Fatphobic Bigot!
Over on LJ the fatshionista community is dedicated to, well if you couldn't tell fat fashion. There's some disagreement about the merits of a couple of items in a couple recent posts, but on the whole, not wanky.
Until a thin girl shows up. Some wonder what she's doing there, and accusations of fatphobia, bigotry, basic lack of logic, and inability to understand complex comments, they are a-slung. Then, the irate thin girl leaves with the parting shot: And from now on, I'm not even going to feel *sorry* for you!
As a direct result of this wankery herself_nyc has created a new community of her very own: fatshion_victim. The fatshionistas, they are not happy.

Fairly small, but diverting.

ETA: The fatshionista mod weighs in.
ETA2: Cause ruuger pointed out I didn't explain what they're even fighting about (oops...): The argument is over a black velvet skirt and a)whether or not it'll make the wearer look short and fat b)whether or not that's a bad thing and c)that's not what they OP asked, shutup you fatphobic jerks. herself_nyc kind of started it, in that hers is the first post in the thread, but the thin girl causing all the ruckus is temp_f.

Uh, could someone please tell me what exactly is going on there? Because my malnourished thin-girl brains do not compute who's fighting who and why. Of course, this may be because it's almost 8 a.m. and I'm still up after having spent the night reading Buffy fanfiction and I keep getting distracted by herself_nyc's Spike icons.

OP posts a picture of a skirt she just bought, and asks for suggestions for what top she should pair it with.

temp_f and herself_nyc (and others) take it upon themselves to save the OP from becoming a fashion victim (apparently they think the skirt will make her look stumpy and fat and bulky).

Others respond to point out that there's nothing wrong with looking short and fat if you are, in fact, short and fat. Yet others respond to tell the above two and their ilk to keep their negative opinions to themselves since the OP wasn't asking for critique.

The accusations of fatphobia fly since temp_f and herself_nyc are against fat people looking like fat people. I guess.

A girl who, by what she reports, is not particularly fat, tells a community dedicated to fat fashion that they should really try to look thinner and that liking round, short gals is some sort of manifestion of a psychological problem.

Members of the community, quite rightly, don't find this amusing or helpful or intelligent. The non-fat girl scorned goes and makes her own community so as to bitch (I presume).

Hee. I love when my mom buys my black clothes. "Black is a slimming color, dear." Um, ma, don't think my "little weight problem" (as she calls it) will be fixed with another black sweater that looks like it was made by Olaf the Tentmaker.

But hey, sometimes I like to dress up in all black and pretend I'm goth for a day.

It was a great day for me when I finally figured it out. "You'll look fat in that!" Yeah. I am fat. Wearing clothes that don't go anywhere near my body isn't fooling anybody. "Wow, I bet that's a really thin girl wearing a huge tent!"

Interesting note: when I started wearing all the clothes that I always thought I shouldn't wear, some that are even (gasp!) tight - my fat-phobic family kept going, "Have you lost weight? You look great."

Wow. 140 pounds. Life must be SO HARD being that fat!

Uh, if she was very short then yes she would be 'fat'. I'm technically considered overweight right now according to my doctor/BMI but you might not be able to tell if you looked at me.

Do you have to be a certain weight, regardless of height, before you can be fat?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]grand_sealink

To be considered obese, you need to have a BMI of 30 or greater. This would only be possible if she was shorter than 5'1". As she never states her weight in the thread, we can only guess how tall she is.

I think fat is more of a combination of social factors, as well as obesity. I have a BMI of somewhere around...37. I have to deal with cultural fallout from being fat, as well as the fact that my bones, while big (yes, I am "large-framed"), were never meant to take this kind of strain. Quite frankly, she would not have the health problems that a morbidly obese person would have. I live with a girl who is 5'1 and has a BMI of 35. She wears a size 16 and considerably more than temp_f's high weight.

I can't say I have any pity for her. At her heaviest, she probably wore a 16, which is the second-to-lowest size the Fat Store carries. 16s are also available in some other large retailers, which cannot be said of the larger sizes, like 20-28. Even 18 sizes are rare. If she could still wear clothes manufactured by Gap Inc. that were available in stores, (with the possible exception of Old Navy, even though they don't know how to make fat clothes), then I probably wouldn't call her fat.

I get not wanting to look fat. I get assuming that others won't want to look fat, and giving advice accordingly. But saying:

Some people might wonder why you find short, heavy women attractive -- whether it's the physical manifestation of the person's lack of control over their bodies, the perceived helplessness, or even the maternal connotations.

Just crosses the line into utter, crass stupidity. I don't normally get annoyed by what random people say, but bitch please. Fuck off and die, kthnx.

(venturing into tmi territory) I'm personally attracted to fat dykes. Just my thing. And it certainly has nothing to do with helplesness...jeez, nothing turns me on more than a big gal with confidence and power. As for the "maternal" thing, I got enough of the "you're just searching for a mommy shit from my ex ex-gay therapist. Not the Random Bitch's fault for hitting one of my sore spots, but holy fuck that pisses me off.

Wow, I've made a mess. /wank

...Is it wrong that my first thought was "Wait. How can you tell if someone is thin over the Internet?"

I want a sexuality dectector if weight dectectors exist. I have a couple of friends who practically function as queer dectectors, just because if they crush on a guy, that guy will without fail turn out to be gay, but what I want is a machine that'll prove I'm right when I tell them not to bother.

Umm, well, I don't find it sexy. I feel sexy when I feel powerful, secure, and intelligent. Appearing shorter and fatter than I am does not enhance others' reactions to me in those areas, nor does it enhance my own perception of myself as sexy.

And who died and made you the center of the universe?

Hello, there actually might be some large women who - gasp - LIKE the way they look and might not WANT to look thin at every moment so they will appease other people. SHOCK BLEEDING HORROR.

...the US is full of short, fat women, and no matter how they dress, they'll still be short and fat. But if they dress well, then perhaps the rest of the world will treat them better.

I think we're being a little too harsh on temp_f. Why just the other day, Croatia mercilessly beat me in the street because my clothes were making me look shorter and fatter than I normally am! If only I had known her secret to world peace! I could have avoided the harsh reprimand given to me by Spain.

BMI means shit. Aren't factors like body fat percentage, lung capacity and cholesterol far more fucking important?

I weight about 10kg more than my sister, and I'm still healthier and get hit on more. Skinny =/= pretty, especially if you choose to dress in clothes two sizes too small for you. One of my closest friends is a size eighteen and she always manages to look fantastic because - shock, horror! - she chooses clothes with a nice cut, flattering colour and quality material, as opposed to my sister, who looks like she raided Britney Spears' pregnancy wardrobe and doesn't put any effort into posture or presentation.

Dumb skinny girls who automatically assume they're hotter or better because they have less of a gravitational pull = do not win at life.
