Microscopic wank on metaquotes.
Do I think angry music and games like Grand Theft Auto contribute to the downfall of society? You bet I do.

Mm, I love it when people who don't even have kids try to tell other people how to raise theirs.

If, that is, "love" means "loathe with a fiery passion." I don't even like it when other parents try to do it. Every kid is different, as is every household. Yeah, there are a few things that are absolutes (feed it, wash it, love it, teach it, don't hurt it) but other than that, get out my face, yo.

And if I ever had children, they would not play those video games, and they could listen to that music all I wanted so long as I never, ever saw or heard it.

Ah, even without the "if I ever had children," it would be blindingly obvious that she doesn't. My oldest isn't even four years old, and I already know better than to say things like "they would not play those video games."

And on another note, making sure you don't hear what music your kids are listening to is a SPLENDID idea.

What I love is that these violent video games do have age ratings, yet parents buy them for their kids anyway.

Sorry, I was going to write more but Starbuck is so very, very hot. Omg boobies. O.O

Yeah, I know. It's not like a 6-year-old is going into the store with $50 and buying Grand Theft Auto when their parents aren't looking. And if they are, then there are other parental issues that may need more attention than buying innapropriate things for your children...

Our kid plays GTA. So far the only problem we've had with him has been video games in general, as in, he'd rather play games than do his homework, which is normal. He's a kind and thoughtful kid. It depends on the kid, really. If there was a problem with GTA making him violent or aggressive, however, he wouldn't be allowed to play it.

And that, my friend, is called Good Parenting.

The kids I worry about (which I will now extrapolate upon now that Starbuck's boobies are outta the picture) are the ones whose parents "just want to be their friiiiiends," who are too lazy to parent and would rather blame their kids' faults on "society" - aka those who would are just wishing they'd never bred at all.

>>>he'd rather play games than do his homework<<<

Ha ha! Mine too! A promise of no games or tv or friends over for a week and he's off to do his homework like a good boy though.

I let him play stuff like Resident Evil, GTA, etc. He's not aggressive or violent. At his worst, he's chronically forgetful...which he gets from his father... ;p

Besides, he knows games are just make-believe, since I actually took the time to teach him.

I don't think video games affect children as much as some think. If they did, Pac-Man would have us running around a dimly lit room, listening to repetitive electronic music and popping pills... crap, I forgot about the ravers. Okay, bad example.

Seriously, though, I grew up playing my fair share of violent video games, both of the cartoonish and "realistic" (as "realistic" as one could consider Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto anyway) varieties. I still play Perfect Dark and GTA2 with some regularity, in fact. And you know something? I deplore the thought of violence in the real world.

...hm, come to think of it, maybe all the overblown violence I saw in games actually turned me off to real violence somehow? Heh.

Hah, and I am kind of the opposite to you (aka. has seen lots of violence and is hence turned off it). I'm an old-school anime fan, and when they brought my favorite series over here, they slaughtered it, removing all the violence. Now, before that happened I was quite blase about violence -- liked a well-choreographed fight scene, but I wouldn't go out of my way looking for it so much. These days I just about ricochet out of my chair when something cool and violent happens, and I blame it entirely on the censorship, because I got obsessed with, well, basically violence being where it should be in a story.

(I still don't like excessive violence, but that's a whole 'nother issue, I think.)

That person on metaquotes would get along good with the goobernor of my state. In fact, she and her buddies sound like the women who got the sale of water yoyos banned so I have to smuggle them over the border. With the bill he signed making selling violent video games to kids punishable by fine or someshit and going on about what misinfo he had about GTA wtf, I wonder what's next.

(can I take my vote back?)

how come those damn kids can find a working copy of GTA and all the ones I find are duds?

Wait, I thought the recipe for the downfall of society was angry music and violent videogames, 'cause I was listening to Scandinavian death metal while playing Solitaire, and civilisation only wobbled a bit.

as a side note, I didn't play videogames until I wast 14, and didn't own a console or computer for gaming until I was 17 going on 18.

I was born with a hearty violent streak, but you know what, my parents actually raised me rather than just have me as a fashion accesory. Consequently, I rarely initiated any fights, and never shot up or bombed a school despite how much it deserved to be turned into a smuldering hole in the ground.

The moral, parent's need to get back into the habbit of teaching responcibility, and self control.
