Big Gay Rap Wank
Props to the mousie who reported this one.

Over on [info]ohnotheydidnt there is wank over Kanye West speaking out about the use of the term "gay" in the rap industry.

First of all, we have the don't say you love kittens gay people thread. Then there's the predictable rap-bashing, gay people/racism wank, and "freedom of speech" card.

We also have, "Gay" is okay, and my personal favourite, "Don't use gay because it means 'happy' but fag is worse because all it means is 'cigarette' in British slang".

I'd like to slap the fuck out of thebitingfaery right about now. What *does* it think is good music? (BTW, wasn't that person wanked recently? That name is awfully familiar. Aside from being Labyrinth fandom wanker #9,000,344, that is.)

She's involved in 99,99% of all ONTD wanks. Which amounts to 99,99% of everything ever posted in the community.

thebitingfaery doesn't like anything except posing for web cam shots. You'll catch on after a while.

Is it bad I actually agree with thebitingfairy on most points? I just don't think my taste in music needs to be discussed in a LJ community...

And now that I read more, I see I don't actually agree with her. Not only will I not wank about my musical opinions on ONTD, she's batshit insane and I am just sometimes insane.

Yeah, and she has to say it over and over again. I got that she doesn't like rap the first time she said it, I didn't need 9,000 repeats.

Yeah, I was encouraged by her comments at first - I'm one of those music snobs that goes for the four-elements-of-music thing (that's melody, harmony, rhythm and timbre) and therefore doesn't like rap - but I didn't like the way she expressed her opinions. She kept going back and forth between "Rap is an inferior art form" and "It's just my o-peeeeeen-yin! Dun flame me 4 it plz"

Debating taste in music is almost always idiotic. I mean, it's not as if people change their minds about a style just because some dweeb on the internet told them it sucks.

Wasn't there briefly even a "is homophobia even a word?" thread?

**minatory voice** People, don't play historical linguistics at home. You'll hurt yourselves.

These words, they did not evolve the way you think they did.

Word. So annoying when people say the because a word once meant something, it will always and forever remain the same. Do you see me speaking Old English?

Except in the pub after my Beowulf class...

Oh, jeez. >__<

What a bunch of fools.

Speaking of "freedom of speech", all I really think it is is "freedom to make your sorry ass sound like an idiot". Even though I don't like their opinions, I'd support the right of racists, bigots, etc. to say what they want. Because there will be a vigilante mob right afterwards. >D

I refuse to go on a ten page ethnomusical rant over why saying rap music isn't really music is a) Eurocentric and b) just plain wrong.

Instead, I will say that [info]oh_no_nikki needs to lay off the angel dust.

Hmm I hope one day we can look back at how we treated gay people and realise it's the same way we traited African Americans many decades ago.
funny, i don't remember having been put up for auction, being sold to a texan cotton farm, or having sex with thomas jefferson.
i think it would be more like slavery>homophobia>fursecution, but that is just me. what a dumb argument; WORDS CHANGE OH NO!

*scritches head* I don't recall any of that happening mere "decades" ago to African-Americans either. I'm thinking they mean mid-twentieth century; the phrasing's rather dense of them.

I'd also say it's much closer to women's rights myself, what with normally having some rights in most countries for the past few centuries, being mostly ignored as an eccentricity in the upper-class, and so forth, but that's a tangent.

I'm proud of Kanye West, in a couple of ways. I was waiting for someone to speak out about the diamond mines in Africa, especially someone in the hip-hop industry, considering how a lot of them are obsessed with ice and bling and such. And now that he's taken on the issue of homosexuality and homophobia, which is also a big deal in the black community, I might just have to love him. Unfortunately, I don't like his voice, and that's the main thing I'm a music snob about - but I still support him.

That said: almost everyone on ohnotheydidnt are just plain gay, in the negative sense; and I hate it when people say "rap" to describe the entire genre. It's just so...white.

I think that Talib Kweli and ded prez have been referenced the situation in various albums, although I'm unsure about public media-type statements.

Damn, that's "have referenced," not... you know, with the "been."

What I wanted to ask, was this:

So, what does just plain gay, in the negative sense mean?
