

And:

You can't even imagine the larger issues, can you?

And, being one of those "inferior races" who where lessened by 2,000,000 in the 1930s, and who Bush and the Republicans are actively discriminating against today, the connections and the road we are moving on is very clear to me.

LiveJournal and its TOS practices are not the issue here. The issue is that this "oh, it doesn't matter" attitude is indicative of a sheep society which allows repressive organizations to thrive and gain control. And please don't make the assumption that only a government has power over your life, especially in this overly-capitalistic society!

Oooh, internet law breaking AND Bush bashing. He's going for the gold, ladies and gentlemen!

Things start to sober up until the momentary reprieve of [info]suppafly:

godwin's law is an observation, not some kind of game you can lose or something that can ban you from participating.

also he said 30's in germany, ie WWI era, not nazi era.

Uh, did WWI go on longer than I'd thought? *note to self; see if there's truth to this or this person is just stupid*

An amusing soul named [info]tastypuppies, (whose icon fits the name) responds to [info]suppafly's first paragraph with:

....but it should be though. the stupidity is so overwhelming that I would support that :P

Can't argue with that!

After this things get boring after that until an anonymouse (with an account, which seems ironic) comes in with:

The TOS are subject to change at any time and it's your responsibility to review them periodically. Or did you not read the TOS when you signed up? This is the way everyone does it.

Welcome to the internets.

It's worth reading that sub thread if only for the Ronald McDonald GIF.

People keep on arguing, pissily but not wankily (look mommy, I made my own adverbs!), until things burn themselves out.

The rest of the thread is the usual "Yay, I'm posting" garbage and serious comments. Personally I was just diving in there to complement [info]veroz on hir cute as a button Frank the Goat mood theme

Stupid.

That's my vote, anyway.

One, why does everyone misunderstand Godwin's Law?

Two, sometimes comparisons to Nazi Germany are valid. Not this time, though.

Not when the person making the comparisons thinks WWI went until the 1930s.

Didn't you know that nothing happened, anywhere, between 1919 and 1939?

also he said 30's in germany, ie WWI era, not nazi era.

Maybe I'm wrong here but last time I cracked open a history book, the 1930's did not count as WWI era.

IIRC (and I very well might not), the Nazi era began in 1933 when Hitler became chancellor and the Nazi banned all the other parties. Before that would have been the Weimar era, I think. Certainly not WWI.

Just about then, and yes. I took a fabulous class on Nazi Cinema a year ago. Also, either the Cubs or the Red Sox won their last World Series before their long dry spells then, so that could help date it. (The other one was near the end of WWII. Coincidence?)

Red Sox beat the Cubs in the World Series in 1918. Cubs last won it in 1908.

...I googled it, because I live with Cubs fans and that just sounded off. XD You were right about it being one of them, but it's been even longer for Chicago.

I think one could make a case for the Nazi era starting anywhere from 1930 to 1933, but certainly no later. The Nazis were a major force, but not yet THE major force, in German politics starting with the elections of September 1930, when they became from almost nowhere the second-largest party with 18.3% of the votes. The nazis became the only player starting with the March 1933 elections (that's 2.5 years, folks. Right fucking quick.) when they got 44% of the vote for the Reichstag, and immediately set about moving powers from the Reichstag to the Cabinet and Hitler personally, and soon after with the death of the President, also his duties.

The WWI era definitely ends no later than 1919, with the Treaty of Versailles. The time in between, in German history, would be the Weimar Republic era. More generally worldwide, you'd probably divide it up as the Interbellum until '38 or '39, and WWII from then on.
