Smallish telemarketer wank
Ah, customers_suck. The spooge flows from thee like a veritable fountain.

The thread starts as a tale of minor woe by [info]dimethirwen about some strange and angry responses from people she's made telemarketing calls to. There's a lot of friendly commiseration, and aside from one bitter and vindictive ex-telemarketer things are fine.

Then we get this rant by a guy called [info]markfinn. He tells the telemarketer what a horrible person she is, blasts her for daring to post in the comm, and winds up with: Get a real job, get some actual customers, and then you will have reason to whinge here. Telemarketting sucks ass, and anyone foul enough to do it for a living needs to seriously reconsider their life choices. [info]houstondragon feels this is kind of overkill.

Markfinn busts out with a precise mathematical formula for why telemarketers are scum. We also have a bit of a discussion about people being stupid about the Do Not Call registry. The OP defends herself by pointing out that actually the people she calls ARE her customers, and Markfinn blows her off. Dbaxdevlisfan and yukies1013 try to gently point out why telemarketers might not necessarily be the minions of Satan per se, and [info]nameistoad offers his brilliant solution to the telemarketing scourge.

Smallish, but with a satisfying amount of self-righteousness and the potential to grow.

whenever I tell anyone about my job they automatically think I'm a telemarketer, so I may be a bit defensive, but: wow. someone's underwear is entirely too tight.

Oh, god, this brought back some horrible memories of the two weeks I did telemarketing from my home phone. I was probably teh worsest evah! telemarketer and didn't make any sales at all, but a lot of people told me "you don't sound like a telemarketer".

But, as a couple people pointed out -- there were no other jobs available! And I didn't post this in the original thread because I really don't feel like being told what an asshole I was/am and threatened with death, kthxbai.

That was really my feeling. I needed a summer job and no one else would hire me because i could only work halfway into August. And the next summer? It happened again. It was like being in hell.

There are a lot of very nice telemarketers up there. I get my anger out at the assholes by hanging up on them. Maybe spoogomatic should try that.

I feel all neglected now.

I am not on the DNC list, yet I only get like maybe 1-2 month.

And yes, some telemarketers are nasty and pushy, but most of the ones I've run into I've simply said "I'm sorry. I'm not interested right now." And they've responded with "Thank you for your time, sir. Have a good evening." My one bitch is that they always think I'm a 'sir' rather than a ma'am. I'm female dammit!

Lucky. I once had over thirty new calls on my caller ID when I came back from a weekend away, all of which were telemarketers. I hate them with the intensity of a thousand burning telephones.

How much do you want to bet that he also yells at the unemployed for not having a job?

Telemarketing is annoying and invasive, and a lot of telemarketers are dishonest and waste my time trying to get past me to my stepdad (who runs a business using our home number). We probably get five telemarketing calls a day, which really sucks.

And yet some people do it because they have to EAT and the job market here SUCKS ASS. At least three of my friends have done it because they couldn't find anyone else that would hire them and they were HUNGRY.

My second absolute most favorite type of telemarketors are the ones who call a GREAT BIG STORE run by a GIANT CORPERATION advertizing floor cleaning or accounting or somesuch. Generally said giant store will find whomever they need to clean floors, rather then the other way around.

My first most favorite type of telemarketor is the similar, only with the added bonus of being a computer rather then a human being. As far as I am conserned, any business using a fucking machine to do the calling and talking deserves to DIE kthnxbi

My favorite type is the one that has the computer call you, and when you pick up the phone, it says, "Please hold for an important message."

What boggles me is that these strategies appear to be successful enough that they keep doing it.

Oh yes, it must be the telephonic equivalent of spam.

The phone calls I get usually ask me to call back for an important business opportunity. Probably to charge us $90 a minute.

It probably works just often enough to make oodles of money for the bastards.

It's like soap operas and soft-core porn. Noone ever admits to watching them and yet they're still some of the most successful stuff on TV. They keep spamming and calling and showing so SOMEONE must watch it/buy through them.

Yes. Those six months I spent selling credit cards because I had to eat was definitely a job I really wanted to have.

I did it because I liked getting screamed at and having to be insanely polite to the people doing the screaming.

Uh-huh. Sure.

Jesus, the market is so bad around here that that's one of the only jobs to have. I lasted three months before I gave up and quit. The job sucks ass, but all it taught me is that some people aren't smart enough to just say "Not interested" and hang up. Yet I'm the one that's the bad guy.

Heh. If that's bad, then I don't want to be good. Heck, I even thought the the guy who jerked off while she was trying to sell him windows was pretty funny. I wonder if he always had a telemarketer fetish, or if he just got so many calls that he decided to develop one?

I swear I've met this [info]markfinn character before, or someone like him, when I was working the concession stand at a major chain movie theater between my freshman and sophomore years of college. These guys thought they'd Uncovered Some Great Scheme by noticing that I tried to sell them the large for a quarter more just like I did for the person ahead of them in line. Rather than inferring from this that I was forced to ask customers this in return for my pitiful wage and slave labor hours, they inferred that I was obviously a criminal mastermind who was trying to fleece them of their hard-earned money because I was out to get them for personal reasons. Well, sir, I didn't have anything against you as a person before, but you can bet I do now. Congratulations, "Sir," you just bitched out an 18-year-old working for minimum wage at the only place that would hire her just for the summer. I hope you feel like a real man now.

I think all people who think they're doing the world a public service by bitching out underpaid minions should be forced to work on the other side of the counter/phone/tax bracket, and see how they like it.

Well, some people work out their feelings of inadequacy by going to therapy. Others do it by acting like assholes to people who are misfortunate enough to have a job like that.

I hate telemarketers, but I usually just hang up on them. Still rude, but not as bad as berating them for having the shit job they have.

"I'm not interested" works better, even if it's not viscerally as satisfying. If you just hang up, they're still allowed (and depending on where they're telemarketing from and why, sometimes obligated) to continue calling you, but those three words will get you permanently off the calling list every time, whether you're in the national DNC registry or not. And if they keep calling after that, you're allowed to threaten them with lawsuits.

My most favorite memory of working at the Big Fast Food Corp Resteraunt (well, aside from my final check bouncing. NICE WAY TO TREAT YOUR EMPLOYEES, GUYS!) was some asshole in a suit throwing a cheeseburger at me. Because, of course, me and the cooks were TOTALLY out to get him.

And it was always the guys or gals in suits that you had to watch out for. Apparently we fast-food workers are the lowest of the low, and therefore don't deserve basic human kindness.

My friend took on a telemarketing job for a few months. In true John style, he at one point managed to ring an elevator emergency phone. We're still not sure how.

John: Hello, is this ?
Guy on other end, sounding rather echoey: Mate, this is the elevator.
John: ... ah. Well, could I interest you in buying cable internet?

I love how this Markfinn guy acts all high and mighty and like he's never had a horrible job before. Pfft.

I worked at a large department store last Christmas in the gift wrap department and I and my coworkers would get yelled at often for things that were (usually) beyond our control. My personal favorite was the woman who yelled at me because I couldn't wrap her gifts FIRST, as we had about 80 packages to wrap within forty minutes. Ugh. Okay, that was a tangent, but markfinn's idiocy makes me laugh.
