Wow.

Every time I feel really dumb about something, all I need to is look to thebitingfaery and - and meanspirited as it is I feel better somehow.

Also, biting has apparently confused copyright and trademark or something. She != a logo used for illicit, scurrilous or subversive purposes.

Furthermore, unless rusk was making a profit off her photo-which-is-not-free-for-use...um. S/he's being a nimrod (albeit sometimes a funny one!), but I don't think s/he is violating copyright law.

thebitingfaery, ljabuse is like the goggles. They do nothing. Telling them someone gaffled your icon isn't going to get you anywhere really.

	"Spastic" was also used as a term for epileptics. Which is why, when diagnosed with epilepsy, a part of me was thrilled because I love and sound and descriptiveness of that word outside of its "ablist" (barf) connotations and I finally get to reclaim it as a general insult. 	As much as I love someone biting into thebitingfaery, I have to say I don't think it's so HEINOUS OMGZ! that she didn't know spaz/spastic/etc is an insult to people with CP. Hell, I didn't know it until I started researching my condition. I don't think the term is very common anymore. Anyway, that bit with the icons was awesome. rusk__ is my hero now. I think it depends where you are, mate. I mean, I'm not that old and kids still sang the spastic song at us on the way to the hospital school. And chanted spaz spaz spaz etc. I'm talking 1998, about when the Spastics Society changed its name to SCOPE. So yeah, when you lot say spaz all casual like, my fisties! they clench!

I think in the US (and probably Canada as well), "spastic/spaz" has long been used an insult for anyone who behaves in a certain flaky, clumsy way, and a lot of people would be surprised to hear the insult can be associated with genuine physical/mental conditions/disabilities.

I was listening to the DVD-commentary on NewsRadio episodes recently, and the actors and writers who were commenting were both American and Canadian, and they mentioned how the show had had a lot of instances of characters calling one character a spaz, until a CP-advocacy group or someone contacted them and asked them to stop. They hadn't known about the insult's origins. (They did also manage to use the insult to great comedic effect before they stopped, too. If you know NewsRadio, and know the character Matthew, you'll probably understand me when I say I'm not sure what insult would fit him better than "spaz.")

I think in Britain, "spastic" and insults derived from it remained connected in people's minds with spastic medical conditions, and the people who choose to use it as insult just don't feel concerned about insulting a whole group of innocent people along with the specific person they want to offend.

It's probably like using the insults "moron/idiot/imbecile" vs "retard." Moron, idiot, and imbecile used to be scientific terms for mental retardation, but now people use them with their PC-ness intact because that association has drifted away. "Retarded" though, is still supposed to be a word that can be used in a neutral sense for people who don't necessarily deserve to be insulted, so it's not cool to use it as an insult.

(Seriously, though. What *are* you supposed to call Matthew if not a spaz?)
