Slightly old Punk!wank
[info]fanficrants amuses in a spare moment with a small elitism musical wank.

[info]emogyrlskyttlez posts a rant about those ubiquitous "emo kids" and their worrying habit of hanging around Hot Topic and listening to Green Day (but not the real, proper Green Day, you understand, the new kind where they dance like Britney Spears on Kool-Aid. Or something. Damn those Young People with their New-Fangled Music *shakes stick*)

[info]lilykane objects that, unless you are Sid Vicious (in which case the Fortean Times would like to have a word with you) you, too, were a rubbish teenager at one stage.

[info]redninjawinz and the OP have a long argument about whether punk is or is not, in fact, dead (sadly, neither of them tries to dispute the deceased status of Sid Vicious). Both of them use the word "pose(u)r" a great deal, and seem to be unaware of the irony therein.

[info]ami_87 makes a contribution to the argument, although to be honest I have no idea what she actually said. She does, however, seem to disapprove of "white-blond" " punk-wanna be emo-slavered bitches ignorant assholes", but luckily seh's a "true buddist", and has therefore not seen ´fit to slaughter any of them. Yet.

And the whole time I wonder what this has to do with fanfic...

The general use of the label "punk" in a fanfiction (and real life) makes my inner-emo curl up and weep. Oh, and my inner-punk wishes to kill you.

Ch. If her inner-punk was REALLY punk, it would have curb stomped that annoying inner-emo a long time ago.

Word. Having an "inner-emo" is so not punk.

I'd go so far as to say it's anti-punk. Of course, we're talking about [info]emogyrlskyttlez here, who also claims to be an existentialist. I think she ranted at some point about "OMG existentialist POSEURS!!!" too.

Okay, so, in French class, we had an assignment where we were talking about professions...doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc., and one girl had an older brother who worked summers laying carpet. In French, that's "poseur de moquette." So now the word "poseur" is inextricably linked to interior decorating in my head.

*tries to picture existentialist interior decorating* I'm seeing...bookshelves made from 2x4s stacked on cinder blocks, acrylic-on-paper self-portraits covering the walls, and a filthy couch picked up off a curbside.

Dunno. That sounds a lot like Lori's style, too.

Yes. She obviously knows punk.

And the whole time I wonder what this has to do with fanfic...

I daresay it has some connection to that HP badfic convention in which Harry or someone else (Draco and Ginny are popular choices) decide that they've had it with dressing "prep" and go to some goth'n'punk'n'surf tat shop to stock up on black outfits and leather wristbands with studs on. Generally assumed to be written by individuals who have more interest in the hairstyles than any social or artistic aspects of the scene, although since the closest I've come to that scene myself is reading some dumbfuck argument about antidepressants in the sXe community on livejournal, I'm not in any way passing judgement.

haha, I was wondering if this would end up here. My favorite part was the passive-aggressive attempts by certain posters to try to "one-up" each other's authentic "punkitude" by name dropping bands and whether or not they had any vinyl in their record collection >.<

Kids, you're trying to hard.

That was going to be a Sex Pistols album. Never Mind The Huggles. Then Malcolm McLaren stepped in and told them that was too emo.

It always cracks me up when people wave their "punk" status around like an internet dick. Who the fuck cares? A lot of the originators of punk didn't. They'd be laughing at them for taking it so goddamned seriously.

Personally, I'd like to see this attitude branch out to other things on the internet. Like food -- "I liked chipolte before it was cool" -- or lawn care -- "Weed eaters are for pussies! I get on my hands and knees and use scissors, bitches! Hardcore!" -- or draperies -- "Sheer.Is.DEAD!!!! This is not an opinion. This is a fact."

...then again, it's probably out there somewhere, and I just haven't seen it yet.

SCRAPBOOKING.IS.DEAD!!!!

As soon as everyone start realizing this then we can all have a nice day. It died in the late 80's early 90's. All the housewives now adays who claim to be scrapbookers, are not. They are a new form of crafter but not scrapbookers.

And also I need to point out, many people who make there photo albums to look like scrapbookers are silly. All they do is make themselves look desperate for attention and meaning in their shallow lives.

I was never a scrapbooker my mom's generations might have had scrapbookers but unless people are 30 and over they were never scrapbookers. They were just imitating a sence that had died long long ago.

I had to use poseur attitude to justify my love of Chipotle recently. Someone sniffed that they don't go to Chipotle because McDonald's owns it. However, I've been eating at Chipotle since it was just the one store with the exposed pipe run by a guy who just wanted to make burritos, a good place for us college types to get a lot of good, cheap food down the street. I can tell you that not much has changed since it started - except now they use more free-range meats and organic ingredients, so I don't think the McDonald's hate should apply here.

Not that I think any less of people who recently started eating Chipotle. I'm always thrilled to introduce new people. But being recognized by name at store #1 gives me cred among the fanatics for some reason. (And yes, there are people who have t-shirts drawn up touting that they've traveled here to eat at #1. I don't get it either. It's the same in every single Chipotle.)

OP said she was born 'when grunge was just hitting the mainstream', which would make her about 14-15.

The funniest bit about the wank to me is that over half of the bands people are dropping to out hardcore each other I've seen on (German) MTV over the years. Now that's punk rock.

Not that that means she's not qualified to like punk. However, she isn't qualified to act like an elitist ass about it, either.

The only people who can really lay claim to that ability, IMHO, are the ones who Were Really There in the seventies. And they're a dying breed; when the eighties hit, quite a few of them went respectable.

And also that, according to legend, the Ramones began writing their own stuff when they realized they were so crappy at playing guitar that they couldn't do covers of Banana Splits songs?

Of course, most fourteen and fifteen year olds don't have any idea who the Banana Splits are, so I suppose that would mean nothing to them.
