More non-HP wank from the wank_report
After weeks and weeks of LJers bitching in locked posts about the sudden splooge of large graphics attached to fics cluttering up their friends list and making their lives difficult (especially since half these graphics are not work safe), someone finally takes the plunge and brings it out in the open.

It all starts with this:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/_sharvie_/34016.html

Sharvie, you see, believes that because she likes seeing graphics, everyone should like it too. To be fair, she does put her large graphics under an ljcut, but she resents being told that when posting to a community, some people would rather not see her graphics, no matter what size what size they are.

The gem in this post isn't that (all people are allowed to disagree). It's that everyone should be on DSL and if they're not, they should STFU.

It starts off with a lot of WORD!

Things get nasty when a bunch of people ride in and take issue with people not putting graphics under an ljcut.

First, the OMG You're So Meeeen! Exchange: http://www.livejournal.com/users/_sharvie_/34016.html?thread=256224#t256224

But the real wank comes in when a bunch of people take real issue with her DSL or Death! stance:

Here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/_sharvie_/34016.html?thread=259808#t259808

Here:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/_sharvie_/34016.html?thread=261344#t261344

Name calling! Baby talk! It could get better, but maybe it'll die out.

And of course, the usual "Its my LJ, I'll do whatever I want!!111" post:

Now then, the dial-up. As much as I feel bad that it takes a day and a half to download anything, technology isn't going to wait for you.

Wow. I think I'm going to sploog a bit. First of all, not all of us can physically get DSL. Believe it or not DSL is not availible in all areas of the US. I live in a fairly populated area, just a few miles outside of Portland Oregon, in fact, and DSL is not availible to me. It has something to do with the quality of the phone lines or something. *has no idea how DSL really works, but knows it isn't availible here no matter what*

And believe it or not, not everyone has cable, wants cable, or can afford cable. So Bitch Please.

Ditto. We just got DSL last year, but there's only one provider for the area, so their service is crap, because they know we can't leave for a competitor.

Word. I live in Chicagoland in a very densely populated area, and up until a year and a half ago our only high-speed option was ridiculously expensive satellite that we just could not afford. DSL was available in neighbourhoods less than half a mile from my house, but not ours. It simply wasn't an option.

As a matter of fact, my uncle the computer hacker didn't believe us that we couldn't get high-speed until he personally checked all of the companies for himself. Even he had to admit defeat.

Obviously you should move to somewhere that does have DSL so that you can spare Little Miss Entitlement over there from wearing her delicate fingers to the bone typing in an LJ-cut.

I don't understand what the problem is. I mean, what's the big deal about putting in an LJ-cut? What's the argument against them, that they take valuable seconds of your time to type in? Puh-lease.

Ugh, i can't stand when people get the 'get high speed internet and shut up' mentality. It's not available where i live. Hell, i can't even connect at 56k. It's 26k max. Only high speed available is satellite and it's $600 to set up. Sorry, don't have that kind of dough.

Just because i have dialup doesn't mean i don't deserve to enjoy the internet like everyone else.

I feel a small amount of your pain, as bad weather screwing up the phone lines has restricted me to absurdly slow dialup speeds for substantial amounts of time in the past. Ugh.

I say anyone who's too stupid to be able to get an ordinary picture to a size that's not a problem to load on dialup* is too stupid to deserve a high-speed connection.

Sadly, I do not have Magical Internet God Powers.

*Not having any decent image-editing software is only an excuse in extreme circumstances. EXTREME.

And not even then. Even Picasa helps you shrink picture size, and that's free.

I should not go there, and tell Ms. "Dial-up is for losers" that I used a 28K modem and a text-only browser back when I started college, and seeing big-ass graphics make me wish I had that browser.

/me sighs in memory of Lynx.

Ugh, hope she'll realise that some of us can't get DSL/broadband/whatev even if we want to, simply because it's not in our area. Some of us live out in rural areas (I live in the middle of nowhere in Ireland) that have no hope of ever getting it.

Be glad you have what you have, beeyatch.
