The mysterious clitoris
There's some controversy over a picture included in the Wikipedia article on the clitoris. Who knew that a plain photograph of a unaroused female genitals could be so ... stimulating? There seem to be four five [edit] camps:

* It's an article about the clitoris, so we should see a clitoris" versus "the picture we have is better than nothing, which is what you've got to offer" versus "I like the picture"

* "Some people may find the image offensive and we should accomodate them" versus "some people may find the image offensive and they can fuck off"

Cue edit war and pages of wank. There are personal attacks, links to porn sites, mocking of girls who aren't born knowing where their clit is (I almost wanked), and out-of-place sexual boasting ("I can find the clitoris ... while bartending ... in the dark"). Voices of rationality ("we should show as many pictures of clitorises as we can find") go unheard.

Amusingly, most of the wankers appear to be men.

Obviously, some people don't think it's so innocent. The people who want a warning or an alternate censored page don't seem to have that attidude, but think that people who do should be able to use Wikipedia without being offended.

It's really fucking sad that it's even a question.

Playing devil's advocate since no one else in this thread will.

I DO like to be warned simply because I tend to look at explicit writing more than explicit images. I know it's just a "fucking body part" and it's there as an illustration instead of titillation, but it's a personal preference. Don't mean there's anything "he hell" wrong with me. When I found out wikipedia allowed them I simply avoided pages I thought may have explicit images if I wasn't in the mood for them, and I managed to do so without belittling the people who didn't care.

Not so much unsuitable in itself, for me--I assume people are arguing "unsuitable in this context." Ie, in the context of work. I suppose the debate comes from more ambiguous contexts. Which, as long as a person is polite about it, I don't think is wanky.

(Any "eww, gross," reactions as an argument, though--yeah, that would be silly and wanky. There's prefering not to look at pictures, and then there's "it's dirrrrrrrty" goofiness.)

Some people do view Wikipedia from work and school, and even if they have no problem with viewing such images, bosses and teachers are irrational. You know that.

Me neither, but many people have bosses, lab monitors, or parents who do. If my sis was doing biology research for school or clicked by accident and there was a clitoris picture in the cache, all hell would break loose.

All I can say is, don't click for an enlarged view of the photo by mistake. Yeeaa-aah. Compared to the golden tones of the penis pics, the clitoris and vulva pics are a bit less something or other. It doesn't really matter though. ::shrug:: As for having a photo or not, good grief. Anyone looking up clitoris on Wiki should expect there probably will be one. Hasn't Robert the Bruce been wanked for needlessly fapping on Wiki before now?

Elephant penises have TWO 'hinges' that make it move in interesting directions. Makes sense, though. The penis would have to bend two different ways to get inside the female. And yep, I've seen the real thing in action. At a zoo, IN FRONT OF KIDS, oh the HORROR!!!

On the other hand, anyone sad enough to be looking up what a clitoris is on Wikipedia, of all, places probably has genuinely no idea what it is, is likely under the impression that it's another word for the mythical "cootie", and for that matter is probably twelve.
