Academic wank....
take from mousie on [info]wank_report

It's been a while since we've had some good old-fashioned academic wank about stuff most people neither understand nor would care about if they did understand. And this academic wank involves Michel Foucault,Mr. BDSM himself, and academic feminism, which is always fun.

On academics_anon LJ community, marlowe1 has an important message: he took a stand on poorly-constructed dystopias. Also, he doesn't like Foucault, academic pretension, misapplied lit crit, or certain aspects of radical feminist theory.

Reaction is swift and brutal. Assuming, of course, you consider having to listen to whining grad students to be "brutality." Godwin's gets to play in short order, and marlowe1 has a thoroughly wanky romp through the collective offended sensibilities of the academics. Wankery all around, plus lots of accusations of "you study the wrong language" and "I misunderstand better than you misunderstand."

There is a follow-up where marlowe1 explains his position on the various feminist doctrines (not all five-thousand and pedantry of them, of course) and the population, having gotten righteous indignation out of the way last time, tries for dismissive self-satisfaction.

(Sorry about the brevity and lack of quotage...life and duty call, I must answer, and they won't take "go the fuck away" as an acceptable reply anymore.)

ANYHOW - not only did my professor LIKE the paper (it's rare that a professor likes a paper where you are writing about why his assigned reading is offal - but then again that's what marks a good professor vs. an indocrinating [sic] motherfucker in my mind) but he suggested that I delve into it a little further and submit it to a Peer Review Journal.

As much as his hatred of Mary Daley fills me with sympathy, the ever-so-coy "oh goodness! me? what a surprise!" bits are fairly sickening, aren't they?

Yes, marlowe1, do, do submit it to a peer-reviewed journal: if anyone deserves the insights of their peers, you do. In fact, I hope a panel of your exact equivalents can be convened, and you get to spend eternity in their company.

I REALLY don't care if he supposedly wrote that post at 3 AM, it still doesn't bode well for his writing in general. I could write better than that when both drunk AND tired. Is there a jurimprudence law about acting snooty-faux-intellectual when you can barely type?

Oh, sigh. I have marlowe1 friended, as he's the mod of weirdjews2 (and he friended me), and yes, he's always a wanker. It's very very sad, on the whole...

Is it okay to just not like Foucault? Does that make me hopelessly déclassé, or am I cutting edge?

It's not a misspelling. It's a satirical commentary on the state of modern literary analysis.

I think it actually makes you a better person. It's like a check-list:

1) Helps the downtrodden...check
2) Cares about justice...check
3) Tries to live without anger...check
4) Dislikes Foucault and his faux-intellectual musings on things he's obviously never actually spent much time researching....big-assed check.

Woot! A good person! Plus, he's an "institution" now, so it makes you a rebel against the strictures imposed by the Man.

Well [info]marlowe1, everyone knows that petulantly and repeatedly misspelling the name of the person you're criticizing is the hallmark of the most reasoned and mature scholarly debate. You've excelled on that score. Good job! Oh, and edgiest user info evar, dude.

Since most Fuckoult proponents have not read him in the original French either, one can assume that they have approximating his concepts and syntax. And one cannot learn every language in the world.

Do try to finish learning English some day. Then people might take you a little more seriously when you bitch about anything learning other languages.

How about the fact that I DO understand Fuckault and I find his arguments juvenile and puerile.

Oh, aren't you just the cutest, most self-aware thing!

My college debate coach was a Foucault-worshipper with more degrees in Philosophy than one can shake a stick at. And he didn't shake a stick, he beat us with it until we loved Foucault as much as he did.

Oh, fuck no. Not HIM again!

He wreaked some havoc a while back for completely rewriting vigorously editing a friend's contribution to his fiction anthology, causing Friend to withdraw his story. He has been haunting Friend's LJ ever since, randomly leaving creepy insulting comments.

This is punishment for Friend throwing away his shot at the glory and fame publication in a book called "Teddy Bear Picnic Massacre" could have brought. Woe.

At one point, he was trying to get a story by gomichan@lj published in a collection, but Artistic Differences (as in, the difference between a writer and a critic) intervened.

As a result, one periodically sees hilarious wank on her journal involving him. Not fake wank with multiple participants, no; pure solo wank.

Harold Bloom isn't so bad. He at least has the benefit of being better-read and more rigorously logical than virtually any other literary theorist since T.S. Eliot himself.

Alan Bloom, on the other hand....

Ultimately one must trust that the translators are getting the basic ideas through. Since most Fuckoult proponents have not read him in the original French either, one can assume that they have approximating his concepts and syntax.

And one cannot learn every language in the world.

...

I can't decide whether to laugh at him, since with that attitude he's never going ANYWHERE in academia, sputter furiously at his idiotic pretensions about philosophy in translation, or just go look for porn to wipe this memory away.
