Petbulls mess
[info]jjgbabygirl posts about how her dog had mange and she had to put it down.

Community members stomp her.

Insert abortion stance posturing, multiple cries of 'get your dog fixed', accusations of trolling, clamoring that the people attacking the OP should be ashamed of themselves, and finally an "I'm leaving the community, you meanies!" post. It's at over a hundred replies and counting.

(reposted because I can't type)

Damn. I'm a hardcore supporter of spaying and neutering, but I feel sorry for this lady. Talk about jumping down someone's throat, especially after losing a beloved pet apparently because several vets misinformed her! If I ever put down one of my kitties on a vet's advice and then found out it wasn't fatal, I'd be a wreck.

Yeah, if I was given that kind of advice for any of my critters only to find out that it was wrong advice, someone would probably end up losing a limb. However, reading further in shows that the OP rejects all information that goes against what the vets told her and let her dog become an unfixed hairless bleeding ball of sores and pus before finally taking it to another vet.

Vets can be stupid
[info]platedlizard

I worked at one place last year that was breeding endangered geese for release. This was in Hawaii on Maui, which has a problem with avian malaria. Geese can carry malaria and not get sick, so they had to quarintine all geese that were going to other islands for it and run several bloodtests to make sure they didn't have it.

They used a couple of local vets, because drawing blood wasn't exactly a skilled job and they didn't want to haul in the program's avian vet from San Deigo out to do routine blood work.

These geese were rather timid, and wouldn't leave their carriers voluntarily. So the vets in question *dumped one* onto the concrete floor of the mosquito quarintine barn instead of simply reaching inside the carrier and hauling the goose out. Surprise surpise, the goose broke a leg. Then the vets tried to blame the *program staff* for the break (which they said occured during capture), which is a very serious charge. Only problem with that little theory is that paticular type of break only happens when the goose steps down and twists their leg (from, say being dumped out of a crate), not from flying into a wall.

I still can't believe how dumb they were. You don't dump an animal out of a carrier onto a concrete floor. You just don't.

And that's not even going into the vet that wanted to do a $300 bloodtest on plucking parakeet I had, that later died because he had a roundworm infection. The vet wanted to do the bloodtest, but didn't even bother to do a $20 fecal first. (and I was too cowardly to SPEAK UP and demand one, sadly) At best the bloodtest would have shown elevated whiteblood cells. My normal vet, who was on vacation at the time or I would have gone to her, was flabergasted that the other vet didn't do a fecal.

So yes, there are a lot of bad vets out there.

I stayed on a farm where one of the dogs was on its 'last chance' treatment for some type of mange, with the next step being to have it put down. Despite repeated vet visits, and various different treatments, the mange was just chronically unresponsive. So I guess sometimes there is no other option.

In one of James Herriot's books, he recounts having to put a dog down because it had really bad mange. The dog's name was Amber. And it's been ten years since I read those books.

Damn, dude, she's not a vet, she has no choice but to listen to the vet. It's not her fault if he's wrong.

And if she's going to keep the puppies, what the fuck is the problem?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]randomsome1

There's apparently two possibilities for the mange - one's caused by a hereditary condition. The puppies are theoretically by the dog that just got put down - but then again, the OP isn't sure. See: irresponsible breeding. Plus there's that entire bit about how a majority of people on the community rescue dogs from shelters and apply to the 'don't breed or buy while shelter dogs die' aphorism. Long story short, this pushed a whole lot of buttons.

Yeah...but, like one poster said, if you had a strange condition that was misdiagnosed and somebody said it was terminal, wouldn't you, oh, educate yourself? It sucks that she lost her dog, but her biggest excuse seems to be ignorance, and I'm not sure I can muster a whole lot of sympathy for that.

I wish the people in that community had refrained from jumping down her throat, but she really did seem to have her tin hat firmly strapped on.

I got the impression that Titan was really ill from the mites and having gone to a dumbass vet, the problem was just getting worse, and it'd be better to euthanize him, but she didn't want to. She mentioned somewhere that the vet who did it didn't really give her a choice.

Thanks, that was just what I was wondering. I guess things need to be fully concious for killing them to be o.k., you know, so they can really know what they're missing.

Or maybe it's because puppies are CUTE! And killing cute things is immoral. It's true, it's in the bible...

My mom and I foster cats for the local animal shelter. Sometimes we foster mama cats, one of whom was taken in when she was only a little bit pregnant, and I asked why they didn't just go ahead and spay her anyway.* The shelter lady looked at me like I was ev0l and asked me if I was willing to do it. Well, no, lady, I'm not a vet. Although I think my use of the words "kitty abortion" may also have ticked her off. Anyway, the kittens were born in my bedroom and were utter loves, but I still think the shelters should nip things in the bud, so to speak, when they get the chance.

*My feelings on this are assuming that the risks to mama cat of being spayed while pregnant are not greater than the risks of giving birth. Again, I'm not a vet!

One of my parent's cats was pregnant when they got her spayed. In fact they spayed her when they found out she was pregnant. From what I understand the incision was just a bit bigger then it would be normally.

I can see where it might be better to let a full term pregnant cat give birth, because then the incision would be HUGE and probably riskier then letting her give birth*, but there's no reason not to abort early on.

*I am not a vet and might be wrong on this

I believe it is more dangerous to spay a cat when it's pregnant or in heat, because the organs are enlarged and have a greater blood flow. Whether it's more dangerous than giving birth, I can't say, but presumably a normal birth without complications is notably less dangerous than any kind of major surgery.

Unfortunately, that tends to be true, though I know at least one owner who is very down to earth.

Sadly, she tends to get the shit flamed out of her on pitbull forums for suggesting basic dog care, so go figure.

People are so fucking stupid about animals anyway.

Am I the only one wondering how this girl is going to manage her three surviving dogs, a litter of eight or so puppies, and a newborn baby? That's a shitstorm in a bottle, there.

I feel sorry for her and think the community members could have backed off once they saw she wasn't listening, but she seriously doesn't strike me as a good decision-maker.
