Horse Community Wank
I'm on several horse communities.. They seem to have a higher percentage of know-it-alls than the average population, for some reason, and none of them have mastered the craft of STFU. They're very quick to point out when someone is OMGWRONG about something, or is OMGABUSING their horse. Every so often, the pot boils over, and the whole community explodes.

This particular wank apparently starts here, when an innocent bystander posts pictures in a community for squeeing over pictures. Someone informs her that her polo wraps (the yellow things on the horse's legs in the third picture) are OMGWRONG. The OP doesn't seem to take offense, but someone sure does! I'd skim out the highlights, but it's all pretty funny.

[ETA -- bahleeted! I have it saved, with collapsed comments and everything.

Main page is here. Collapsed threads are here, here, and here. Contains such gems as this:

"Regardless, I'm leaving the boards. I've just gotten an email from another potential client, and there's two more horses that have just been added to my workload. Have a look at my personal journal if you'd like to get off of your fat ass and read some more.
And for once, I can say that you are a FAT ASS without worrying about what you'll say, because I won't be here to read it!"
]

Meanwhile, back at the farm (Equestrian, the biggest horse community, to which everyone from the spin-off coms already belongs)....

Kinkybeaver posts a joke about training methods, which is not well recieved. At all. Hell, just read the whole thing; a good portion of it's wanky. Not so much the advice, but the "don't you know ANYTHING about horses?" tone. The OP is actually a good sport and manages to stay pretty civil through it all. (I participated in the comments a little, but I thought this was more OTF than i_wank.)

Some people are fed up with the bitching. Which is all well and good until reiterin decides to bring up, for no apparent reason, the wank from the other community. Wasn't that constructive?

For those unfamiliar with horses and horse training: there are a million different ways to accomplish every training goal, so of course there are a million different factions that like to fight over whose way is the One True Way. On earth, very few training methods are actually abusive. But who knows about all those other planets.

ETA2

The wank goes ever on and on....

And now we have "I'm leaving, and you're all dumb. FATASS!"

ETA3

Found some more. Different verse, same as the first. My favorite line:

you see saw people are FOOLS.

These people need to get off my side.

It is! With a side of "if you haven't written a better fic, you have no right to criticize." And a bit of "my poor, precious feelings are hurt by constructive criticism. From now on I want only positive reviews."

My God, it's like my local eventing association's monthly meetings brought to life. Only we do all of our passive-agressive bitching over margaritas.

The girl in Australia who was forced to post an entire explanatory entry about the depth of sand in her arena because people thought *from a picture* that they could tell her footing was cruelly damaging her horses gave me bad flashbacks to screaming matches at shows about the exact depth and grain of sand in the outdoor dressage arena.

Yeesh. Horse people sure have the market in socially-maladept know-it-allism cornered.

Margaritas are definitely the way to go. I wonder how this crowd would handle an actual face-to-face confrontation without the keyboard mediating.

I continue to stand by my position that animal people are wankier than the wankiest tin-hats. It's a toss up as to who is worse - dog people or horse people.

Horse people. They have the money to make them think they're right, but the increase of money decreases the amount of time spent with the animal, thus increasing the likelihood that they are, in fact, WRONG.

Is it wrong that I'm now glad I keep all my riding, horse stories and teaching stories to myself?

Holy leadlines... I have to agree what happened to respect for methods?

Oh... and for the comms... here's a clue: What works for one horse (even of the same breed) won't necessarily work for another. Just because your buckskin or TW was trained 'this' way doesn't mean my buckskin or TW will react the same way to the same training.

And you're right, they need to learn the art of STFU.

Ha ha! Those polo wraps look exactly the way mine always did on my horse- she was double Doc Bar bred, and had teeeeeny little cannons, so unless I made custom polos they poofed out.

Also, I find it extremely ironic, now that I actually play polo, that nobody cares how they are wrapped when playing, because they use them for protection not support. Actually, very few players use them anyways, because compared to PC SMB's, they suck ass, and, generally, if one is not a poor student like me one has enough money to support a polo string and pay club fees, what's spending $100 on a set of boots so you never have to deal with #$%&*( wraps again?

Comments on wank #2: That's why I've ended up giving up on every "resistance free" method of training. If my horse was not resisting me in the first place, I wouldn't need this damn book. Then again, I had a particularly stubborn bitch of a mare.

I don't understand how people can realistically think there is one way to train all horses, especially people who say they have worked with horses. They are either lying about their experience, or have only worked with one or two very well behaived animals. It's really rare for the same exact method of training to work on more than a few horses (wether it be a few almost unnoticable changes or drastically different practices).

I always thought it was a mixture of know-it-all and hell, in my case some classism. Of course poor old me could never afford [and my parents would never support my habit] the high-end stuff others had. So of course I kept all my riding to myself. No WAY I'd talk horses to anyone after hearing that the ONLY way to get XYZ to work was to spend ridiculous amounts of money on that toy that they just were bragging about.

I lived in my own little vacuum. I had many adventures.

Wow, horse wank in two communities I didn't read (or get involved in...heh)...and yet it ultimately boils down to the same thing.

I AM ALWAYS RIGHT. YOU ARE ALWAYS WRONG. YOU THINK THAT BECAUSE YOU ARE IGNORANT!

My horse wank originated from someone seeing a photo and saying "Wow, your friend rides...differently." And someone jumping in with "That's European, it's totally different from American but just as valid! Just because you're ignorant doesn't mean I'm wrong!" to which I pointed out "Um, heels up and in the horse's sides is not a feature of European riding, or any riding, and thanks, but you are wrong and that's poor form."

Ah, Equiwank. Long have I longed to make an [info]otf_wank post based on something (anything!) from that juggernaut of wank that is the Chronicle of the Horse forums. But alas, the mods are a little too vigilant there and all of the stuff with potential gets nipped in the bud.

SIGH.

I love the anti-gadget people with a fiery burning passion. Their belief that they can get a horse to do anything in the world with a plain snaffle and a whole lotta love just gives me a warm, tingly feeling.

2. Do not use drawreins and other gadgets, idiots.
3. A bigger/sharper/more painful bit will not make your horse better, idiots.

Yes, because a harsher bit used by someone with soft, educated hands is so much worse than a snaffle used by someone with hard, uneducated hands.

I ♥ horse people. They so craaaazy.

I found a "rate my horse" one - I'm really tempted to post one my favorite polo ponies- a ewe-necked, shortlegged, fuzzy mutt from Mexico. and at the same time play with her mouth by 'see sawing' with your reins. I know it sounds stupid and I know people who don't agree but it works wiht many of the horses i ride.

Dear poster of that wisdom,

yes, it almost always works. Yes, it makes it look as though your horse would trust you and put its head down because it wants to. But I have seen one horse too many that bled from its mouth after the trainer did that in order to 'keep it down' to not think you are stupid for suggesting it.

Had to say that, sorry.
