Christmas lights = communist propaganda?
It all starts with a video of a really cool Christmas lights display. There's a few comments about what it must be like to be the neighbours of said display's owners (earliest comments are at the bottom of the page). So far, so non-wanky. That is, until PBRsailor breaks out the CAPSLOCK of EMPHASIS when he objects to the use of the CND symbol on the grounds that it symbolises COWARDICE in the face of the VIETNAM War. All HELL breaks LOOSE.

My personal favourite comment is the entirely non-wanky I'm 60 years old and this is AWESOME and the music is GREAT! What a terrific job. If my husband was younger, he would do this, lol..

ETA Hee! I love the fact that out of 31 comments to this post, only about three are about crazy Vietnam dude!

I want to grow up to be the people who made that display.

If only because it must bug the shit out of the neighbors. =D

Apparently the music is played over a radio frequency so you can only hear it if you're tuned in. (Although I guess the lights alone would still be pretty annoying.)

...It worries me that I know this off the top of my head.

Everytime I see this xmas light thing, I have this unshakable idea that the guy who did it must look like Yanni.

It's a peace sign, for you know, peace on Earth. I doubt the guy thought of any social ramifications of using it in the display. He probably just cleaned out the local Walmart and that was the only decoration they had left, and he really needed something to go along with the harpsichord or whatever.

My favorite comment is "Perhaps we can let go and just enjoy the artistry. WWJD??" because that argument against Christian radicals will always be funny.

I'm preferable to If this person were my neighbor, I would blackjack him, drag him to the street and curbstomp him until he begged for death through a tootless and bloody maw.. then I would fulfill his request. Since he is not my neighbor, I think it's neat.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how it would bother the neighbors that much, unless the music is playing AT the house. Surely it doesn't all the time. And the lights wouldn't be a big deal at all; I've had neighbors with flashing Christmas lights before. Shut the blinds and it goes away. We're not talking Chevy Chase-level brilliance here. :-)

Anyway. Yeah. That designer wins at life.

As I understand it, the music is actually broadcast on a limited-frequency radio channel, so if you're across the street watching the lights you can tune into it on your car stereo. The neighbors never hear it unless they're also tuned in.

The music is audible through a specific radio station. it's like an oldsk00l drivein movie. Tune to 98.foo, and get the moozik.

It runs from 6-10 pm and the computer engineer that lives there said if anyone complained, he would shut it off.

If the article I got linked to (sorry, I don't know where it is) is any indication, it got shut off because of traffic concerns.

That is, because there were ten thousand people lined up to see the shiny. :D

Man, and here I thought it would be one of those CAPalert-esque "The Peace Sign isn't CHRISTIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!" types.

I wonder what these people do when they see little girls draw them all over their pencil bags. Along with hearts and flowers and other easy-to-draw things ...

Sometimes, I'm a little sad that, until the day I die, I will always hear that "Trading Spouses" woman's voice anytime anyone anywhere posts the word "CHRISTIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!"

From Snopes:

So that the Williams' neighbors aren't disturbed by constant noise, viewers driving by the house are informed by signs to tune in to a signal broadcast over a low-power FM radio station to hear the musical accompaniment.

Now will everybody shut up about it?

And when traffic got too bad, the cops called him and said "Can you shut it down?" and he said, "OK." I really would be okay living next door to this guy. I've lived next to worse.
