Be the turkey. Gobble-gobble.
Thanksgiving Wank at [info]metaquotes.

I'd summarize it, but let's just say it's "historical reality" v. "I just want to give THANKS with my family and eat -- FUCK YOUR HISTORY!" with a bonus clairvoyant thread.

So, wait.

Is it just the whites that can't celebrate Thanksgiving because they're evil, or is it everyone?

White people need to stop embarassing me right the fuck now. If the pointing out of the genocide of nearly an entire fucking race of people ruins your precious digestion, suck it up and pass on the second slice of pie. Because it really happened and it sucked a lot worse for the people it happened to than for you.

Damn. Yet another Thanksgiving comes and goes without me remembering to give thanks for the fact that my white ancestors left enough of my Cherokee ancestors alive to help produce me and my guiltless Thanksgiving celebratin' ass.

On the other hand, we always have the perpetually-gravid sorts to whine about all of it. I especially enjoy the annual "Cherubs arrow-raped innocent pagans to create Valentine's Day" rants. Those are beautiful.

Ya know... I read some of it, and the quoted post did come across as a bit on the "Bad white people! bad!" side.

But really?

I'm too stuffed with turkey and pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes and gravy to get worked up about it.

Almost all holidays/gestivites lose their meaning and historical reference over time. It happens.

But meh. The turkey has gone to my brain and I will now go sleep off an excellent feast.

Well, I definitely appreciated the history lesson. Am I a freak for feeling that it added to my holiday rather than detracted? It's a day for giving thanks for what you have and contemplating what has been. Cripes.

Also it's great to finally get a straight lesson on Thanksgiving. The public school system didn't get anywhere close to this in all its 12 years of my life.

I'm kind of surprised at the notion that an American might not know about Tisquanto and everything the poor man went through. I distinctly remember a unit about him in third grade, and another in fifth which expanded the topic into discussing the genocide of native peoples at some length - "genocide" was a vocabulary word and everything. Did I go to an unusually proactive school or something?

That being said, I read kimonthejourney's post with bated breath waiting for the Nazi reference, and lo! she did not fail me. Oh, Godwin, you poor poor bastard.

Sheesh. Yeah, I don't believe I'm guilty for my forefathers' mistakes either, but what she's saying is totally true; the United States was built on slavery and genocide, and we need to know it. These things don't just become unimportant because they're in the past. A book that gives us myths in place of truth and primary sources has no business calling itself a history book.

I'd like to toss in my vote for changing it to Turkey Day. And giving it a set date, for cryin' out loud.

Trouble is, nobody said that.

Oh, man. I just read the ranting post, not the comments, and already I'm thinking that it's cool to call bullshit on "charter myths," but the ranter also needs to check on her myths as well.

She references the "Indian Way," for Christ's sake. Yes, because everyone who lived in the land that would become America before the arrival of "the white man" (she uses that oudated phrase--"the white man") were one people with one culture and one "Way."

The Indians who decided to help out the Pilgrims weren't sweetly overcoming the horrible experience they'd already had with Europeans out of the goodness of their hearts; they were shrewdly looking for a potential political alliance for protection against enemy tribes.

It should be impossible for a thinking person to deny that people originating from Europe for centuries completely screwed over people originating from the Americas. But it seems idiotic to me to say that's because the "Indian Way" keeps the people originating in the Americas from being as duplicitous as whitey.

The ability to be that duplicitous and do so much damange comes from being in a position of power, plain and simple. The Indians didn't get the same chances to be such assholes because, as soon as Europeans showed up, diseases so thoroughly devastated the diverse and flourishing cultures and civilizations throughout the Americas. A lot of the Indians who were left had to hope new alliances with new people could keep them going, since they no longer had the power of flourishing civilizations or cultures behind them. That's what made them vulnerable to people who did have still-strong or growing power behind them, not the sweet, trusting nature of "the Indian Way."

I mean, basically, the way the ranter is describing Tisquantum is in line with the "Noble Savage," except here it's just more like the "Noble Victim" or somesuch.

Found the elusive "statements" wank
[info]doomsday
2005-11-25 01:45 pm UTC (link)
Let's try that again, with HTML skillz:

I got bored and searched through statements and found what kimonthejourney was referring to between herself and amandathegreat. Sometimes the wank doesn't come easily, but then it spooges all over the place... or something like that.

Looks like amandathegreat is in forunlafulck's circle jerk posse along with burism, cerulgalactus, and killhamster (forunlawfulck's e-boyfriend), and kimonthejourney is tight with zaphod_groupie and emjay (or at least they all hate forunlawfulck's posse). Burism doesn't like zaphod_groupie, zaphod_groupie doesn't like cerulgalactus, cerulgalactus doesn't like emjay, emjay doesn't like forunlawfulck, forunlawfulck doesn't like kimonthejourney, and kimonthejourney really fucking doesn't like killhamster or amandathegreat. I think.

There are comparisons to cockroaches and Jabba the Hutt, debates over the relevance of age, many comments about hair dye, suggestions to buy Hooked on Phonics, scrolling "LOL's," and obscene abuses of capslock.

Macro fight!
Call for a cage match between forunlawfulck and kimonthejourney.

Jesus Christ, this could be its own wank. Plus, the community is like forunlawfulck's personal dating service, but although hers and her boyfriend's "e-lationship" posts are funny, they aren't very wanky. *Sad face*

Aside from the part where Bastmoon? Kept using the Jennyo Question Marks of Moronity? And that? Way annoying.

I really really loved the part where one of Min's friends was directing people to read her journal, or better yet, her fanfic to understand what she was *really* saying. So, I clicked the link to the recommended fic and found this:

For two weeks after he'd moved out of Jean's room, he'd cried himself to sleep at night and jacked off in the shower in the morning.

OMG SUDDENLY THE MEANING OF THANKSGIVING IS CLEAR!

As someone of both white and Cherokee heritage (and some choctaw - we think) I have to say that I am perfectly aware that the white man screwed the red man over good. Unfortunately, my quota of mental abnormalities is already way overdrawn, and I cannot afford to include schizophrenia just so part of me can feel guilty at the other part, who is still nursing a grudge. Instead, I enjoy the irony along with the pie and turkey.

So she's half Native American, but refers to herself as Indian... Silly me, I thought Indians came from India!

Yeah, yeah, colloquialism, geographically incorrect and playing into the oppressorz clutches ZOMG!, whatever.

I'm just wondering why you think it's OK for a celebration to be so removed from it's origins?

Maybe it's just me, but aren't most holidays separated from their origins? Especially the major ones -- Easter, Christmas, Hallowe'en?

Y'know, I actually managed to come across this while it was still fresh on the burner. Know what I did? Sat back, had a Diet Cherry Coke, went out, smoked a cigarette, and waited. Just waited for it to esSPLOOGE all OVER the place.

And I wasn't wrong. It's nice to be right every once in a while.

Though I must admit, after reading all of the comments, my head's still spinning a bit.
