NaNoWriMo Wank
http://www.livejournal.com/users/dasein_fiasco/43715.html

I thought about making this clairvoyant, but the OP seems to be typing with one hand already.

So then it's a personal endeavor, where the pleasure goes to the participants, not posterity. Okay, but who wants to write 50,000 words of tripe just to prove themselves and buck their lazy habits? No writer I'd ever want to read, that's who. Good writers will gladly trade up ten pages of shit for one powerful sentence, and National Novel Writing Month is a phenomenon encouraging the exact opposite approach.

He also seems to be trolling the LJs of Nano participants, so I'm sure there'll be more wank in the comments later.

Wow... well. One; that's a whole bunch of tl;dr and two, of what I did skim read, he's comparing it to science experiments, and saying everyone is a hack and that the participants have no lives, etc, etc.

Well. Alright, I suck at science so not going to touch that one. But the second one... well. No. Wait. I don't have a life either.

Does this mean my reason for participating in NaNoWriMo --to have fun and challenge myself-- is the worst reason ever? ;_;

I don't want to be the next Hemingway/Shakespeare/whatever... I just want a finished story that I can say: "I wrote that. It's mine."

Someone is taking themselves too seriously.

Boy. That poster really has nothing remotely resembling a life, does he O_o ::sniffsniff:: ... >_> ...am I the only one who smells the distinct odor of sour grapes emitting from [info]dasein_fiasco's direction?

... and besides ... don't we do this every year? Fifty-eighth verse, same as the first.

Yes, because the entire point of writing is to publish. I say from now on we should discourage children from drawing-- if they don't produce a masterpiece the first time, they'll never get any better. And the first time gymnasts fall, well, they can hand in their leotards. And the next time a scientist ends up with a failed experiment, well, he should find another career. Because remember, the only way to success is to sit staring at a wall until you spontaneously erupt with genius.

Bitter much? Eh, I do want to get better, but right also to write faster, since my long plot bunnies usually end up dying when I ignore them or when they stay getting dust.

I'll do the editing bitchslap when November ends.

I'm not going to quote his entire tl;dr diatribe about science experiments. I'd just like some of whatever he's been smoking.

We live in a world where penicillin owes its development to accidental fungal overgrowth. Attenuated vaccines can be traced to the fact that Louis Pasteur went on a vacation. So if a bunch of nonscientists attempted to make some amateur efforts into research, I would say more power to them.

Now, Nanowrimo is just in the wrong fucking month for me, but damn. WHINE WHINE QUANTITY OVER QUALITY BAD WHINE WHINE BITCH BITCH. We *know*, everybody knows. But guess what? If it gets you to write? You'll find the damn quality within the damn quantity.

And in December? You can trim!

Writing is much more like laboring at a workbench than it is letting the words flow unbidden from your pen.

If writing was like toiling away on...whatever you make with workbenches, I would've quit years ago.

So then it's a personal endeavor

Maybe the fact that I'm a NaNo participant makes me unable to see this, but...yeah? So what?

Christ, I could've written at least 15 pages of shit in the time it took to read this.

And why does he care so much?

I do see his point, sort of, about the quality / quantity thing. But I thought the purpose of Nano was about quantity over quality, because one big problem in writing is feeling that something has to be perfect before you can move on.

But his whole "unexperienced waaaaahh" comparison to scientists MADE NO SENSE. Writing is something everyone can do, if they practice and work hard and are willing to use criticism. And Nano is about the practicing.

In my writing experience, NaNo helps the creative process a whole damn lot. Get the first jet out, then do the real work.

Last year, I was a Creative Writing student. In two classes, we had to write the beginning of a novel. I cleaned up and submitted the beginning of my NaNo novel from that year(and yeah, asked permission from the second teacher to resubmit the same story, I just reworked it a bit more). Results? A-, then A. Teacher #2 sent me an email to tell me to keep writing and try to publish it. NaNo's at least good enough to fool published authors, it seems, and that's good enough for me. *shrugs*

Well, I say scientist sometimes have to write aprox. 30.000 words of crap in much less than month. My lab partner and I once had to write a 60 pages project for some shitty funds things in a week. Certainly, we didn't edit it much, but we won anyway.

Besides, writing is for free and reactives for scientific experiments are hella expensive.

I have no idea why I'm saying this at all, damn.

What if, every year, thousands of amateur scientists ... decided that, for a given month, they would try to create a useful experiment or theory of physics that, while rushed and clumsy, promised an imagined potential of future publication in trade magazines or at least personal accomplishment through the millionth human repetition of the two slits experiment?

That would be fucking awesome, and I would volunteer to be on the screening committee for the results. It would take about two seconds to eliminate the crap, and the rest might actually be on to something.
