Tiny lj_maintenance drama
Brad Fitz posts to lj_maintenance to inform AOL users why they're not receiving comments.

There are over 300 comments. Most of them are about how much AOL sucks or to inform Brad that other email services have the same problem, but there are a few gems in there. You've got AOL makes you gay on page one. Page two brings pigeonhed complaining about... something. It's not clear what he's angry about but whatever it is, it's definitely lj's fault. Page three brings us iwanttobeasleep who says That's what they get for using AOL. I have no pity for them. Ouch! Talk about a heart of ice! Alice23Kate on page four doesn't like people disagreeing with her, or calling her a comment whore, except that no one did. Plummet2misery throws in a random "you suck... i think your weird/racist too". Page five is drama free right now, but give it time.

See, now, if it had said "connecting to gheyness" then that would've been a different story.

Still so bitter. So very, very bitter.

Oh, yeah. that. Meh. I figured things would be fine once they got settled, and if they weren't I'd drop the sysadmin a line then. I swear, some people think servers are these magic boxes that always run perfectly and dont have to be confugured and what-all. Me, I was expecting LJ to be down for the better part of a day, so I'm [pretty satisfied with how smoothly it went.

If I was paying for this shit I would be hauling you through the courts for refunds.

Wow, this person needs to unclench.

What makes it all the funnier is that in the past, when LJ *has* been out of action for a prolonged period, they've been extremely good about giving extra time to paying users as compensation.

But I'll bet you didn't know AOL made you gay! I don't know what happens if you use AOL and you're already gay, though. Does it make you extra gay? Do you end up straight? These are important questions!

Well, I'm not feeling any more manlier today than yesterday and I don't have a sudden urge to worship teh cock, so no. Too bad; I could've had an orgy with all those straight girls that pinged me to cyber and logged off when I said I was a girl.

Hell, I'm wondering what it makes you if you work for AOL.

And yes, I do work for them in Tech.

Say what negative you can about them, but Sweet Zombie Jesus, they really treat thier employees incredibly well and as far as the software goes, as much as we wish there were more computer savvy people out there, the sad fact is there's more folks out there who just want that 'Intarweb' and to grasp the basics is beyond them so they need software that's going to make things so they comprehend it.

So, speaking as an insider, it wouldn't've taken much for the lj_maintenance people to email the AOL postmaster in advance to let them know about a move and get it all fixed once they had the new IP address.

Hey, an AOL Tech person!

I have a virtually computer-illiterate friend [1] who uses AOL. Her mail crashed and died and she lost years of correspondance. She was completely distraught, because it included mails she'd been sent by a close friend before her death which she didn't have saved anywhere else. The AOL help desk people were *amazing*, and did some techie magic, combined with walking her step-by-step through everything she needed to do to recover it. So from what I've heard from her, you rock.

[1] I once had tremendous problems getting some text documents to her in self-extracting zip format. Turned out that when I said 'find the file in Windows Explorer and double-click on it' she was actually trying to extract the files by opening the zip in Word Perfect.

Pretty much we'll do all we can to solve the problem and in the rare cases we can't, since we know there's a lot of 'passing the buck' going on with getting bounced around when they call some places, we'll make sure they've got the right info to tell who they have to go next to get that end fixed.

I've done tech support before AOL, and the company really does care about it's customers.

I only wish AOL's billing department was as caring and friendly as you say the tech support is- they kept charging us for almost a year after we quit, and we had to threaten them with mentions of our state's class-action lawsuit against them before they finally stopped trying to make us pay for services we were no longer receiving.

On the other hand, the tech support really DOES sound better than the awkward runaround I had with Dell when my CPU curled up and died of heatstroke this summer thanks to a defective fan part.

What's funnier than that is that in the case of yahoo, you really aren't losing your comments. They just get rerouted to your spam or bulk folder and since you don't know, you delete them yourself.

I use yahoo & haven't noticed this and I do check my Bulk-folder. So unless Yahoo marks them as such spam that it doesn't get through ANY filters, they just haven't arrived.

Word to pigeonhed. I usually get disproportionally pissed off when free services I make frequent use of don't run 100% perfectly smoothly too. Also, I completely agree that cussing at the techs is the best way to encourage them to fix any unanticipated problems that might arise. Good show.

The only thing that bugs me is the slow loading time, but they should work that out soon. If not, then I have to question the competence of their team, but not just yet, as they're bound to have SOME issues. When it's still doing that a few weeks/months down the road, then yeah....I'll be wanking along with the rest of 'em.

That said, I dont get notifications, so I don't miss 'em. I turned 'em off cuz I was getting too many and I don't like that. I'm no longer a slave to my email. *hurrah* *is a recovering email addict*
