Small and sweet BRPS wank
[info]stephanie_clear makes a post in BRPS about whether or not her character should make fun of a character whose mun claims to have bad spelling and grammar due to dyslexia.

There's lots of mostly wank-free replies, but of course there's always one. [info]salem_wikkat, in this case, with a truly abominable grasp on spelling and grammar himself.

Highlight:
Its very rare that I feel this, but damn your pove my belief that some people really need to have been drug out in the street when they where children, only to have their face blown off before they corrupt the rest of society.

May or may not continue, but the ridiculously over the top reaction should keep you warm for the night.

I really can't describe the feeling [info]salem_wikkat is inspiring in me. Schadenfreude just isn't quite right.

Since when were grammar nazis the dregs of society? We're defenders of the faith, man!

Kinda like how your post has the phrase 'grammer hirself' which should actually be 'grammar herself'.

Well, actually I was trying to be all gender neutral about it. Is salem female?

Also for grammar, maybe?

I think there's some kind of karmic law that dictates that a person posting about someone else's spelling etc. mistakes commits a similar mistake him/herself.

D'oh! That's one that I always misspell, too, so I always (or I thought I always) made sure to double check it.

You're referring to Gaudere's Law, btw.

Well damn. That didn't take long at all to get here. I saw that this afternoon, hee!

In other news, [info]salem_wikkat made my head hurt. I'm sure there was a point in his ramblings somewhere, but I couldn't make sense of it beyond, "OMGDUNBESOMEEEN2PPLZW/DIZORDERZ!"

...

A'yup.

Gah. I hate it when people use their disabilities as an excuse for not trying. Are disabilities a reason for why doing something - spelling properly in this case - might be more difficult for you than others? Well, sure. Does that then make them an excuse to do badly? Hell, no. It just means you have to try harder. If you're doing your best and still not doing as well as you should be, then get someone to beta your posts. Is that a pain in the ass? Of course it is. Is it fair that you have to do the extra work when other people don't? Of course it's not. Do you still have to do it anyway? Of course you do.

Newsflash, honey: Every single person has something that's a struggle for them. Every. Single. Person. Your disability makes you human; it doesn't make you exempt from criticism.

- Elektra, who has a rather significant learning disability and yet oddly enough has found a way to live with it

My issue isn't the spelling but the using of a RP character to harass someone the player doesn't like.

If said player has issues with the other player's spelling they need to take it up OOC with either the player or the mod, using their character to get back at the player doesn't seem kosher to me.

I agree that the player should work on their spelling, I just dislike the use of a snarky character for an OOC reason.

You know I've played in games where my character was they type that WOULD laugh at another character for spelling badly. I would never, of course, mock them for doing real-time role play with poor spelling or any role play where my character is not actually 'reading' their character's writing. But if their character is making a journal post that other characters are reading, then I think it's pretty much fair game. Journal posts don't need to be posted immediately and spell-check is right there on your computer (Word comes with PCs and Text Edit and AppleWorks come with Macs), I'm not going to change the way my character reacts to posts just because someone has a handicap that makes it harder for them to spell properly, just like I wouldn't change the way my character reacts if they had a handicap that made it hard for them to interact with other people properly.

And the interesting part was that that was the debate in the other comments, and it was all conducted with a minimum of wank. Except for this guy.

I was running an RPG once that mostly took place online but was a live action game once a month. We had a player who claimed it was "impossible" for him to use the spellchecker in the program because it made him "feel bad" about his learning disability.

We actually *couldn't understand* half of what he wrote, and had to call him on more than one occasion to ask.

I just... gah. I wish I knew what to say to these people that wouldn't give them more of a martyr complex.

But you're right. I was having the conversation the other day with a friend: "All these people thing having a mental illness makes them special. Please find me someone who doesn't seem to have *something* wrong with them emotionally and I'll give you a cookie."

I don't know, I'm kinda inclined to go with the people who say that even using a spellcheck might not help her, if she can't recognize the "right" spelling when she sees it. And to compensate for that may take an inordinate amount of energy for something that's supposed to be fun, not to mention TAKE FOREVER, thus her comment that she "doesn't have time" which other people are reading as laziness.

On the other hand, if it's that bad, what she posts may be unreadable.

My rule is that if you can basically make it out, leave it. Otherwise, take it up OOC. Using your character as a shield to be rude leaves a LOT to be desired.

Yeah, except then expecting other people to RP with her is kind of like...well, the best example I can think of is of playing football when you've got a bad knee and expecting everyone else to keep that in mind, mid-game, and not tackle you on that side. Other people don't have to compensate for your problems, and it doesn't make them bad people if they don't.

Although, yeah, taking it up OOCly is probably the best solution.

I think if people have problems spelling they should choose characters where spelling isn't as crucial. I felt like being lazy in one game, so I chose a twelve year old kid and I can let all my natural typos flow. Another plus, is that kid doesn't care if people correct his spelling, he's pretty used to it and pretty much ignores it. But I've chosen other character where I have to read through four or five times before posting to make sure I haven't messed anything up. Some stuff still gets through so I have to go back and edit when it's pointed out to me. Smart characters can be a royal pain in the ass for everyone involved.
