A life-long commitment to wank.
The sXe community is a little wank-mine sometimes. Today, user 0n posts enquiring about non-alcoholic beer. I learn through reading the thread that "non-alcoholic" beer has a small amount of alcohol in, and 0n learns a few harsh lessons about how to be straight-edge. Look out for unpleasant language, accusations of giving the community a bad name and very small typeface.

*scratches head* Since when does non-alcoholic beer has alcohol in it? I mean, wouldn't it be called low-alcoholic beer in that case? I'm pretty sure non-alcoholic beer over here does in fact not have any alcohol in it. And to think that some people might actually enjoy the taste of alcohol.. and not see the drink as a pathway to being drunk..

And wow, edge is rough. You make a mistake, and you're out forever?
Really? I'm not knocking the lifestyle (all for it, but not for me), but that seems a bit harsh to me.

Non-alcoholic beer really isn't. Technically it IS called low-alcohol beer. Ugh ugh ugh. It's nasty.

Yeah. They're typically around 1 proof, or 0.5% alcohol. A 12-ounce bottle has about 1.7g of alcohol. Compare a dose of NyQuil (3g) or a normal beer (14g).

Wait... does that mean if you take NyQuil, they'll kick you out of their little club?

I have heard of some straight-edgers that wouldn't even use prescribed or medicinal drugs unless it was an absolute emergency. Swearing off even things like asprin. As a matter of fact, that same community has a rather wanky discussion on antidepressants in the archives (maybe I should go and dig it out) in which I learnt that taking such medication is indicative of a "weakness" and that any emotional problem is easily overcome by, oh, probably the macho mosh-power of EDGE, in allcaps. Mind you, some people disagreed, and there was arguing. There seems to be a lot of that kind of thing round there.

Here. From May, and CeruleanSwirl seems to be causing all the wangst there. Maybe not so wanky as I remember, but nevertheless...

I'm confused. The FAQ says if you slip up, just get back on the edge, but the posters are all saying if you slip up you can never be edge again. That would mean that you might already be ineligible before you ever hear of the possibility...?

But I get what you're saying. From the looks of things there's little difference between being Straight Edge and being a Christian Scientist. And who appointed these guys "Straight Edge In Group Deciding Dictators"? Why do they get to say who's in and out? Aren't you part of something if you practice it? Most religeons aren't even that strict.

It's shit like this that makes me not feel bad for being such a jackass to these kids in highschool. (Is there a rule against these sort of comments? Oh well.)

Also, most modern dictionaries list existentialist as both adjective and noun, while transcendentalist is really a noun. Fuckwits.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who wanted to smack that person for the adjective-not-noun argument.

Besides, it was a really stupid comeback along the lines of grammar-picking. Geez.

Oh my god, these people are fucking stupid.

I don't really care. If you're in AP, you would know that existentialist is an adjective.

Is that what they're teaching in AP English nowadays? Mostly we just read books and analyzed the shit out of 'em.

The best part is that someone actually thought that was a snappy comeback. Hee.

Yeah, considering how hard it was for people at my school to get into AP...

...the torturous seconds of having to FILL IN A CIRCLE WITH A PENCIL!

...the arduous task of having to HAVE MY MOTHER SIGN OFF ON MY CLASS SCHEDULE!

...the pain I felt when I HANDED SAID PAPER IN TO MY GUIDANCE COUNCILOR'S SECRETARY!

*clutches her heart in rememberance*

I just feel bad for those that didn't make it. Poor, poor souls.

It means you don't do drugs, drink or have sex (permiscuous sex, technically, but I've seen people told they weren't sxe for having sex with a significant other of almost a year...) it's basically "we don't do things to harm our bodies (except mosh)"

I was straight edge once... then I turned 16. No... really... I was also a vegetarian, but then I realized meat was tasty.

2 comments in and they already throw around the word 'Fascist'. This is so hardcore stupid.

In another post, someone asks what a SXE person should do to celebrate being 21 and someone replies with 'go to a show'. Have you EVER been a concert that wasn't full of potsmoke and beer?! I've been to see bands that are SXE and there's pot and beer and girls taking off their tops (granted I'm sometimes one of them...). Then they start fighting over whethor or not it's OK to have friends who drink and someone points out that SXE is turning into a cult. haha...

The straightedgers around here - which, sadly, have caused enough trouble and pissed off enough people to have their own police classification as a gang - have this idea that once you've been a straightedger for so many years, you can drink, do drugs, ect. This mentality was so that if you "joined" when you were a freshman or sophmore in highschool, by the time you graduated you'd be able to be drunk for your party, or something.

Also, it was tradition for them to beat their girlfriends.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Wow... that's not really what SXE is supposed to be... that's why i stopped labeling myself at such all those years ago... people like that... I really don't do a lot of non straight edge things, but i don't want to be associated with a bunch of thugs.

Ha ha! I was a big dork in highschool- just kept my head down, did my homework, didn't go to parties.

It was one hell of a shock when a punk girl I was friendly with confessed that she looked up to me because I was so "'edge". Apparently not getting into trouble or getting multiple piercings or tatoos has become rare enough that now it's seen as a statement. Or something.

...and that's my experience with straight edgers, and I wanted to share with Group.
