Wanking isn't Punk, Man!
In [info]punk_knitters, [info]namesofthedead posts large, artsy, black and white pictures of herself knitting during a 'two point suicide suspension'. I'm not familiar with the term, but this seems to mean 'hanging precariously from metal things protruding from your skin.'

I'm giving the Reader's Digest version, so quotes are not exact in the slightest.

Comments are positive, at first, ranging from a simple "amazing" to "interesting, but I'll stick to my comfy chair" to "punkest knitting evar!" Things seem okay, if slightly disturbing, until [info]rhiannonmars and [info]fiberdiva raise their voices in mild confusion and outright revulsion.

Following that, there are many "judgemental much?" comments, which are responded to with "dude, she posted this on the internet, she should expect people to be grossed out."

Later, [info]theladywyvern feels the need to post a "you have all been so nice in this community except for that time a day ago when you all hated on the meathook girl" post which, of course, starts the wank anew.

ETA, 5 minutes later: Edited to fix retarded html mistake.

Unless the post was edited post-wank, it looks like she did.

*sniffs derisively* It's just garter stitch. If she was REALLY hardcore, she'd be doing a feather-and-fan or some entrelac while suspended. Now THAT would be punk.

I've heard of people who like to be suspended on hooks - back when I used to buy Bizarre, they would mention it every so often - but I've never heard of people knitting at the same time. It's a bit like doing the ironing on a precarious mountain ridge. Or maybe even more like those men who pay dominatrices to let them clean the bathroom while wearing a gimp mask.

Extreme Ironing!

I've always been vastly amused by extreme ironing. It seems so pointless. "Look at me! I'm ironing underwater! Underwater, damnit!"

Punk knitting?

I guess the cognitive dissonance inspired by the name of the community is why I almost snorted my coffee at this comment of apis_mellifera's:

In my opinion, your judgment of this person is not punk rock at all.

The first half of the sentence is so polite, so non-confrontational: it's prim little Granny in cardigan and slacks taking her cousin Betty to task over the latter's accusation of dastardly knitting-pattern theft by best friend Geraldine.

And then, instead of 'not at all becoming' we get 'not punk rock at all'.

I swear that scrambled my brains.

Maybe I'm an anomoly, but my only reaction was: "owie owie owie!"

But also, I guess you can't post things in a public forum and expect that people aren't going to tell you what they think. And it seemed like there were a lot of people offended on meathook-girl's behalf and she wasn't particularly bothered at all.

That was strangely awesome.

I keep wondering when she'll progress to making doilies, or having tea parties with her friends, while they're all suspended around a table.

"More tea?"
"Certainly... Can someone swing me over?"

I think my brain is broken.

Okay I may be in the minority here, I don't know, but I have to agree with the chick that said it was sick. Blech. But hey, I'm not going to begrudge her doing that, it's her body. As long as she doesn't come after me with some meat hooks. *shudders*

Now I wonder what else she does with her knitting needles?

I also wonder who is the designated hanger? amongst her friends. If they all do this at their knitting group, there has to be someone who doesn't so that person can get them all down. Hmm.
