More sXey Straight Edge!
So, DanaSuperstar complains that some straight edgers are too millitant and make demands that seem nonsensical. Everyone else goes off on one at her. Pretty little, but already fairly stupid, as XXJayTreasonXX gets in there with vast posts about "roots" and "brotherhood" and has some conflict with ShanePederson, who appears to be a troll they haven't got around to banning as yet. I should join this community, you know.

Edit: This appears to be a follow-on from this in which people are asked for how long they've "claimed edge" and Dana wonders why you can't be "edge" your whole life.

No infant is capable of making the commitment to never in their life drink or smoke or use recreational drugs.

Right, and once you become older, you automatically STICK to your "commitment" to a lifestyle for the REST OF YOUR LIFE and NEVER CHANGE YOUR MIND. I'd say that no one, period, is able to make that sort of a commitment and say that it will last for the rest of their life.

Oh, except monks. Who never leave the monastery. Because they have someone enforcing it. I think.

That whole argument in the second link sounds a lot like how Bobby and Mary decided to get married in HS because they loved each other SEW MUCH even though their friends told them that it was a shitty idea and they would probably change their minds. And then they did. And were happy.

Uh, I like pie?

It appears to be something that grew out of some part of the American "hardcore" music scene in which a culture of abstaining from drink, drugs, cigarettes and casual sex was established. Of course, many arguments are had in this livejournal community alone about how permissive it is possible to be while remaining "edge". Can one be "edge" and eat meat? Can one be disinterested in "hardcore" and yet keep the label? Plus, that community attracts a few trolls and yet doesn't seem to know to ignore them, so that just adds to the fun :)

I think I've mentioned this is a previous sXe wank, but I am a prudy square, and it was a total shock my senior year of high school when I learned that a bunch of freshmen punk people were *admiring* me for being so "edge" (I had no idea what that meant) because I didn't party, have sex, get piercings or tatoos, or eat junk food (much). Then one of them started talking to me in art class, and tried to get me to go to a punk concert, and I declined, saying that I didn't like loud music, and was trying to preserve my hearing.

Her: Oh! I never thought about that! It's so NOT edge to listen to loud music because it, like, totally destroys your ears! What kind of music do you listen to?

Me: Er, classical?

Her: Man! I've GOT to tell people about this, 'cause Mozart, is like, a massage for your brain, right? It would be so edge to listen to it!

And that was when I decided that punkers were insane.

So basically, DanaSuperstar wants the extra speshul that comes from being "edge" her whole life. The other members say no, you're edge from the moment you choose to be edge; you don't get extra cookies for not smoking, drinking, and screwing in kindergarten. DanaSuperstar screams that they're all being meen and want her to draw X's all over her body.

Dana! Babe! You're in the wrong community for a sensitive flower like yourself. Go claim you were betrothed at birth to a spirit-plane version of Jack Sparrow. I guarantee you you'll find people to believe you.

Now, there's a trend someone should start.

I am remotely related to an Oakland punk princess who has confided to me that Edge people scare her more than the gang kids who used to hang around outside clubs to beat up punks. Straight Edge seems to be an argument that drugs and alcohol are good for ones social integration.

Whenever there's sXe wank, I learn something new. This time I learned that drawing black Xes on your hands is a far bigger statement than just choosing not to use substances. Since obviously sXe is a calling and not a choice at all. And using sharpie on your hands? Totally edgy.

I need a drink.

I suddenly remembered reading about teenagers that got a cheap buzz from the fumes of their big marker pens. I don't know if American ones have the same sorts of chemicals in, but it would be amusing to imagine a Straight Edger in conflict over whether drawing on their hands is now "breaking edge". After all, who knows what sorts of chemicals can be absorbed through the skin? Can't be too careful, you know. Constant Vigillance!

I think there are still some brands of markers that have fumes that'll get you high or at least make you sick.

But that seems like a good question to pose to the sXe commnunity, and watch them implode see what they have to say about it.

See, this is why, in spite of considering myself a straight-edger (since I was 17, as it relates to the wank at hand), I'm not involved in any of the communities. Of course, there are those that wouldn't say I'm a "real" straight-edger because I'm not vegan, I take medication when I need it, and I think most hardcore punk music is a joke. But, to that, I say bah. It's supposed to be a personal oath in the first place, isn't it? Why get so bent out of shape over somebody else's oath?

It seems to me that most social groups have their fair share of people you'd cross the road (or possibly even the town) to avoid. I don't mean to seem as though I'm making fun of Straight Edgers who are perfectly sensible by posting all these sXe wanks. I mean, the moderator of that community seems harmless enough, and several of the other posters look okay. It's just when you mix these posters with the loonbags and trolls that explosions happen.

I suspect that some people feel that their only power is to lord it over people who aren't following a scene properly. It's a little like those who are much better fans of your favourite band than you will ever be, because they were there since, like, the beginning!!

I think thats referd to as a superiority complex. I see it alot in herbacidle lunatics vegans, perticulary those that are bedfellows of animal rights activism. They oft take to waving it at people as if it were a sceptre that bestowes them with moral high ground because they are more-compasionet-than-thou (despite actions that blow holes in that like a 12ga. loaded with double aut.) The noisey ones make such an awful and obnoxious racket that it becomes easy to forget there are level head ones amongst them.
