Holland, the giant European trailer park.
So, yet another fun day in the sXe community, that place for earnest, humourless punks who like to keep "poison-free". _Electrixx posts a link to an article about the relaxation of drug laws, which inspires Extrophic_Ghost to complain about the dreadful, filthy state of Holland, where they sell mouldy bread in shops and young girls openly prostitute themselves on the street, and he knows because he's been there. Even old favourite XXJayTreasonXX gives him the WTFs. Small but tasty. I love this community :)

[info]extrophic_ghost: Also, I have VERY strong anti-drug beliefs so it probably bothered me more than the normal person.

I'm not sure A has anything to do with B. Seriously, did you read this guy's journal? More hate than at the Phelps family thanksgiving.

Well, hey, if living at home with parents who smoke when you're kept from being an oppressed member of the proletariat by the fact that you don't have any real problems wouldn't make a guy bitter, I don't know what would.

"Holland, where they sell mouldy bread in shops and young girls openly prostitute themselves on the street, and he knows because he's been there."

We have that kind of things going on here? Damn! You'd expect that in the dead cheap shop where I pick up my bread I would get this mouldy bread he speaks off, but mine is always quite fresh! I want mouldy bread now, it's probably like mouldy French cheese, it adds to the taste.

As for the young girls, eh, that might happen. As it also happens in whatever country he's from as crime is pretty damn global.

Ghost fellow: "They sell marijuana in coffee shops like it's normal,"

Er, yeah. 'Cause that sort of thing IS normal over here. It's legal to sell it in coffeeshops. The silly thing is that the coffeeshops get in trouble if they have too much in stock and that it's not legal to sell weed to coffeeshops.

"The whole country is gross, prostition is legal there too."

Er, yeah. Prostitution is legal in certain parts of certain large cities. And this is a bad thing because what?

Also, could people please please PLEASE say the Netherlands? 'Cause Holland is technically the name of two provinces, and not the whole country.

Because sex is bad and God hates whores. Obviously.

*eyeroll* I don't get people who think that if it's illegal, it won't happen. It's the world's oldest profession for a reason, people, so can we just suck it up and make sure they get their physicals?

"They sell marijuana in coffee shops like it's normal,"

I could tell him something completely abnormal. Every cafe, bar and tourist information centre I went into in Amsterdam served ICE COLD bitter lemon.

In HUGE glasses!

*adopts the glassy-eyed mania of a quinine addict*

I <3 The Netherlands. In the UK I have to order 3 times my own bodyweight in GIN to get that much bitter lemon in one glass!

...

I missed the hookers & dope part of the city tour, obviously. *sigh*

"It's a trashy place you don't want to visit unless you're a druggie."

I give that a hearty "bitch, please." I didn't go there for the drugs, I went for the art galleries and museums, which didn't strike me as particularly "trashy." Assuming this person really has been to the Netherlands, it sounds like he never stepped outside the Amsterdam Red-Light District.

For serious. The sex museum in Amsterdam is a bit more silly than necessary, but the city as a whole wasn't trashy; it was beautiful. And I had no contact whatsoever with drugs while I was there. Perhaps he is thinking of a different Holland.

For one thing there are no "rights". Rights don't exist, there are just things you have the strength to do and things you don't. "Rights" is a concept used in government propaganda to oppress people, to make them think they should have to be granted permission to do something. In my way of thinking, since I can do something that automatically gives me the right to.

bzuh?

Being drug free does make us better, and it does give us the right to judge stupid, self-destructive idiots who smoke weed, we are more fit to survive than them.

That's funny. And here I thought our ancestors, who survived to breed us, were quite fond of the various little plants and hallucinogenics they'd do.

Silly me.

I've been to the Netherlands for about half of my holidays. That means I have visited it about 15 times in my life, with at least 1 week at each visit.

The Netherlands aren't filthy. Most Dutch people are also very nice and don't mind me only being able to speak German and English, not Dutch with them.

I've been to Amsterdam and I loved it! The people are kind of cold and say exactly what's on their mind, but they're nice too. That's just from what I've seen though. Very open about pot, but the only real problem I've seen is pickpocketing and that's everywhere.

My mother's been there twice and doesn't like it as much. Then again, if it's "Not Greek", it can't be good. ;)

My boyfriend loves Schiphol Airport so much that every time he flies to a conference in Europe, he tries to get routed through Amsterdam. He keeps telling me that one day he's going to take me there to see the art museum. I'm like "Couldn't we just go to Paris? They have a nice museum or six there," and he's all "GRAGH YOU MUST GO TO SCHIPHOL." What do the Dutch put in their water, anyway?
