Come One, Come All, Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls of All Ages, and see the Great Oppression-Off of 2005, only on Metaquotes!

See [info]ravrhi post [info]kimpire's funny comment about the ineptitude of CNN!

See [info]haldirsbitch giggle about how black people who don't like being called 'black' are 'off their nut'!

See [info]karnythia take it personally!

See the resultant argument:

"I'm black! Your ancestors oppressed me!"
"No they didn't! I'm Irish! I'm just as oppressed as you!"
"Nuh-uh!"
"Yuh-huh!"
"NUH-UH!"
"YUH-HUH!"

Fun for the entire family!

The Irish faced planty of discrimination, but they became white

... Wow, clever trick. The Africans should try that sometime, it would make all this simpler.

I guess we should. We tried African-American and that hasn't really worked.

In a strange, backwards way, this isn't as far-fetched a statement as you'd think -- a lot of the language that anti-immigration movements in the 1800's used to describe the Irish is almost exactly the same as the inflammatory language used to refer to African-Americans in the 1900's.

I doubt, however, that the OP was aware of this...

Became white?

Baby, we're IRISH. You don't get much whiter than us. Heck, some of us are pretty damn near translucent.

Seriously, I went on a rafting trip once and this very nice black lady and her family kept slapping sunscreen on me because they were worried about me. According to her I was the whitest person she had ever since. Which is fair enough since it was the first time my legs had seen the air that year.

....it's late and I'm doing nanowrimo. You don't get coherence out of me this month.

The irony of karnythia and haldirsbitch is that they're actually both right.

I just came in here from wading in there with my hip boots and trying to gently point that out -- too soon to tell whether they see it, though.

The conversation on dwarves and midgets is so far calm -- but I am very curious at the reaction to my post that I'm actually distantly related to Mrs. Tom Thumb. (Seriously, I am.)

Posted here because I didn't want to get up and find my hip-boots before wading into the fray:
Someone over there mentioned that Irish gentry moved to the colonies and owned slaves in the south. Um... not so much. If you mean Irish as in owned land in Ireland, well yeah, ok. But they weren't ethnically Irish, they were Scotch-Irish, which is something else altogether.

Ha! I see your oppression, and raise you a disabled and a polyamorous!

At one point, I was thinking of converting to Judaism. A Jewish friend asked me why, and I said, "Because I'm feeling insufficiently oppressed."

He stared at me for a minute, and said, "You know...there's really nothing I can say to that.

Slightly OT: For some reason I'm reminded of one of my high school friends, whose father was black and mother was of German descent. One side traced back to slaves, the other to KKK members and Nazis. She often joked that her own body was oppressing itself.

This "I'm more oppressed than you" stuff reminds me of the ongoing Fruits Basket debate over whether Yuki or Kyo is more tragic, i.e. pointless and neverending.

Okay, as a friend of [info]haldirsbitch, I have to say she's one of the most awesome people ever.

Which is why I'm confused as to why she got into this conversation in the first place. Usually she just sits back and laughs at the people who think that your-ancestors-oppressed-mine distinctions matter in the first place. Because they don't matter.

Dear Abbey,

It's entirely possible that some of my ancestors owned black slaves in America. In fact, considering that I'm mostly German and English, it's possible that my ancestors have oppressed just about everybody else on the planet at one time or another, including some of my other ancestors.

Should I just kill myself? Or would it be more appropriate to shave my head and wander the earth as penance? I'm so confused about what's PC right now...

Signed,

A Puzzled Mutt-American

I thought Karnythia was being pretty reasonable. She wasn't saying "Your ancestors could, conceivably have oppressed black people, therefore you must feel OMG TEH GULTIEZZ," she was saying, "Your ancestors could conceivably have oppressed black people. End of sentence."

But then again, I'm white, and I nevertheless find white people whining about PC language to be second in tiresomness only to guys whining about how they can never figure out what those crazy wimminfolk want. White privilege exists. You don't have to have a pointy hood and a bedsheet with sleeves in your closet to benefit from it. Stop with the fucking kneejerk defensiveness, already.

Now what was funny about the quoted gaffe was the U.S.-centricness of it.

I once got into an argument with a guy in class, because he claimed that the Irish were descriminated against MORE than Black people in the US. Now, I know they were discriminated against... but I definately don't see them being as badly treated as Black people, especially during the Jim Crowe era.

Then again, I'm Hispanic, so at the MOMENT, I'm being discriminated against more than anyone else I know.

Lets see how long it lasts.

Which is to say, not a whole heck of a lot.

I would just like to say that as night person, I feel oppressed by the tyranny of the morning people who insist on starting things at 8 am, when no sane person should be awake.

Also, I'm a mix of Latin American, Irish, and Russian. Where do I rank on the oppression scale (lesbian and pagan also included)?

B: Well, that doesn't necessarily mean that none of your ancestors oppressed black people, just saying.
C: SO WHAT? Stop pulling the race card, racist!

And the winner is ... still the CNN. "Two African-American teenager" BAHAHAHAHA I don't want to laugh at their deaths but that's too much.
