Kellogg's doesn't give a shit about you
This one's just weird.

[info]squinting_kitty posts awhile back in [info]feminist her shock! And disgust! At a relatively harmless Kellogg's commercial depicting a thin woman being blown away by a ceiling fan after eating a low-cal Kellogg's product. According to the OP, this is an "extremely harmful portrayal of body image".

She proceeds to write a furious letter to Kellogg's explaining that if they do not immediately remove the offending commercial, she will stop buying their products, which, she explains very specifically in several paragraphs, would amount to about a $200 annual loss for Kellogg's.

When she inevitably receives a vague form letter in return from Kellogg's, she is surprised that it says nothing of removing the commercial, which she had expected them to do immediately. Genuinely confused by this apparent oversight, she says: "I'm tempted to... use their online form to ask them to tell me whether or not they plan on taking that commercial off the air." Yeah, maybe they just forgot to mention it.

When community members point out that, duh, of course a multinational corporation isn't going to change their marketing strategy based on a single letter, [info]squinting_kitty takes offense:

I'm one of those people who holds out hope when logic says there probably isn't a good reason left to hope. If you read my letter to them, you may have noticed that Kellogg's has made over $1000 from me in the past 5 years. In my opinion, that might have made a difference to them, especially considering there was no reason why my patronage should have stopped in the future other than this commercial. But I suppose they didn't give a shit.

Now, if you'd like to be helpful rather than just being snarky about my seemingly pointless hope in humanity, then you could write to them and help me boycott. Show them the snark. I plan to, and I would truly appreciate your help rather than your sarcasm.

You mean to tell me The Man doesn't give a shit about your thoughts OR your $200? The SHOCK!

The only wanker here is the OP, but her self-important naïvete wanks very hard indeed.

LOL

Oh noes! One person isn't going to buy our cereal! Better pull the commercial (which cost many times more than her $200 or even $1000 to make)!

Can you imagine the hours of fun that the mail bag must bring the people at Kellogg's or RJR Nabisco or somewhere like that? I wonder if they have monthly awards for Most Ridiculous Attempts at Financial Coercion. I would be so tempted to put something in there like "Dear Consumer, we're very sorry that our commercial has lost your business and cost us ONE SECOND'S WORTH OF OUR YEARLY REVENUE FROM ONE PRODUCT. We assure you we are treating this matter with all the weight it deserves."

Although, I've discovered that if you write bitchy letters about things and products you are no longer going to buy, they send you coupons for free products! That I'm never going to buy!

It makes a twisty sort of sense.

Am I a terrible person, if I'm kind of tempted to write some angry letters to get the coupons? I'd really like some free jeans, is all.

Last summer, my boss got a pack of cigarettes. In it, two of the cigarettes were hopelessly stuck together, so she wrote the company (think it may have been DuMaurier) a letter about it. In response, they sent her a package to mail the faulty cigarettes back to them and they said they would investigate. When she did, they checked it out and ended up sending her back a letter of apology and a carton of cigarettes. Yes, not a new pack, a carton.

One of my friends found a dead mouse in her box of Kraft mac-n-cheese a few years back.

She sent it in, mouse (complete with half processed bits of macaroni noodles stuck into it), complaint letter, and all, and was given....

....wait for it....

A year's worth of Kraft macaroni and cheese.

"Yeah, just found a dead mouse in your product and I want to eat more of it." was her reaction.
She sent it back to them. :D

Hell, I could throw in my hypothetical $1000 (that Kellogg's would have made if I actually ate cereal) and it still wouldn't make a damn bit of difference. It's a lame commercial, but damn, either find way more supporters or chill.

It always bugs me when people are all, 'O NOES NEGATIVE BODY IMAGE!!!!!'

Hey, kids? It takes two to tango. Yeah, that commercial may promote poor body image, but you should really stop and think, 'Am I going to let a commercial dictate the way I view myself?'

(p.s. - the answer's no.)

My grandfather died when I was a baby, but we only recently inherited a book of his business correspondence. One such exchange is with Kellog's. His original letter (abridged): "This morning in my cornflakes I discovered a small black beetle. I want to know is, should I keep it as you are starting a new line of collectible prizes, or do you want it back?"

Waves of WTF roll off Kellog's letters after that. The whole escapade really made me love my grandfather.

At first I thought her righteous indignation had more to do with a woman being happy she was so "light" she could float away and the implications of being happy in her powerlessness (note that I haven't seen the commercial, I have TiVo). But now, after reading the wank, I just want some cereal really BADLY.
