In the interests of something other than He Who Must Not Be Named, I present to you, this minor Asatru-wank (For those not up on your Pagan denominations, Asatru is a subset of Paganism of the Recon variety, devoted to the Norse/Anglo-Saxon Gods. Also known as Heathenry)

In which [info]ranger_rick has recently discovered that some Texan Asatru call themselves Texatru, leading to this post on [info]asatruar.

I just heard that Asartuar in Texas call themselves Texatru?!!

That is totally gay, tell me it's not so.

Strangely enough, the comm doesn't react well.

To be honest, I'm not entirely certain whether or not he's a troll. Your average post on [info]asatruar gets maybe ten comments, while this post is up to 76 and counting, and [info]ranger_rick's cheerfully oblivious chatter is really rather raising the hackles of the group.

Texatru. It's like Texaco meets Atreyu. A band that plays songs using oil drums?

*wittles wank down to its basest components* What I really want to know is if these people get all huffy when someone calls something "retarded".

"Texatru" sounds like a petrol station in 1984.

The fact that they call themselves Texatru makes me giggle. It's just so very...Texan.

Also, I adore the icon. Princess Bride + Norse Mythology = Squee!

Believe it or not I actually KNEW a Rednecked Wiccan. When he finally told me I was like WHOA because the image of him and Wicca in the same sentance nearly blew my mind. Strange, but true.

I, for one, am now incredibly tempted to paint a Texan version of Thor- with the longhorns on his ten-gallon helmet.

What the hell is it about Texas? It's way down south, it's fairly conservative, and yet it seems to have the highest concentration of furries, therians, otherkin, pagans of all types, New Agers, psychological-theistic types and generic bizarre folk of anyplace I've ever seen, surpassing even Ontario.

Seriously, what? Is it the heat? Is it all the large cities? Is there some kind of huge ley line center in the form of an anthropomorphic fox I don't know about?

Huge population. Even if the concentration of fringe-types is no higher than anywhere else, you'll still end up with more of them because there are just more people.

I've come across various studies and documents over the years that lend greatly to the notion that the right/"moral majority" harbours and spawns alot of oddities and sexual deviants.

I hadn't gotten the impression that there were a lot of them, but I can believe that the ones there are are exceptionally loud. I'm used to Boston fandom, so when I went to a small college con in Texas, a lot of the behavior struck me as childish--relentless innuendo, a general insistence that anything involving a woman had to be somehow sexual, etc. A fellow outsider who'd lived in the area for a while said that it was because of the repression: People were so constrained in their daily lives that they exploded when they got a chance to let off a little steam. (And weren't very good at it, either, through lack of practice.) That may be the sort of thing you're seeing online with Texas fannish types.

I also agree that huge population means there are going to be a lot of fannish Texans in absolute numbers, even if the percentages are going to be small. They're also more likely to be active online because they're less likely to have like-minded people around.

Eh, it's not even the loudness, either. I just keep randomly running across that sort of people who- surprise!- are from Texas.

*shrugs* Life's just weird, maybe.
