Grammar wank - small but fun
This is rather small, but I do so enjoy fights about spelling and grammar.

Iampunha is announced as the new mod on Grammar Police. Misslynn doesn't like him but thinks he'll make a good mod anyway. That's not enough to stop everyone from telling her to use the shift key. Contains the never-ending debate over writing in lowercase ("it's only the internet" versus "you're not e.e. cummings"), and a mini fight between Misslynn and Iampunha. My favourite part is Misslynn stating that capitalisation has nothing to do with grammar in her book. I don't know what book she's using because, um, yes it does.

I think this calls for: "GRAMMAR IS SERIOUS BUSINESS!" Oh, look, I found the Shift key and the Caps-Lock key.

Beyond that, I think Misslynn is winning the "Dumb Twat" award (offense to twats, I like them very much).

I love how she defends her missing word as proper construction.

i don't think you much better.

Which leads to ...

the "are" is implied.

BWAHAHAHAHAHASNORKCOFFAHAHAHA! Bitch, please.

Then again, I'm so using that the next time I miss a word.

It was implied, yo dummo.

The only thing I could find was this thread, which doesn't seem to be very dramatic. I did find out though, that IAWTC ("I agree with this comment") can also mean "I always want the cock", so my time definitely wasn't wasted.

(Sorry for the repost, JF chopped off most of my comment.)

It's very quiet, passive-aggressive drama, from the looks of it. And upthread... wow. It's almost-wank of the most tl;dr, magniloquent sort.

What is it with the spates of random fighting-the-power-by-refusing-to-follow-minor-rules that are breaking out these days? Are eyebrow-piercing and tongue-splitting and fall-down-your-ass pants not providing enough scope for modern youth to express their individuality? Geez, people, dye your hair swamp-green and learn how to use the frickin' shift key.

I'm so bad about capitalizing when it's not a personal pronoun (see the 'I'), but fuck, I'll admit, it's just my personal laziness. it's not like this is my personal rebellion against the man.

Don't feel bad. I'm sure there's a jurisimprudence law explaining why posting about (or commenting on) grammar/orthography wank invariably leads to typos one would not normally make.

What? Why on Earth does she think people wouldn't care about capitalisation in a community called grammarpolice? Because they're all so laid-back about matters of linguistic prescriptivism?

Some people just have it coming.

It occurs to me that with all the letters she had to type to defend her lack of capitalization, Misslynn could have used the same amount of physical energy to hit the shift key about sixty billion times. Just sayin'.

(Reply to this)

[info]mathilde
2005-09-29 11:01 pm UTC (link)
I hate all of them. Why? E.E. Cummings did capitalize, albeit nonstandardly. Most specifically, he capitalized his own name (though not, usually, "I".) The "e.e. cummings" in single-space font was a typographic conceit on the part of the publisher of some of his books.

I'll go clean up now.

Why do people get so pissy about defending their non-capslocked posts? It takes a hell of a lot less energy to actually use the shift key and it makes you look a lot less arsey if you just say "Sorry. Maybe I should type with capital letters on the Grammar Police community."

'misslynn' just has to get the last word in. "Whine whine... stylistic choice... why does this matter... I'm using vaguely correct grammar... fuck you all!" And what the hell does "The verb is implied!!!" mean? Why can't she just admit she made a typo?

Late to this, but I have to say - the low-level passive-aggressiveness of iampunha's, in tucking little corrective capitals into every reply he posted to misslynn? Made me soooo happy. Yum.

Thanks for the icons, too. I've taken them and have given credit!
