Ooh, it's publisher wank!
A small, cute ickle baby wank for your Tuesday.
It seems ironic that there would be wank about erotic romance, doesn't it? But there is.

Over on the blog of Jaynie R., an editor and aspiring erotic romance writer Jaynie stirs up the splooge by posting an anonymous comment bashing Elloras Cave, a leading publisher of romantic erotica.

"It doesn't surprise me. I know for a sad fact that EC doesn't give a damn about
most of their authors. Only the ones who kiss ass.If you aren't an ass kisser, they
have no use for you. just your books. They just love to screw their authors over."

Naturally, many Elloras Cave authors leap in to defend themselves.
The amusing thing is that now there's a sequel to this wank, which has not reached wankiness in itself, but the day is still young.

Edited because I accidentally snipped a bit of the original anonymous wank out of the link.

Mice! Everywhere mice!

If the mouse was going to squeek she should have been a bit more specific. I dislike it when mice don't bring us good gossip. :)

I read that as "The Orb of Ass Rips" first and tried to figure out why on earth anyone would write a book about a farting eye. Or an eye that can see farts.

I need to stop reading badfic.

You don't, of course, need me to point out that The Orb of Ass Rips would probably be a better story than what they put out.

Having read "The Orb of Artiss", I can say with all certainty, that you're right. "The Orb of Ass Rips" probably would make a better story.

God, I know! It's like someone gave the artist some modeling software and said "Go crazy!" and meant it literally. My roommate has a bunch of those and they all suck.

NOT. LOOKING.

One of the local Waldenbooks Borders Express has a bookcase of those things. The covers suck in the suckiest way possible.

I find that's true for a lot of epublishers. I think it's because they don't want to hire real artists. I can always tell the publishers who treat their covers like real marketing tools, and who just want to throw something up as a placeholder.

Sadly, very few epublishers see them as genuine marketing tools. I can think of maybe one or two that don't make me cringe...most of the time.

I know, I work at a Borders and I have to bite my tongue every time somebody brings one to the counter. If there's anything worse than ugly Poser art it's ugly Poser art that's supposed to be sexy. And that means Renderotica is the worst place on the web.

We have a winner!

However, grudge holding and lashing out publicly seems a bit like high school to me. It's almost like gathering a crowd of your posse and asking them to help you kick dirt in the face of your offender. It's holding others hostage to an argument that should be dealt with privately.

Let's hear it for Snacky's Law!

I cruised around the EllorasCave website a little. Dara Joy?? do they "publish" her or were they just referring to her? Has anyone read her? It's like really really REALLY badfic and I cannot understand how any publishing house gave her a contract.

If it makes you feel better, the only romance reader I've ever encountered who liked Rejar was my little sister, whose taste I find questionable. It seems like I read bad reviews for that book on a couple of the major romance novel reviewing websites... I know I did on All about romance.

Clearly, you haven't read many 'stories' from Ellora's Cave.

I'd say about 98% of their entire catalogue is shitcrappy badfic. And I'm being generous.

I mean, we can bitch and moan about EC, but honestly do you think Jaid Black cares? That woman is a freaking millionare. She could care less what we post on this blog.

FWIW, the authors get 35-40% of gross for royalties, and EC is the largest romance erotica epublisher. Some authors have told me that they sell more copies of one book with EC then all other books with all other publishers combined.

IOW, it'll take 50 sales to make approximately $100 and the big EC authors sell thousands of copies.

35-40% of gross? Damn... Well, the writing at EC might not be very good, but the business is. 0_o

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]pepperlandgirl4
2006-01-04 06:00 pm UTC (link)
Yeah, epublishers generally pay a much higher royalty rate because the production costs are generally non-existant, unlike "traditional" publishing. 35-40 is standard, so any epublisher trying to pay a lower rate will be generally ignored by those who know better...

*Whispers* I have. I have a soft spot for romance badfic, though, and the one book I read had some hot steamy smut, which made up, kind of, for a certain, um, lack of decent characters and plot.
