Ahh...the Buddhists community on LJ. Seeking enlightenment. Practicing non-attachment. Holding grudges agaist The Daily Show?

It all starts with this edition of Stephen Colbert's 'This Week in God'. In it, he mocks the attitudes about Hurricane Katrina held by spokespersons of many religions. We were all supposed to get a good laugh...

But fallentoad</i> is not amused:

i think its good to laugh at stupid religions
except how they took his holyness's words out of context
i mean its ok to poke fun at fake religions, but real religions
now that just gets my goat
well we got a place for him

how about this place
The Hell of Burning Heat is for those holding false views. These beliefs include denial of the law of cause and effect [karma] and denial of the existence of good and evil. In Diamond-beak Hornet Hell, hornets sting so that blood spurts out which the sinner must then drink. This causes great hunger and the victim now has only his own flesh on which to feed.

so how funny will Steven Colbair be when he has nothing to eat or drink---
but his own flesh and blood

I for one will be laughing
maw hahhahaha
take that you holder of false views

Replies vary from "It's just a joke, dude, get a grip" to "Way to act like a real Buddhist".

Just a smidgen of wank, but didn't these people join this comm to get away from being threatened to burn in eternal hellfire?

Y'know, that kind of sums up just about every religious conflict since the dawn of time.

(Although admittedly "laugh at" has frequently been replaced with "annihilate all the members of", but hey.)

Is it not bad karma to laugh at people you think are going to hell? I mean to say, you'd think so, wouldn't you? Mind you, I didn't realise Buddhists had a hell until just now. I thought you just reincarnated as someone with a really shitty life if you were "bad" in your past life. I must ask my stepdad about all this.
