Vegan/Vegetarian wank on [info]mock_the_stupid
"Not going to hell is a better reason not to eat meat than bleeding for the poor wittle aminals (sic)."

[info]camillabloom makes a post mocking an airline cabin attendant who can't seem to grasp the equation chicken=meat. [info]brokenbubble thinks that vegetarians are lame and dumb. Arguing goes back and forth.

And predictably, [info]opalcat uses her forces of bannination.

I think that's a normal reaction for any member of MTS.

Also, general remark, what IS up with the people who eat meat but call themselves a vegetarian? They're the truly stupid ones.

I can't figure it out. I think she just rubs me the wrong way.

Being happily omnivorous, I cannot even begin to describe how little this particular discussion concerns me.

I wish I knew. *sigh* I'm omnivorous too and I had a bad run in with a squawkatarian a couple of years back. She had the rabid vegetarian patter down perfectly: 'meat IS murder!', 'meat is man's inhumanity to animals!' [deletes whole pile of preachy-excuses crap]

All the while I was thinking 'so, how's that chicken sandwich going down?'

It's easier than going on a spiel about not eating red meat for reasons a through z with the caveat that you KNOW chicken is meat but you can't not eat it for reasons b through x.

Personally, I just order the chicken or egg dish and tell people to mind their own fucking business when they ask me if I'm a vegetarian. I don't particularly want to tell and they don't particularly need to know.

Well, I call myself a pseudo-vegetarian. Because I massively hate the way most meat tastes, but still love ham and a good sausage. But I always register places as a vegetarian, because it's easier than just eating the peas when they try to serve me beef/pork/turky/whatever.

I go undercover as a vegetarian.

I do not believe her assertion that most if not all vegetarians understand that the production of their food kills animals. In fact I'm fairly certain most of them DON'T think that.

I also don't understand how she can be surprised that some vegetarians/vegans make themselves irritating. I have a friend who is a tree-hugging hippie vegan and will not eat anywhere that uses disposable dishes, so we can hardly take her anywere foodwise (as we were poor college students until a few months ago and most of the places we can afford serve food in cardboard or styrofoam). And then if we DO take her someplace and nothing on the menu meets with her approval she sits there like a holy martyr and doesn't order anything (and will not ask the waitstaff if, say, they can make her the salad without the cheese or something). A HOLY MARTYR. Even if we offered to GO SOMEWHERE ELSE and she said NO.

And that's not even mentioning all the evangelist vegans and vegetarians. Seriously. I went to college with a crapton of them and if I had a nickel for every time someone told me that meat is murder or that meat or dairy aren't healthy for humans or something along those lines I could treat all of fandom_wank to a beer. u_u

Word.

I don't mind those of my friends who are vegan/vegetarion - because people are only annoying preachy assholes to me once, then we are not friends anymore. but just like the people who can not shut up about politics, or religion, or their dietary choice preachy vegans bother me.

I once took a class where we had to present the two sides of animal testing. This one girl decided that this was her opportunity to lecture the entire class about being evil for consuming meat and that we should all become vegetarians or else we were PUPPYKILLERSOMG!

This went on for about 15 minutes.

Then I asked her what her shoes were made of.

Leather.

Lecture over.

That was a good day.

I don't even buy leather shoes anymore, and I get mad at the vegetarians who do for being hypocritical.

Now why I'm ovo-lacto (I eat eggs and dairy)- it's damn near impossible in America to not eat any animal products, because eggs and/or milk will be in about 95% of all of the stuff you eat. (And you can't eat out in restaurants, either.)

I also know eggs and milk are not a dead animal, and that I myself could NOT survive as a vegan.

The girl was an asshat, indeedy.

But I don't like it when my fellow vegetarians/vegans get all huffy about their diet and try to force it onto other people. If people eat meat, and they enjoy it, then STFU. The only important thing is that I'm doing it. The only time I would even suggest a vegetarian diet is if the person I'm talking to has had three heart attacks because of eating nothing but Big Macs and steak. Then it would be for their health instead of teh animals.
