Pagan/Poly Metafilter Wank
Well, Halloween just passed and Mefites celebrated by doing what they do best: insulting one another, freaking out over religion and bringing the wank. Someone posts a link to Isaac Bonewitz's neopagan.net in order to generate some discussion about the history of and myths surrounding Halloween. The pagan bashing has barely begun when someone spots the word "polyamory" on the site.

And they're off!

Some would like to vote pretty much everyone off the island:

pagans. what a bunch of pretentious douchebags.

i'd like to ship them, the fundamentalist athiests, and the "Christian" evangelists off to some island and let 'em fight out it out. Then nuke the site from orbit. (it's the only way to be sure.)

Everyone knows that women only become polyamorous to justify their promiscuity:

So why is a polyamorous witch funny? Let's see, ok: guys have been making up stories and justifications for sex also since forever. It's just amusing to imagine a women who tells herself she not just sleeping around, she's actually, I dunno, fulfilling her duties.

Some managed to ignore the polyamory aspect:

When did it become acceptable to point and laugh derisively at a person for their sexual preferences and religion?

When their "religion" is a broadcast of their insecurities. You declare yourself a witch either because you hate your parents or because you want attention.

Polyamory explained, Metafilter style:

you can dress up polyarmory as much as you want; it's still just a fancy word for "slut."

Oh? You resent being called a slut? How judgemental of you!:

So you think being a slut is a bad thing? Talk about a value judgement. Looks like you have your own bias's.

There are a few brave souls in there trying to be reasonable about the whole thing but it pretty much goes on and on and on like that, although this is Metafilter so they manage to work in some fat bashing as well.

Mmmmm...Metafilter. You never disappoint.

YES! That's why people married multiple men/women - not because of political, social, religious, or practical reasons, but because they're sluts! And mistresses were only there to look pretty. Yeah.

Yes, because being a Pagan has NOTHING to do with a profound, deeply spiritual connection to the forces of nature and the rhythms of the earth and the power and beauty of the Lord and Lady. Nothing at all. And polyamory has nothing at all to do with recognizing the human capacity for limitless love and affection.

Asshats.

Not to be nitpicky, but quite a lot of Pagans really do have nothing to do with those things. Not all Pagans are Wiccan.

Actually, I'm not Wiccan, I was just making more a generalized statement. I'm very well aware that Pagan =/= Wiccan.

As far as I am informed, it actually doesn't. Noone in the poly community says you can love everyone or even more than just a few people. There are constraints there.

I really have no clue what being poly has to do with being Pagan, though. I didn't knlow those two were connected at all.

Ouups, I think I meant 'limits' in that context. Damned English.

I know a number of Wiccans and Pagans who would be somewhat offended at being associated with polyamory. (For some Wiccans at least, it has something to do with Lord/Lady dualities and having more than one throws off the cosmic balance or some such)

Er, in my case, no, it doesn't. Pagan != Wiccan (and other Pagan religions of the type). =(

A Pagan is any member of a religion that is not Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, then no. Most Pagan religions have absolutely nothing to do with the rhythms of the earth mother or whatever.

And it's awesome!

But I really wouldn't call all other religions pagan. I don't think it's pc and I don't think I like it.

As much as I hate to be associated with that troll, I can see where they're coming from a little.

I mean. I have some wiccan and pagan friends who I deeply respect. But, I swear, when you get around to the people who seem to have adopted wicannism because they just got a little *too* into Ren Fest or the internetwackos/highschoolers who are all "I'm pagan, doesn't that freak you out!!!"--I just find it very difficult to not break into peals of uncontrollable laughter whenever they open their mouths. And, sadly for the sane members of the wiccan/pagan community, it's the above people who tend to be the loudest.

I mean, seriously, Silver Ravenwolf anyone?

...Riiiight. Paganism=Shriner clowncar, polyamory=promiscuity, and trolls who 'resent the assertion that [they're] troll[s]'.

Why didn't anyone tell me I needed a clowncar? Also, as for humping a tree- where do I find out how to avoid those nasty splinters? I don't want to be derelict in my duty as a treehugging 'retard'!

- Central to my belief system is that the world is pretty much 90% as we see it and as science can explain it.

- Considering that we live in a universe where 4% of the matter is accounted for, I think you're in for a rude awakening. I hate to be there when you wake up, but enjoy the 19th century while you still can.

ARG! *starts shooting people*

One does *not* pluralise with an apostraphe! NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER.

There are many spelling and grammatical errors I can forgive or ignore, but pluralising with an apostraphe is just NOT ONE OF THEM.

You wear a Shriner hat and drive a tiny car in July 4th parades?

What the hell do Shriners have to do with pagans? I was a patient at Shriners's hospitals for years and I don't remember anything pagan.
