Online Pretentious College Art Wank
Bardcollege is an lj comm for a small liberal arts college in midstate New York. Bard College is full of art idiots (I say this as a sophomore at said institute look to transfer to an art school). Usually an entry will get a max of 20 replies if it's a big important one. This one got 99.

stroudsterb decides he's an art critic. Not that this is a wonderous piece of art, but Bard is full of people who think they know art, so many rush to defend the minimalist 'art'.

Lots of people agree and others rush in to tell him he's an idiot. All of which is, of course, constructive art critique.

Drama is cheap art

theoriginal points out how this wank itself is what makes the two parallel lines art, which is possibly the closest thing to art discussion that happens.

cuntcumber talks about shitting paint

They also bring in the everpressent question at Bard about a 'sculpture' of three large spinning red circles that we have rather unaffectionately named the 'Kotex Statue' for it being a constant reminder of the bouncing red dot in the Kotex commercial. It's not interesting enough to warrant me searching for it through the muck, but whenever someone at Bard brings up the 'What is Art?' argument, the Kotex Statue is always brought up, because it's the uggliest thing on campus after the price-of-a-small-country-and-leaks-anyway Performing Arts Center

Bah. You haven't seen not-art until you've seen Ole Miss's terrifically ugly red and gold sideways S... thing. It only spins when somebody remembers to plug it in though.

XD We have a large abstract bunny-shaped spinning thing that drunk people play on... it is several stories high and just asking for drunken college student dissasters.

Lucky! We just had the Big White Heads. And the patriotic cow, but that didn't last long.

You're just lucky you didn't have to live in a piece of shit modern "art." We had a dorm on campus that was supposed to be a modern interpretation of a medieval castle. Somehow, that translated into "poorly laid out, depressing-looking steel and concrete POS." No wonder the architect killed himself.

XD My dorm was thrown up over the summer. I live in it... and it wasn't there in May. It's not even done yet and there are so many problems. Thankfully Bard is full of people like me who like to sit and laugh at the obvious building faults rather than actually try to get them fixed. (like the doorstops in the wrong places... there is no measuring involved in that... YOU OPEN THE DOOR AND SEE WHERE IT NEEDS TO STOP. Stupidity is my favorite source of amusement.

"for the sake of the artists who have talent, give up now. Switch career choices - go into I-banking or English or science or something."

Hey now! English has enough pretentious literature pricks without throwing more artsy folk in!

And science is full of egos. Shit. Maybe they could go into video-game design?

Lit has enough pretention to meet art head-on any day. I giggle over people use pretentious lit like a brain weapon. 'I'm smarter'n you cuz I've read x = pretentious book of modern poetry.!'

Damn, I just love it when people get all wanky over subjects that have been wanked over since the the Bronze Age.

I bet da Vinci caught shit for painting the Mona Lisa with a smile.

*shrugs* I think it's pretty. I mean, I wouldn't pay money for it or anything, but I could see how someone would. Reminds me of calligraphy, somehow.

My feeling is that 'art' is different to everyone. Therefore the argument is moot... yet so funny.

That Performing Arts Center looks like something from a 1970s-era Girl Scout camp.

Only nowhere near as ugly.

That's probably because it was designed by the same architect, Frank Gehry. Unfortuneately, he didn't understand that NY has snow, so in the winter, sheets of snow will slide off the roof and try to decapitate students... also, it leaks... Fuck you, Frank Gehry. He's famous for this shit, too.

I don't think ours leaks (and with the number of Seattle winters that thing has gone through I'm sure I'd have heard of it by now) but the monorail passes almost within inches of some of its more threatening looking protrusions. It's even more horrid up close. >> I swear you could shoot an elephant on that thing, stake it to a wall and no one would notice.
