Wow. This is a big one.

So City_Glitter's cat is badly burned by some asshole. She posts about it in her journal:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/city_glitter/844427.html

It turns out that her cat will live though the vet bills will be high. So apparently one of her friends, Manhattan, kindly suggested setting up a paypal for donations.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/manhattan/1140641.html

The Vet bills were said to be around $5,000 but within a few days, enough generous people contributed to cover the costs. (Note, I don't know how much of the $5k she needed but her post mentions that enough had been raised.)

But not everyone is buying the story. Foxfur makes a skeptical post:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/foxfur/116753.html

I'm sure we can imagine how that went over.

But it turns out Foxfur may have been right to suspect.

Today City_Glitter posts that her cat was never burned and it was all an experiment to restore her father's faith in humanity.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/city_glitter/847289.html

Needless to say, a lot of people are very unhappy.

[eta] She makes another post saying that she expected everyone to believe Foxfur.

To be honest, I expected everyone to go read that post and to believe her. All of her evidence is well-thought-out, well-researched, and makes perfect sense. Furthermore, it took a great deal of courage for her to report the wrong of something she considered a close friend had done. I didn't expect for anyone not to believe her, and certainly didn't expect anyone to rip into her, flame her, and make her life Hell about it.

What I'm struck by is how much the people who got taken in are beating themselves up for it, even though it was a pretty convincing story. It's painful to watch.

There's a post in note_to_cat about the scam, which is how I found out.

I will repeat what I said over there: Holy shit, that's horrifying.

As soon as I saw this posted here I knew there'd be no cat. I guess that's why I find it overly obvious that the cat was named Schrödinger.

What's depressing me about this is that while manhattan - one of my older internet friends - is beating herself up about this, another of my internet friends apparently hasn't seen CG's confession and is attacking foxfur and various others still and has made several angry and unpleasant posts on my flist.

Makes me want to defriend all of LJ and sit in a cave somewhere. *SCOWL*

It's amazing how someone can claim something was done to restore one person's faith in humanity, while it confirmed for hundreds of others that their faith was misplaced.

What a deformed troglodyte.

It really makes me mad. I mean, here I am trying to raise money so that people can extend their lives for a few years and have a better quality of life by running a fucking marathon and raising money for AIDS care and clincs. And I'm doing it by being honest and undertaking a huge physical effort. Along waltzes someone with a sob story (granted, of extreme cruelty) and in 48 hours, through the kindness of strangers, raises more money than I have in four months of letter writing, LJ spamming and event planning. This sort of crying wolf mockery makes it just that much harder for someone in need to get help.

After setting a record at the animal shelter I used to work at for fundraising, when I raised five hundred dollars in a month, standing outside our local grocery store pretty much begging? After a recent incident that left my bird traumatised, injured and sick and me with vet bills that I'm going to be paying off for a good six months?

I have no sympathy for this girl. Period. The word I want to call her is not one that I will use in public.
