Black People Can't Be Racist!
I was wandering through the Customers_Suck community over on lj and came across this

Note: All the "No, they can't!" type comments are from the same person, a miss [info]the_bee_queen Nearly a year old, but one of the goofiest things I've seen in a while that doesn't concern HP fandom.

They can't!: you cant be racist if you're a minoritity--racism is prejudice combined with power--in the case of the customer--maybe--because she has power over the cashiers who are working "for her"--but in reality, black people can't be racist--they don't have the same power structure that white people are so firmly settled into in the western world..

They can!: Racism-The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

I see nothing in there about power. Therefore, it is possible for a minority to be racist, but like the person who responded, what you said is just as valid, because they don't really have the same power structure as white people. And like the other person said, bigoted is such a great word, and it ugly :P

NO, they can't!: sorry, i dont live according to dictionary definitions--things are a little bit more nuanced in the "real" world--same reason why i don't live within academia or believe in "academic communities"--read "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" for a better explaination of what I brought up.

"I see nothing in there about power. Therefore, it is possible for a minority to be racist, but like the person who responded, what you said is just as valid, because they don't really have the same power structure as white people" This contradicts itself--so my statement was wrong, but just as right as blacks being racist? I don't follow, sorry.

Really, it's impossible!: wow i sound snarky, sorry. i just dont see why you copied in a dictionary definition and then told me that my point was wrong, but valid. i don't believe it is possible for a minority to be RACIST--perhaps according to a tight dictionary definition, but i look at racism, as well as many others--as a social structure--which goes beyond saying "nigger bad" or "kike cheap"--and therefore, this social structure cannot be perpetuated by minorities.

at the very least, majorities benefit from the racist status quo already in place which makes them nonintentionally racist.

it's a complex theory but it makes a lot of sense, read the book, im explaining this like shit and probably just sound stupid.

You are so full of crap!: wow, you must have so much power, seeing how you can argue your point without the boundaries of real words.

Oh Yeah!? I'm intelektual!: what are you talking about? without the boundaries of real words? without boundaries of academia maybe.

oh is academia made up to you?? stop trolling :)

Riiight!: Actually, many a debate has been won or lost due to a dictionary. It's fun and all to tote around your own definitions of words, but if you're going to have a resonable discussion I'm afraid that the definition in the dictionary wins and "sorry, i dont live according to dictionary definitions--things are a little bit more nuanced in the "real" world--" at that point only seems like saying: "I'm right because of my own special definition of this word."

But I'm all about the research!: yes but the dictionary does not contain a definition for racism as an institution--only racism as a verb/adjective/noun. i hardly think i'm saying "im right because of my own special definition of the word," i'm saying "i'm right because of countless academic research that has been made applicable to reality." racism as a part of the status quo, not OMIGOD BLACKS CAN BE RACIST WHEN THEY HATE WHITES.

Now look at these side by side:

i don't live within academia or believe in "academic communities"

i'm right because of countless academic research that has been made applicable to reality.

Automatic loss! Black people win the right to be racist! Thanks for playing, try harder next time, etc.

only racism as a verb/adjective/noun.

Noun? Yes. Adjective? Yes. Verb? Uh, no. *facepalm*

Nope. Not seeing anything here that's specific to caucasians.

Well, I think I get what she's trying to say. Racism as a society-wide, institutional thing is generally perpetuated by a majority against a minority. If the argument was that this one black person being prejudiced means that there's some sort of general racism amongst all black people on this particular topic, then she'd have a point to argue.

However, what she seems to have forgotten is that society-wide racism is really only made up of thousands of individuals with racist opinions. She's outlining the wider cultural definition while denying the smaller individual cases. A racist society is made up of a bunch or racist people. Arguing that someone's personal beliefs just don't count because they're not part of a bigger whole is stupid.

Basically, it's like arguing that a tree isn't really a tree because it's not located in a forest.

That's exactly the problem I have with it. It makes no sense considering society is made up of, um, people.

That, and the constantly insisting that only the people who agree with you know the "real" definition of racism instead of hacks like Webster....kill it.

No. No, she's really not.

Racism != racial prejudice. It's a really simple concept, honestly.

Tatum's book ("Black Kids")
(Anonymous)
2005-11-11 09:41 am UTC (link)
I recently had to read this book "Why are all the Black Kids sitting together in the Cafeteria" for my college course. It is one strange lady's opinion with little to no research or objective study involved. We had to write a paper on it and a guy in my class actually wrote his paper identifying the main themes as: 1. White people are the devil 2. All white people are KKK members (there actually is a section in the book stating that all white people are racist and if they aren't activists then they are essentially working with the KKK) 3. Segregation is the greatest! Racial segregation whoohoo!
Anyone who would take this book seriously and use it in their argument needs to take a lesson in critical thinking... aka using a bullshit detector.
P.s. sorry for the anon post, I don't have an account :-(

So side A calls phenomenon X "racism", while side B calls it "discrimination or prejudice based on race". Phenomenon Y, on the other hand, side A calls "structural racism" (or just "racism on bigger scale"), but side B "racism".

Now, since they agree on X and Y both existing, one might think that simply noting how they define terms would make everyone happy and capable of continuing the discussion, but no! By gum, this very important battle of defining other people's words must rage over whine community and *_wank community alike.

Actually, from a sociological perspective, she's correct. That's absolutely correct. The group that is devoid of social power can be prejudiced, but the strict (sociological) definition of racism (sexism, et cetera) IS prejudice + power. Prejudice without power is bigotry.

Her mistake was thinking that anybody on the Intrawebs gives a shit about education or intellectual validity - hers or theirs.

I find it entertaining that people don't understand why a person would jump to the conclusion that they're being treated like shit because of their race. If you'd been told your whole life that your skin color is *probably* the reason you were being treated poorly and if your experience showed you that was true, you best believe you'd come to that conclusion too.

And then on top of that, people informing you, silly negro/wetback/oriental/redskin/yatta, that there *is* no racism, only crazy rednecks are racist, you're just hypersensitive... *shakes head*

I've been known to tilt at a few windmills in my day, but when you take a common-or-garden English word and insist that it can only ever be used in a restricted way that the vast majority of people you encounter find to be counterintuitive, maybe it's time to suck it up and coin a new word or phrase which only conveys the restricted meaning you desire?
