Ugly American in grisly pileup! (just a little Tour de France wank)
A year ago I wouldn't have expected political wanking in a cycling community... hanging out in the wank communities has been quite an education. Bless all of your blackened little hearts.

So this one starts when cyclingfencer is shocked and appalled that the commentators covering the Tour de France (for the Outdoor Life Network, or OLN) refer to all the distances in kilometers. But it's in Europe, you say? Doesn't matter.

Naturally, there's a bit of WTF?!

So cyclingfencer clarifies his position: Why should we conform to the rest of the world, it all sucks outside of the US!

Of course, the French especially suck.

It kinda goes downhill from there, with the others mocking fencerboy for being divorced, and him calling them "smelly hippys" (sic)

But in the last comment, cheshire house wins the stage with, Turn off the audio, scrub all the "mm" markings off your bike components, and go soak your head. (Formidable!)

[info]cyclingfencer is one of those reactionary idiots who make my job about twice as hard as it has to be. One of these days I'm going to move to Europe so I can calculate stress in Pascals.

Chemists have long since converted. I can just see us measuring mass in slugs and volume in fluid ounces -- ummm, no. I feel quite sorry for you -- which backwards field do you work in?

You give one kidney, I'll give another, and then maybe we'll get something changed.

Course cyclingfencer's brain would fetch the highest price of anything, since it's never been used. [/old joke]

Never said the metric system was a just wondering why the good old USA has to conform to the rest of the third world nations.

No words.

Oh, and the Fahrenheit is really close to life. Yeah, just take the freezing point of some alcohol-water mixture and say 'that is 0' and then the body temperature and say 'that is 100'. Great system. Also, I want to see him/her/it telling 33 degrees Fahrenheit and 34 degrees Fahrenheit apart. Not possible. Most people can't even tell 20 and 22 degree Celsius apart.

Especially interesting wank as I just started this thread over in _scientists_ this morning.

One RL friend of mine is constantly saying (apropos of nothing at all) "Dave, you're a scientist..." so I'll go have a look.

Hmm. Maybe there's enough material out there to justify creating a community called metric_wank?

Anyone want to tell this gentleman that nearly every US scientist (at least, all the physicists and chemists I know) uses the metric system because it makes the conversions so much easier? (Well, when we don't make up our own units -- I love nuclear physics, relativity, and astrophysics)

God forbid Americans should use the much simpler metric system, right?

Sincerely,

*sigh* I wish we'd switch. I also wish that my elementary school teachers had tried harder when they "taught" us the metric system.

And, I guess we're the only first-world nation in the world, huh?

Also, at times like this I'm reminded of the bit in Good Omens about how the British resisted the switch to decimalised currency because they thought it was too complicated.

What I mean is the US system of measure relates to human beings much better than the metric system

I take it [info]cyclingfencer has twelve* fingers, then?

* Or however many inches there are in a foot. Factors of ten, people, factors of TEN! *clings to metric system*

WTF???

This guy is ...

I dunno.

Nuts.

I really couldn't care less, who uses what - it makes no difference to me. I was educated using the metric system, but I know both ways ('cause my Mum STILL uses imperial hehe). Out of curiosity though ... I tried to find out who actually still uses the imperial system.

Only the United States, Liberia and Myanmar.

So far as I can tell anyway.

Mind you - from what I gather, he also thinks that the petrol prices rising is a GOOD thing and loves the fact that his SUV (was it that?) uses lots of natural resources.

Oddness.

"As I said, I love the sport, and just love see how stupid the French look on TV."

I wanted to answer something infantile along the lines "That's okay, we love to see how fat and ugly Americans look on TV".

Then I smacked myself and remembered that the US aren't only full of asshats who think insulting us will ever make us like them and want to help them; there are also decent people.
