jaysus.

yeah, okay, LJ has problems - but they're doing damn well for a service that they've had to build up as demand grows. that's part of what I like about LJ.

I have a paid LJ account. I very rarely have problems. and a little patience works wonders.

incidentally, how ashamed should I feel that I know one of the wankers? I'm not entirely sure here.

On the other hand, before my paid account expired last month, I was able to get to my LJ somewhere between 30-50% of the times I tried. If I was getting DSL 30-50% of the times I attepted to connected, I'd so be shopping for a new provider.

Oddly enough, I've actually noticed an improvement in service since I stopped trying to hit the so-called "fast servers."

Weird. Since I paid in July, I've barely had a problem at all.

On 56k or Ethernet.

Just wondering, is there a joke behind that icon? It's...interesting.

Semi-nonsensical running joke from last MediaWest, from attempts to describe Dragnet stills. Something along the lines of, "Which picture? The What the Shit is This picture?" "No, the The Mustard is Over There picture."

It's good, except I hate ads. And honestly, if it gets popular, I don't see how ads alone can keep it up and running.

I RP there, though.

Although unless I'm missing something with DJ, they use banners and pop-ups.

GJ uses the non-graphics, non-blinking, plain text block ads, and even before GJ, I was opting in to use them over on EZBoard because of some program they're running -- you still keep your supporter account status after it expires if you switch to the plain block ads. No banners, no popups (and the popups are the reason I switched to supporter status in the first place)

Overall, I've come to find them far less intrusive and far less annoying than popups and flashing banners. I've also wound up clicking on these text ads more than I've ever clicked on any banner or popup. They usually end up getting tailored to your interests and searches (on GJ anyway; you can select your targeted areas over on EZBoard) and I've seen things that were actually interesting. I've found sites with dragon merchandise I didn't know were out there, I've found some things that amused the heck out of me, so on and so forth.

I'd rather not have ads. But I've seen a lot of attempts to make money off ads, and overall, I find the text blocks less intrusive than the banners or popups ever were.

Yea, from what I've seen, DJ does use flashing banners and pop-ups. I'm an early adopter there, so I don't notice when I'm logged in.

Maybe I should try out GJ. I mean 1,000 pics!??!?!?! WHEEEEE!!! :D But, for what though? heh

GJ's original purpose used to be for RPGs. (in fact, the URL used to be "www.unlimitedrpg.com" - I'm not sure what happened, they're not talking, but there was legal problems surrounding that.)

But that's what I use it for. I have anywhere from 1-20 icons per character, depending on how many pics I can get of the character, what pics inspire iconage, etc. Then of course, there's the numerous 'shippy icons for the couples. ^_^ (and I'm nowhere close to the 1,000 limit either.)

Most of the RP currently doesn't take place there. But it's useful for out-of-character analyzation (in the OOC community) and for writing up and posting dialogue and exchanges between two or more characters that only one person plays (i.e., I had a scene I need to RP out between two characters I play, and it was just easier to write it up like a minific than just RP it in the chatroom) or if just one character needs to do something that's plot-critical by his or herself. It's also a good fallback zone in case scheduling conflicts really gummy up the RPG works and the players can't really put in any time for chat-based RP for a while.

Hmmm...I see. It's something to consider. I've got quite a few RP logs that I've been just TOO LAZY to code and post on my site. So, I can use a GJ account for that purpose. Heh...

Can't hurt.

That's odd. I've not encountered that problem.

Sure, they show up when I'm logged out of the system, and I go to someone's userinfo, yeah they're there.

But once I log back in again, my prefs are as I like them. My GJ colors of choice, my ad setting preferences, so on and so forth.

But yeah, they're not going to stay gone once you log out and the system can't tell you from Adam.

Wow. That fellow julianbashir certainly is a twat, isn't he?

"Whine, whine, whine. I SPEAK FOR THE LITTLE PEOPLE!"

And dude, any time someone trots out that old "I can't afford to pay for LJ, I have to feed my family" chestnut, there's a pretty simple answer: Don't pay for LJ then. Take your three icons and like them, you ungrateful snot.

What the hell is wrong with people and their fucking sense of entitlement nowadays?

That fellow julianbashir certainly is a twat, isn't he?

He's there?! ::runs to see!:: That fellow must have forearms like Popeye now. He's been wanking and wanking and wanking for as long as I've been on LJ, pretty much. Every damn time I see him somewhere -- he's wanking.

And yes, he really IS a twat. I love how he thinks everything must constantly, always be 100% top form and functional, no matter what. Act of God? Act of Terrorism? Blackouts? Who cares - downtime in any way, shape, or form is clearly unacceptable in "Julian's" little, seriously undermedicated world, apparently.

I really, honestly do want to desperately believe that was done in jest.

My experience witnessing the various neverending depths of stupidity which mankind can claim is telling me otherwise.

Fortunately, he's also the only one on LJ who spells it in such an...interesting manner. (Then again, given Alaska's population (in terms of numbers), that might not be saying much...)

There's whining aplenty against LJ, yes, but the LJ loyalists crying "Just you wait, GJ will die its untimely death, and then you'll all be sorry!!!!" strike me as equally assholish.

Because, you know, how dare another service that might even be better in some ways exist? They're just not taking the load we are! Yes, that's why they don't get 404 messages 25% of the time during night browsing! They just have it EASY, whereas LJ LOVES us, and has MORALS, and...and...::SOB::

*snickering at it all*
