straight pride!
Even the [info]gaystr8alliance has its kerfuffles now and then.

[info]zlyoga starts the engines with a post advertising her new [info]heteropride community.

It seemed like Straight people needed a pride community too.

Straight pride dosn't inhearently mean homophobia. In fact homophobia will not be tolerated at all in this community.

Straight people have just as much of a right to be proud of who they are as Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual people do

This community is for straight people, family of straight people and allies of straight people.
Community members respond to say "O, rly?" Many are confused on rather it is for serious or not. The fact [info]zlyoga is a queer is a bit of a red herring.

Some highlights
Heteros need their loving, too!
Community cat-fight
Semantics
To delete, or not to delete? Who is the pussy?

[info]durancureboy: "next they're gonna plan a parade!"
[info]durancureboy: hetero pride? what's there to be proud of? being majority? fuck that, being a minority is SO much cooler.
[info]thetimecamel: that's goofy.
[info]nyctus: Every GSA meeting I attend at BVT from now on I'm going to be reminded of you, this nasty response and how at one point there was such a close minded person sitting in my seat. It's not a good feeling.
[info]kattlady: I love you. Wanna have some not open minded, straight hating babies with me?
[info]kathryntgreat: My name is Kathryn, I am a caucasian female. I am 17 and i like the color yellow. my favorite classes are history italian and french. I sing non stop and i am a heterosexual person.

All you heterosexuals get back in your closets!

Not nearly inclusive enough, bubba! In retaliation, I'm going to set up a "human pride" comm. It'll be for humans, the pets of humans, and all alien supporters of humankind.

Why stop with gay pride vs het pride, or black pride vs white pride? So many possible divisions, it's not even funny. Disabled vs abled? Abled: "I'm zilchaplegic and proud of it! Why do the disabled get all the attention -- we should have our own Olympics, dammit!" Blonde pride vs brunette pride? (Hush, redheads, stop making a scene.) The blondes will march the streets, but the entire affair will stall out when they get stuck at a "Stop" sign and wait for days for a "Go" sign to pop up. The brunettes will march, but nobody will notice because they'll be off watching the pretty blondes mill around. Tall pride vs short pride? The short, fed up with the jokes, march on Washington until light rain showers cause flash puddling and they all drown. Meanwhile, the tall will hold their heads up with pride...and be decapicated by a passing zeppelin.

Okay, I've offended enough people for one day.

I wanted to start a tall pride group once because I couldn't see a single bad thing about being tall apart from... oh yeah... not being able to join short pride groups! I mean, even the best Doctor Who ever is notable for being 6'3" and VERY TALL INDEED. And the least good doctor? 5'6". Obvious correlation, I think... ;D

Whee.

How about just goddamn being proud of who you are as a person instead of being proud of one particular word that defines you?

I know, I sound too PC for all the drama-hounds. Aww.

The thing some people cheerfully fail to remember is that the whole "pride" thing is to do with pride being opposed to shame. What someone is saying with "gay pride" is simply that they're not ashamed to be gay. In cultures where people are so often made to feel shame for deviating from the sexual norms in any way, refusing to be ashamed can be a real help.

At least, this is how I understand the whole "pride" issue, and likewise the issue of "Black Pride" or "[nationality] Pride". It's about feeling good about yourself. Of course, some people will insist on taking it to extremes and holding a very dogmatic view of belonging to this and that group, excluding people who don't "measure up", ie people who are seen as being insufficiently proud. This isn't right, and these people also need to remember about the concepts of inclusion and abandoning shame.

I think that may have been wanky *changes trousers* My apologies.

*applauds*

Be proud of what you can do and what you have done, not what label you can stick on your ass.

Because in the long run, if someone's going to stick a label on your ass, they can look at all the people that that label is attached to who have done kickass things with their life and say, "Oh, I guess Group X isn't so bad..."

I remember we had a guy from some GLBT organization come talk to our class in school once. He made us fill out a "Straight Questionaire" that included questions like, "Do your family members know you're straight?" & "When did you first realize you were straight?".

That? Made sense. Brought up points, made people think.

This, however? Not so much.
