In the [info]wtf_inc community, [info]incorrigible_ posts a story involving a hunter.

[info]glooms feels the need to reply with:
Well what can you expect out of someone who would murder an innocent animal.
.

Everything goes downhill from there, of course.

I used to be a hunter,
Stalked wild game
Killing birds and beasties
Felt no shame.

Then one day while hunting,
I shot a doe
Shot right through the forehead,
How was I to know...?

I shot Bambi's mother
Now I feel so bad
I shot Bambi's mother
I made Bambi sad.

And now the deer all hate me
Thumper too.
Greenpeace now berates me
And Disney plans to sue

O-oh-woh-oh, I'm so sorry,
That's she's dead,
When I think I could have shot
A Care Bear instead.

glooms' response to How is it any more wrong for a human to consume a pig than a wolf to do the same?:

Well, a human can actively tell right from wrong.

WTF? Right and wrong has nothing to do with it! Eating animals has always been essential for survival, especially back before dietary supplements for vegetarians and tofurky and whatnot. It's why we have canine teeth, people! To tear through flesh!

And a gut that can digest it, too. We are omnivores! Opportunists! If we can pick it, grow it, club it, snare it, or liberate it, we'll eat it!

Eating animals has always been essential for survival

Well, it's not essential for survival now, so that's really not a good argument. The mere fact that something was necessary in the past is not an adequate justification for continuing it. Wolves can't survive without killing, humans can. A wolf is not in a position to make a choice, a human is.

It's why we have canine teeth, people! To tear through flesh!

Yes, and? Doesn't mean we have to use them to tear through flesh. Just because something is natural that doesn't automatically make it a desirable state of affairs. Sorry but the natrualistic fallacy always being trotted out in these discussions makes me twitch way more than wanky vegetarians making my side look crazy. [/wank]

I've been a vegetarian for 3 years. You know who annoys me most when it comes to the vegetarian debate? It's not meat-eaters. It's not even hunters (hell, I'd have to stop speaking to my father if that were the case). It's "OMG u murdred teh cute fluffy bunnys!!1!one!" vegetarians. PLEASE, [info]glooms, stop being on my side. Go back to your PETA rally, because you're making the rest of us look like idiots.

Animals would die of over population? there are plenty of species that arent hunted that are not over populated. trust me, nature balances things out.

Nature balances things out through 1)predators and 2)starvation. Prey animal population gets too large? Whatever eats them has a good year or five years or whatever, and grows because there's a good food supply. If that isn't enough, they'll starve and that'll kill off more of them. Their population dwindles, while the predator population increases. In the next bit, the predator population is too large to be supported by the now-smaller prey population, and some of them die out through starvation. Fewer predators means the prey population has a chance to grow again... And so on.

Nature's fun!

Ugh, hunting wank. Spare me.

I wish well-meaning folks like this would think a little more about quality of life for food animals and wild animals and be a little less knee-jerky OMG DUN KILL THUMPER!!11@! whenever this debate comes up. I eat meat, sure. I try to eat free-range, organically raised meat (venison's great for this! doesn't get more free-range than that), slaughtered humanely and locally, whenever I can. It's dead, it doesn't care if I eat it or not; my conscience just needs to know it had the best possible life before it ended. I also assist in abused horse and dog rescue facilities and have rescued a horse myself, so, no, I'm not an animal hater.

Meat is good for humans. *shrug* It's also quite cheap and nutritious, and it tastes good. I see no moral issue with eating it, as long as the animal wasn't abused or terrorized during its life (something we've got a ways to go on). And if the animal was wild? Then even better, it was living as nature intended before it was killed by a predator and eaten. :)

sorry. I'll clean up the mess, I swear...

I'm not a big fan of hunting, but how can you own a cat if you flip out like this? Feel free to contradict me, but aren't human hunters more likely to eat what they kill than someone's pet cat?

And at least the human's not going to leave a slightly disemboweled deer on the front porch to show their family they love them. Or puke on the rug because they tried to eat squirrel guts.
