Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood:energetic

(took down the link 'cause of the TOS violation, etc. You've all seen it by now, surely.)

Yep. It was all a lie. She made the whole thing up, in what has to be the most calculated, complex hoax I've ever seen.

This has the potential to rock LJ to its core. Or maybe not. It's a little early to tell.

Edit: I went back and looked and apparently she's deleted all the journal entries pertaining to this whole stink. Bah.

The cliff's notes:

She posted that she told a close friend that she might be gay. Said friend went and betrayed her, telling everyone she was a "dyke" and threatening her. Many disgusting slurs and attacks were spread, including many anonymous comments in her journal from "Eliana," the former friend. She posted about being harrassed and even pushed down a flight of stairs; in her last entry she talked about her principal expelling Eliana. Hundreds of people from EVERYWHERE came to her journal, leaving dozens of comments supporting and praying for her and lashing out at "Eliana" when she anonymously commented.

All that was a lie.

Wait, who is she? What did she make up? I went back several pages on her journal, but I didn't see anything about an "Eliana". (That, and I'm attempting to study for a marketing quiz at the same time, so I might have missed something.) Fill me in?

Still, though, even not knowing anything about it? I sat there boggling at the screen for quite some time.

I don't have much to say, except to say how nauseated i am that some of the replyers are actually praising her deception as a great work of fiction. Never mind the trauma she caused to some of the people who believed her story. It's sick.

From what I've read about Munchausen syndrome by Internet today, it's a very common reaction to hoaxes like this. I wouldn't blame people for feeling that, although perhaps it might have been better for them to keep quiet about it.

That was my feeling, too--in the rush to forgive has everyone conveniently forgot that she LIED in a very calculated way?

And who's to say that her apology is sincere?

I wonder if she's learned the art of binding, packing and using masculine gesture and movement by now. Massive pictorials in April were a getup that would not have fooled Ray Charles.

Oh. My. God.

I have people on my FL who are friends with her, but I had stayed out of it because of my (shameful, I felt) suspicions that she wasn't telling the truth. The last time she was plagiarized and got her friends to flame the plagiarist, the writing style in the bio was almost the same as her own except for bits of randomly added Netspeak, and the story was only taken down when the comments started saying, "Hmmm... I think she's making this up."

She's had friends on the PPC board supporting her and loving her all through this.

I would not be surprised if she lost a few of them.

*sigh* Drama, drama, drama. While I have little sympathy for people who do this, I does hope she gets professional help.

I think I remember her freaking out on the Mary Sues community and posting her own story (I hate to say I remember it because it had the girl-falling-into-ME having to deal with menstruation, which was an unusual detail)...anyway.

She's a minor according to an up-thread post. All I can say is, I'm glad I didn't have the internet at that age.

This is a great wank but as it stands it violates our rule against linking to the personal journals of minors. The rule was set by our JF hosts since linking encourages the minors to come here and defend themselves, and JF is an 18+ site.

Maybe someone could post this at LJ and just link to it from here? That way if the minors could have their say too without violating JF TOS.

OMFG. You know, when I first saw those entries/comments, I thought, "this seems a little, er, extreme. But why would anybody make someting like this up?" I actually thought I was being naive by thinking that homophobia to that extreme didn't happen in real life. Turns out I was naive, but for a different reason entirely.

Ugh. You know, I had this heartsinking moment of almost-belief, and then I had another moment of 'wait a minute...'

Y'see, MOST of those things happened to me during high school as well. The nasty names, the threatening phonecalls (with messages left on answering machines), the pushing. Had fake vomit dumped in my locker, and so on. Hell, even when I got in touch with the police, with the still recorded threatening phonecalls, they wouldn't do anything about it because it would be a 'violation of privacy' to trace the number. >_> Nobody pushed my down stairs, thank God.

But what gave me a moment of pause wasn't that things like this 'couldn't happen' (Because they could!) but because she transcribed her threatening calls. That would involve listening to them slowly and carefully enough to type them out word by word. And - I just can't see somebody who's honestly hurt and scared doing that.

On the one hand, it's sort of satisfying to be RIGHT, but on the other hand, what a sick girl.
