The joy of sXe.
My sincere apologies.

Another delightful session in the sXe community, that temple to clean-living and shouty music as a way of life. __TheAnalogKid posts on the subject of what the "XXX" in Straight Edge popular culture and merchandise signifies. Quite soon, this devolves into an argument about the precise definition of "promiscuous sex", featuring ShorXRore versus XProudXToXBeX, XWithout_LifeX and a couple of others. Everyone is annoying and stupid here, so it's fun for all the family :)

straight edge's "rules" have been laid down by years and years of edge bands and members of the community

I knew the rules were fake.

I feel sorry for the other 25 letters in the alphabet that are sadly underused in these people's usernames. 'X' deserves a vacation full of booze, whores, and drugs.

Agreed. It actually was on the banned words list of 2004; maybe these people think it's already had its vacation?

That right there shows that you don't understand what X is all about. Because X would never do that, unlike that SLUTBITCHWHORE E.

I'm sorry, you're quite right. E is in like every bad word: Boobies, asses, beer, ecstasy, heroin, cunties, weed, cocaine, whore, wine, sex, levelheadedness.

It's all about the X and the underscore. I'm waiting for someone called "XXX__XXX" to show up.

Wait, I only believe in monogamy because of religion? Even though I'm not part of any religion that has any tenents about monogamy? Damn, here I was thinking I'm monogamous because of a personal moral choice. Silly me.

I think the point that was being made is that monogamy is a social construct (and, if you want to be accurate about it, actually one that predates most if not all recognised religions), and not one that would occur at all if we were behaving "as nature intended". This is not to say that monogamy is inherently wrong or evil, and if you want to be monogamous you are perfectly welcome to. However most people are not aware of this, simply because it's been around for so long that it's very much ground right into the collective unconscious :)

...yeah, because all those animals that are naturally monogamous? Totally just doing it because of social pressure. I just wonder how the tradition got started then, if it isn't natural-- if polygamy were natural in humans, wouldn't that be the thing ground into our social consciousness instead? (I'm not trying to start anything-- I really am curious.)

Actually, most science books I've read has put humans down as a slightly polygamous species, in that most men would naturally only have one wife, but the boss might have two or three while the lowest ranked losers would never marry. And nowadays, monogamy's the only official form of marriage, of course, but most people I know aren't exactly surprised when they find out that some politician has a mistress on the side, so it's not like some form of polygamy is totally foreign.

In many places, polygamy is part of the social consciousness. (It's even in the Old Testament - Rachel and Leah, wives of Jacob, being probably the most famous example).

Wiki even has some statistics:

George P. Murdock’s Ethnographic Atlas recorded the marital composition of 1231 societies, from 1960-1980. Of these societies, 186 societies were monogamous. 453 had occasional polygyny, 588 had more frequent polygyny, and 4 had polyandry.

That statistic I always got in my anthropology classes was that 80% of human societies have been polygamous, 15% monogamous, and 5% whatever it is you call it when one woman marries multiple men (andogamous?). As to how it got started. . .well, cultures have interpreted biological imperatives in different ways. One theory about monogamy is that it makes for a more stable society because you have less unattached males running around causing problems.

so, long story short: the first rule of sXe is there are no rules?
and the second rule of sXe is you do not talk about sXe?

i've never really been able to understand what sXe people go on about.

I think I'm getting the hang of this concept of sXe.

Drugs are bad, and alcohol is bad, and some-but-not-all sex is bad, but swearing and stupidity are both A-okay.

So if it's no street drugs, no alcohol, and no cigarettes, why is some sex okay? Because chastity would be hard?

Damn.

Impression 1: Is sXe against spelling, grammar, and capitalization too? Is correct English the new heroin?

Impression 2: If I see the phrase "sex should be with someone you love" one more time, my teeth will fall out.

An inspired keyboard mash, there. [info]xproudxtobex (I didn't realise that in autumn 2005 of Internet fashions, "x" was interchangeable with " ") calls that being pwned, and I think it's either because s/he admires [info]xxxvegan for his/her grasp of capital letters, or because of the many appearances of the letter Q.

...was I ever this righteous as a young person? Probably, since I was a punk (in the sense punk was understood before Hot Topic and this thing called the 90s). Oi.

Oh, I LOVE the part where some idiot is saying 'a man can be a whore too!'

Dude.

Have you ever, EVER heard ANYONE call a guy a WHORE? And didn't get ASS LAUGHED OFF?

You can quote the dictionary all you want, but socially and historically speaking, whores are always women. So STFU.

[blinks] That's true, but I've gotten away with calling men whores. And bitches. And...you get the point. It's even more amusing because I'm 5'5" and the guys I usually call whores are 6'+ and could chew me up and spit me out. So yeah.

In the beginning, yeah. I'd end up with bruises from getting the shit knocked out of me. After a while, it became kind of like a standard greeting.

"Bitch"; "Whore", "Asswipe"; "Fuckstick". That sort of thing.
