Haven't we seen janusdoa before? I can't remember...
Wank on APoD (Astronomy Picture of the Day).

Satellite image of Katrina just before landfall was Sunday's image. Of course, janusdoa makes the prerequisite "People are stupid for living there"-type comment. People respond, many point out that his journal information reveals him as living in California - a state known for containing an active fault line.

A little bit down, janusdoa and gridlore get into it, referencing things from each other's personal journals.

I'm in there, but I don't wank (at least, I don't think so). At the time, I didn't know janusdoa and gridlore were enjoying each other's company - now I'd pretty much just call troll.

It's not huge, but I thought the personal insults were interesting enough.

Huh, I just said that earlier to someone. At least here in Oregon, all I have to worry about are minor earthquakes and distant volcanoes.

Yeah, I can see the point, essentially. Sure, things could have been handled better, especially considering New Orleans relative vulnerability. Of course, generally New Orleans isn't whacked by Category 5 hurricanes - when the weather reaches them it's usually down to tropical storms and the like. I just don't like this "They should have known better!" attitude - it's not like every year they get hit by something like this and rebuild, giving a huge finger to nature or anything. Generally, it's something they can handle, or New Orleans would've crumbled long before now. If we're going to avoid living in places regularly hit by storms, then the entire state of Florida and Tornado Alley would be considered uninhabitable...

Depends on where you are. Coastal Oregon IS waiting for The Big One, which has been estimated to be about 9.0 on the Richter scale and probably cause a big ass tsunami. The last Big One caused a tsunami that was recorded in JAPAN and sank entire forests of cedar.

The West Hills in Portland are basically all fault zone, too.

Much of Eastern Oregon is covered under what is basically one big basalt flow, the result of a super-eruption, although that is not likely to happen again. The only other super-eruption known exists in Siberia.

The magma dome under the Three Sisters (mostly under South Sister) is building again, we could be looking at another eruption there in the next couple hundred years.

Up in Washington... well basically anyone between Mt. Raineer and Puget Sound could be wiped out in a pyroclastic/lahar flow. It wouldn't even need an eruption to trigger that, just a good strong earthquake. Just imagine, a solid wall of liquid concrete racing toward you at 100 miles an hour. At most people would have about 30 minutes to evacuate.

And this is without even getting into such hazards as forest fires.

The North West is not nearly a tame a people think.

You know, our planet tends to get hit by really big meteors every few million years.

I guess we're all just idiots for living here.

Astronomy Picture of the Day wank.

Now I've seen everything.

I guess I'll add this to my internet rules then.

Rule 4: Nothing is safe from wanking, not even Astronomy communities.

(First three rules boil down to everybody having fangirls, everybody has Mary Sues and every fandom has slash)

I don't get it. I've been told I'm insane to live in Tornado Alley and where 100 degree summers and -20 degree winters are routine. I figure every location has its natural hazards. I don't know where people are going to go to avoid big storms, fault lines, and the like.

I love, more than anything, the "an active fault line" (emphasis mine) thing.

http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/ shows the earthquakes in California and Nevada. Every single brown line is a DIFFERENT fault. Does this idiot know about earthquakes at all?

And that's just California and Nevada. Washington and Oregon have plenty of their own faults.
