ROCK! Is deader than dead!
Posting here because it's just not quite fandomy enough.

A little exercise in music snobbery: Over on [info]audiography, [info]eye_static posts some MP3s that are supposed to be post-punk. [info]ontheqt, peeking out from under the bridge, objects. Because rock bands have shitty names nowadays. [info]eye_static objects back, and then it transpires that "access to all styles makes music a gigantic disgusting melting pot." Like bad fondue.

Tiny, yet intriguing.

Music Snob Hat ON!

None of those bands are post-punk. Post-punk existed in the early 80s and was characterized by bands like Gang of Four and Joy Division. This person is trying to make up their own definition of post-punk: "shit that's influenced by 90s pop-punk and came after it." No, and in fact, you are the weakest link, goodbye.

Don't even get me started on emo. Evanescence and Linkin Park are not emo. Emo is not just sad rock.

Thank you for saying what I was thinking.

Jesus Christ, I love PJ Harvey too, but she's not a post-punk artist. Damn kids with their music.

I know.
I was total scenester before I made the transition to internet fangirl. The only good thing about it is that sometimes I can totally call people on their "I know nothing everything about music" bullshit.

Yeah, but the problem with the word "emo" is that it's strayed from what it used to mean. It's come to define a subpopulation of hipster culture, with references to non-emo bands, clothing styles, makeup, etc., and that's not it. Real emo music =/= pseudo-intellectual hipsters, but that's the connection that's been forged, so help us, Oberst.

Though anyone who thinks Linkin Park is emo needs a swift kick to the head. I mean ... how the fuck do you wind up with that result? Seriously.

When I first learned what emo was, my friend told me that emo was short for emotional, so I assumed that angsty rock was emo by definition, and Linkin Park fits that. It's not that unreasonable, even if it's wrong. In fact, I still don't know what the hell emo is, but I know I like this icon.

It's jusy really weird that it went from an obscure musical genre (I bet 1 in 100 people who use the word could name some actual emo bands) to a word people throw around on the internet without really knowing what it means.

I mean, seriously, the emo scene was fucking MINISCULE when it existed. Most people only know about it because of all the "Cheer Up Emo Kid" anti-emo stuff that inexplicably became very popular. The phenomenon of making fun of emo is way, way more popular than emo ever was.

P.S. Your icon is hilarious.

Hmm, okay. So what makes an emo band emo? It doesn't seem to be the lyrics, since not everyone with angsty lyrics qualifies. Is it a certain sort of drum riff, or a certain kind of chord combination? Is it about instrumentation?

Sorry for asking all these questions, I'm a bit of a music whore...

no prob! It's guitar style, song structure, vocals, and other stuff. This website is probably the best emo reference online.

The first ever emo band was Rites of Spring, which was formed by Ian Mackaye (of Minor Threat and Fugazi fame). The Washington, DC scene spawned a bunch of similar-sounding bands. The music was raw, screamy, and emotional. Sometimes people would cry on stage while they were singing, and hence the term was born. The genre started out being really heavy and screamy, but became more poppy with bands like Jimmy Eat World. I urge you to check out that site, though. They know what the hell they're talking about. :)

well, I've grown used to the transition fron Mineral, Cap'n Jazz, and The Promise Ring to like, Good Charlotte or whatever. But Linkin Park.. yeah, just NO.

So, since you seem to have some idea of strange music styles I don't know... can you tell me wtf nu-metal is? I don't listen to it (I think) but I hear people wank about how Dir en grey is nu-metal and that, apparantly, sucks.

I don't really listen to metal these days, but back when I did (early to mid 90s), nu metal was like, more alternative-y (more power chords, less crazy guitar solos, more growly screamy vocals and less singing) and different than metal from the 80s (e.g. Metallica, Iron Maiden). Korn and the Deftones were nu metal.

"access to all styles makes music a gigantic disgusting melting pot"

I could make a long overwrought post about how access to other styles and traditions is what causes innovation and is the true source of most of the good music in the world, but instead I'll just point and laugh.

Aww, I was hoping for a "They're/you're not REAL punks" digression. Because people who know REAL punks (or any non-pop genre) can generate wank like whoa. But I'm one of those who intentionally mislabels music to make the snobs flail and spit.

Ah, that would explain some of the genres that my iTunes spits up from time to time... like whoever labeled the Tales from the Crypt theme as "blues".

every time atdi gets mentioned, I have to pop up and mention that they're from my hometown and I'm friends with a girl who's cousins with one of the guys in the band. no, I don't know which one. I think he was one of the ones that was also in sparta, though.
