Pseudo-PETA wank.
Surprised no one has lit onto this one yet.

Over at WTF, Inc., someone posts a link to a video that shows some soldiers shooting and killing a dog, although they're rather sloppy about it. PETA (or ogrish, ftm) doesn't provide any context, as per normal operating procedure.

And the wank begins.

Much of it is very TL;DR, but our wanky friend [info]boomstick is in there fapping away with the rest of them.

Thanks. :) I honestly wasn't trying to be wanky there, but I honestly couldn't understand why they couldn't just shoot it in the head and be done with it. I'll agree and admit that not everyone in the military is going to be able to shoot super-awesome every time, but everyone at least learns how to be a decent shot in basic . . . o_O

I can tell I'm not going over there to tell them about the jack rabbit I essentially beat to death with a shovel anytime soon.

The critter was on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere (litterally, that section of South East Oregon is called The Oregon Outback for a reason). It was alive and panting badly, but couldn't even get up when I poked it with my foot. I don't know what was wrong with it, the road in question was little used, and there were way more dead rabbits on it then what would normally be killed by cars. I think some of the local eagles were bringing their prey to the road to eat (or catching it there) because it's a nice be clear spot amid the sagebrush in an area with no trees at all.

I figured it was a goner, so I did it a favor and ended its life with a shovel. It took me a whole five minutes to work up the courage to do it in the first place, I even thought seriously about running it over in the truck, but that didn't seem right somehow. It took four blows. The reason why I didn't finish it on the first blow was that I couldn't keep my eyes open to aim. I meant to keep them open and hit Jack right, but that's not how it worked out.

It's hard to kill an animal, and I don't mean the act of aiming or whatever. Its hard to whack the shovel (or aim the gun) right because even though you know it's the humane thing to do, there's still a very large part of you looking at this living, breathing animal and knowing that what you are about to do is going to turn it into so much dead meat. It makes you flinch, close your eyes, and screw up. It's possible that the solider in question had never deliberately killed anything before, or at least not anything that wasn't actively shooting back.

You know, that reminds me of a story my dad told me from the time he served in South America when he was with the army. There was this earth mover going down the road, when all of a sudden, this random steer just decideds to run into it head on. Thankfully, it was only going down the road and not doing any construction work (that would have been messy), but still, the steer did not come out the victor in that match.

*snerk* I know someone who's actually working *in* one of the animal shelters set up in Louisiana. She told me way back on Sunday that PETA was lurking around trying to stir up stuff. She also told me that the only animal(s?) the National Guard shot were the ones that tried to attack them; if a friendly animal approached them, they'd pick it up and bring it in.
