Song as Old as Time
Some very clever person decided to release the results of a study that indicate that men have a higher IQ than women.

Unsurprisingly, this ends up on Slashdot.

This devolves. Quickly.

At just a quick stare-through, I saw that religious fanatasism is the new punk, men are lazy and women are overly emotional, which is why women do better on tests, but can't handle life, the whole study is trollbait, it's not trollbait, cuz that's something else entirely, and that the man who did the study also thinks that blacks are dumber than whites.

All that is in response to the first comment. Which, just to be different, wasn't "first".

Er... I expected Slashdot to be about, erm, slash. Now I'm disappointed it's not.

Also, in a few years there'll be some study saying that women have higher IQs than men and it'll start all over again, bla bla bla.

Oh, sweet merciful YODA, not this shit again. Questions about the usefulness and bias of IQ testing ENTIRELY ASIDE, it's not like this is NEWS; we've known the tails on the men's IQ distribution are longer than those on the women's for DECADES. Incidentally, this ALSO means that there are more men than women running around with both sub-average and extremely LOW IQs, but they don't go around writing inflammatory articles about THAT, now do they?

My question is: So what? Accuracy aside, so the fuck what? How is this study useful in any way? I mean, I'm all about pure academia and research for the sake of curiosity, but like you said, this dead horse has been beaten enough already.'

What I really like about Slashdot is that every other discussion will devolve into a criticism of Poster A's parenting skills. Posters B and C will insist quite vehemently that if/when they have children, said children will SO be allowed to watch porn and grotesque violence! Poster D will applaud Poster A's decisions and insist that Posters B and C are insane and irresponsible, thus prompting B, C, E and F to call him a strict, tight-assed moron.

Mmmm, slashdot.

I love the way some posters assume that if the study said that women were more intelligent than men, no-one would make a fuss. Yeah. That's why as soon as girls outperformed boys at GCSE level in the UK, the government set up a taskforce to figure out why and to help boys regain their rightful place at the top of the pile. OMG men are soooo oppressed.

Ahh, so true. Ditto for my country. Suddenly boys are the greatest victims of the education system, regardless of class, family backgrounds or the fact they overwhelmingly take up more teacher/administration time and energy in schools than girls ever have.
