More apod fun
Astronomy Picture of the Day posts a rather wide panoramic image. People yell at the feed to use lj-cut.

Standard issue pic spam, "Where's the gravity cannons?", cries of "boobies!" and a link to a photo of a streaker.

Possible NSFW on the horizon.

Gah. I <3 APoD, but why must they insist on breaking my flist every other day?

The Saruman pic is priceless though.

I found the thread helpful -- I now have my LJ set to replace all images larger than 640x480 with a placeholder. Including that panorama.

I saw that this morning and was wondering how long it would take APOD to make a wank community. Panoramas bring the wank, yo.

For some reason, no matter which option I chose for placeholders, LJ always replaced ALL images with them. It got to be really annoying, so I just took APoD off. ::shrug::

The only way that LJ can tell the size of the image before it's downloaded is if the person posting it specifies the size in the HTML. Most people are too lazy to do that.

I have "use placeholders for medium images (over 320x240)" set and it's worked for me every time, whether my account was paid or free.

Who maintains the feed?

Someone really needs to explain to people the difference between "feed" and "community." Or better yet, explain how to read LJ's FAQ.

Oh no shit.

I keep thinking, uh, people, placeholders are your friends! That or unsub from the feed.

ok, I think I've missed something. Why are people spamming an astronomy picture feed? Is this a phenomenon or something?

Oh bloody hell, not this again. It doesn't break my layout, so I don't care, but the people talking to the feed are funny.

It's a feed! *whaps them all up the head*

And, see, this is why I take all the photography communities/feeds off my default and put them on a special photography filter. That's always borked, so it doesn't matter.

Dear idiots: LJ can do tricks! Learn them.

Borked or often monstro slow loads depending on one's connection speed and where the posters' pix are hosted.

I do the same thing cause I don't like my pages getting borked. But now I have image placeholders cause I use dial up which sucks. But still...

Dude, I'd ask for an lj-cut on that panoramo. Sure, LJ can do lots of tricks. The lj-cut is one of them. And those are some groovy macros.

Yes, but feeds can't do LJ cuts. That's because they aren't *on* LJ, as such.

Thus the cluelessness of wankers.

In that case I didn't say anything.

Feeds *can* do cuts, if they're set up right. Kittenbreak on LJ uses cuts all the time.

Hmm. Maybe someone could talk to JWZ, the guy who wrote the cheesegrater program that provides the feed, and ask him to add that? I don't watch APOD so I don't particularly care, but he might be interested in the tech. Or maybe not, I don't know. ;)

That picture looks almost identical to some of the landscape shots a friend of mine posted of Burning Man.
