Internet War?

Ebaum's World, that wretched hive of scum and villainy known for its widespread internet thievery, was taken down a peg last night by those they take from. Actually, taken down a whole peg board.

The first war corespondent makes a report, and then metafilter gets in a report.

What's going on?

I think this is a better description, as linked from metafilter:

All this over proof that Lindsay Lohan is a robot?

Um, no. Ebaum's World steals content from other high traffic sites. But what's worse, is they repackage the content adding in their own watermarks and claiming it as theirs. Then they slap up a ton of ads and such, and get paid for the content that isn't theirs.

Example: Someone makes a hilarious flash cartoon the way JibJab was during the elections. Ebaum's World would scoop that off the site, repackage it to look like they were the creators, and then make money off it.

There's more to it, like Ebaum's attacking a site with a weak DoS attack in relatiation for being asked to remove content.

What you're seeing here is the victims made up of several different popular websites, working together to obliterate Ebaum's World off the web.

It just happened to have a shot over the bow of a robot Lohan thing.

That was meant in an 'of all the things to have finally set them off' kind of way.

Somebody's music, flash video, artwork, etc, I could see people getting pissy about.

But fifty publicity shots of Lindsay Lohan?

I almost read that as "fifty pubic shots of Lindsay Lohan", which would be...really interesting.

Huh. I heard about the whole mess last night from scans_daily. It was sort of funny in what felt like a "let's do something stupid to someone who's fucked us over instead of doing something right" way. Couldn't they have done something productive instead?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]photosinensis
2006-01-10 04:36 am UTC (link)
With eBaum's World, no, they really can't do something productive.

The only way to stop him is by using brute force.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

[info]sanguinary
2006-01-10 06:07 am UTC (link)
The problem is that they did try to fix it in a productive way. Dozens, if not hundreds, of creators who had their work stolen attempted to ask Eric to remove their creations. They contacted the company that hosted the website, but they weren't willing to do anything so long as Eric kept paying them enough money to make it worth their while.

And after a while when you keep hiting brick wall after brick wall, you eventually get pissed off to give up on 'productive'.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]annabelle_lee
2006-01-10 07:24 pm UTC (link)
Ah, so that explains it. From what I heard, it sounded more like they asked Eric to pull the content that wasn't his, he did nothing, and then they decided to storm the barricades, so to speak.

Is it sad that I have a huge girlcrush on Lindsay Lohan when she was still "fat" and hot? If she's robot, I could handle that. Robots are sexy too. Especially redheaded busty robots.

Oh, God, you're not the only one. She and Scarlet Johannsen are the only young actresses I really like. I must be the only one in my class who doesn't hate her.
I'm glad she's going to stop being bulemic and doing drugs, too - did you hear about that? Maybe she'll stop beiing a skinny blonde and go back to being a hot redhead.

A dramatic reading of Neil Bauman's emails and phone messages. XD
