I swear the adventure game scene has to be one of the wankiest ever.

Case in point: AudioSoldier, here at the Adventure Gamers forum, has decided that all fan-made games are lousy because anybody who could actually design good games are probably employed by now.

The discussion's fairly sedate, but that doesn't make the original idea presented any less wanky.

Or played any of the games during the Golden Age made by people living in their parents basement.

Very much like fanfic all sucks because anybody any good would be writing professionally? I'm happy to see that concept transcends media.

Segue to that quote:

Any excellent writer should be able to create something worthy of game material for just about any company. Because, you see, good writers are in short supply, and there are rather more John Carmack's in the world than Al Lowe's, or Tim Schafer's for that matter

What's Al Lowe worked on? I'm a Tim Schafer fangirl number 1-OK, and I sort of recognize Lowe's name, but I'm not sure from where. Must have been that listing of vendo-writers, where you put in a couple of quarters in a very interesting place and if the writer doesn't eat your change, you get the Great American Novel/Video Game/Selection Is Sold Out.

Lowe's biggest titles, if I recall correctly, are Callahan's Crosstime Saloon and Freddy Pharkas, Frontier Pharmacist. He's actually pretty funny. I'm sure he's worked on more, but those are the two big ones I can think of.

Also, according to Google, the Leisure Suit Larry series.

He was one of the big names at Sierra, when Sierra was making all those cool King's/Space/Police Quest games. I think he was also one of the martyrs who got fired in 1999 when Sierra OMG! killed the adventure game genre.

SPACE QUEST! I haven't thought about it for years. ~fuzzy nostalgia~ Of course, most of my nostalgia is for fuzzy soft-focussed memories teethgrinding frustration, because I suck at adventure games and couldn't just look up gamefaqs.com back in the stone age.

Heh. I always preferred the (Hero's) Quest For Glory series, but yeah, those games aren't for the short tempered. I don't think I've ever cursed so much in my life as I did back then. Still, I've always felt like I owe my English skills (and the ability to type "open door" faster than anyone in the universe) to Sierra in general, and Roberta Williams and Lori Ann Cole in particular.

*still remembers how King's Quest V was OMGOMGOMG because it used a MOUSE and had LOTS OF COLORS and HOLY CRAP VOICES can we get any more high tech than that?!*

Games created by established companies push the boundaries of excellence by their sheer technical abilities.

My favorite games remain my brothers' friends' homebrew games.

Which is kind of unfortunate. 'Cause they were for my Apple IIc, which I don't have room to set up in my room anymore. =(

Breaking wank!

Over on LJ, VaginaPagina goes kerpow (http://www.livejournal.com/community/vaginapagina/6816400.html?nc=113). Because there's no such thing as having a tight vagina, you're just pretending you do to make other people feel bad.

And the mods have stepped out of the room. . . .

Or what working in the game industry can require. A few years back, I had a game designer recommend I put in an application with his company, since he liked my work and his company was actively looking for female designers.

I didn't take him up on it because it would have meant -

A- Moving to a different country.

B- Moving to a drastically different climate (semi-tropical to "*How* much snow?!?").

C- Earning roughly a third of my current job's pay.

Yup. The couple of people I know (for internet values of "know") who have spouses working in the game industry say that the schedules are punishing and they tend to be overworked, especially at deadline time. I don't blame anyone for preferring not to do that for as little pay as they get.
