It's in customers_suck, but it's got nothing to do with tipping. For once.
[info]lots42 (who, I believe, has an account around here) thinks that cutting is always a cry for attention help (oops). This meets with disagreement. Note the special bonus "I <3 cutting" subthread. And, for the ferretlike among us, the whole thread is short enough to read on a coffee break.

o_O

I don't recall [info]lots42 being this... argumentative in the past. Was I just not paying attention?

Well, there is the endorphin rush that you can get from pain, but other than that... I got nothing.

When I posted about cutting once upon a time, a guy I know actually started asking if one couldn't substitute BDSM for it since it was all so similar anyway. Seems to be a widespread (2 people?) confusion.

::dons wanker hat::

I totally don't get cutting. I tend to think it's a manifestation of other problems. I didn't realize there were so many people who "supported" it. I've dated people who used to cut when they were younger, and people who were currently cutting, and all had experienced or were still experiencing some form of depression. But anecdotal evidence isn't worth much, I know.

*shrugs* I used to cut during one of the happiest times of my life, just because it felt cool.

I imagine it is similar to various eating disorders (which can also be hard to "get" if one is not right there within) in which one cuts because it is a ritual that they have to control some part of themselves. One cuts, it hurts, blood is cleaned off and appropriate dressings applied. All this is predictable and a ritual one can have to distract onesself from whatever. And, rather like eating disorders, there is also the chance that someone would insist that it is a "lifestyle choice" or "body modification" or somesuch. And I suppose there might be a few that do it just for the adrenaline of the pain. There's no uniform pattern for self-harm, just as there is no uniform pattern for drug addiction or whatever.

People do it for a lot of different reasons. A Bright Red Scream: Self-Mutilation and the Language of Pain by Marilee Strong talks about several case histories, possible causes, etc.

"If you can't deal with my opinions about cutting, you aren't going to metaphorically survive long on the internet."

Funny. Here I thought 'Fuck you and your ignorant bullshit.' was an exemplary way of dealing with his opinions.

I used to hurt myself, and I didn't do it "for attention". In fact, I would always insist on covering up the places where I had visibly made myself bruise or bleed. I was ashamed when my father spotted one of my leg bruises once, and I had to tell him I'd fallen over. I daresay there are some that hope people will notice their injuries, but others consider it a private affair that they do not wish to discuss. In part, this may well be because they will be accused by certain people of "just doing it for attention". I did it myself because I wanted to make myself hurt. I felt, at the time, that I deserved it. I don't do it any more. I'm sorry if anyone thinks this is "oversharing", but I just wanted to give my perspective :-/

That's exactly the thing... most (not all) people who actually are self-injurers do try to hide it and they definitely don't call attention to it. It's the copycats who are making it all look like some trendy wannabe-goth crap.

Actually he says, "cry for help," which is not the same as seeking attention.

A fascinating little tidbit: the fashion of wearing athletic wristbands when you're not an athlete (ie, ones with the anarchy A or skate logos), as well as wide bracelets or just lots of bracelets, period, originally became popular among people who wanted to hide their cuts. Funny how many people wear them and don't realize that.

I thought cutting, in its disorder format, was somewhat related to other OCD/Impulse Control/grooming disorders like trichotillomania? Except bald patches aren't "sexy" or "edgy", so you aren't going to get teenie wanna-bes with that. :P

There is still a lot of debate about whether trichotillomania is in fact a form of OCD. I don't believe it is. I think it's a nervous habit akin to somebody biting their nails. Supposedly the hair-pulling releases "feelgood" chemicals or some such not-researched-very-well-yet shit.

You're right. Bald patches are less sexy and edgy than something likely to get a girl beaten up. I fucking hated high school because of it.

Just because I think it's a cry for help doesn't mean I think they are any good at it

This is one of my favorite lines from the entire thread.

I never understand people seem to think that some people cut themselves because they have Real Serious Psychological Problems, and others only cut themselves because, you know, they're posers and they want the attention. Because maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me that if you want attention so badly that you start cutting yourself to get it, then you're in the Serious Psychological Issues box too.

I cut myself two or three times, it was just too messy to bother with. I just wanted someone to notice and give me a hug.

I'm a poser. :(
