Well, I have ventured into wank_report and out I come with this: the feminists, at it again.

First, the OP says..."I am angry that advocating that the position of homemaker is an important and valid occupation in our society is not considered feminist.

Doth ye seek a reply? Oh, granted!

"I have no sympathy for women who tout how "feminist" it is for them to CHOOSE to remain ignorant and unskilled and economically dependent on men. Sorry, it isn't "feminist" when women choose to stay at home and keep house and limit their options while hubby is out advancing his career. It isn't 'feminist' for a woman to whine about how undervalued 'keeping house' is when they make the choice to keep house."

Oh yes, she did.

Apparantly, hypatiaswan pisses some people off pretty bad in there. Notably, [info]the_living_end, who chimes in with a mighty STOP CALLING IT HOUSE KEEPING.

Awww. Pwesious's feelings must be hurting. Ahh wank, the true purpose of LJ.

ETA: I would just like to say, I dont care one way or the other about what is or is not feminist. I just cant believe someone is so OMFG offended about it being called house keeping.

Labels dont define you unless you let them people!

"Unskilled?" *snort* I'd like to see her try to do MY job for a week. Raising two kids is a full-time job in and of itself; add onto that the household management, including financial management. Unskilled my ass. Just because my skills are undervalued doesn't mean that I don't have them. And don't get me started on "ignorant." Just...ARGH.

...sorry. Sore subject.

And if I'd had a raging desire to be known as a feminist, this would've killed it. It's like Christianity--if it wasn't for the people that practice it, I might actually want to be a part of it.

I am neither ignorant or unskilled, having a degree and a background in teaching. I chose to stay home and raise my son. Being a feminist does not mean you spit on men and become the opressive force you decry. Being a feminist means you can choose to stay home or go to work, because unlike the women before you, you worked to get to a place where you could make that choice.

My grandmother wasn't given the choice of working out of the house. Grandpa worked, she raised kids. That's just how it was because women working outside the home were looked down on.

My mother raced cars and wanted to be an engineer who developed new car models. But she was told she could go to school to be a teacher or nurse and that's it. Anything else would mean she was turning her back on her family. She went into nursing. But she had that chance to get out and change herself.

I got to go to school for anything I wanted, was encouraged to go out and work in whatever profession I wanted, and was supported in my decision to raise my son at home.

That is the feminist movement. Going forward and giving choices to those that didn't have any.

These power feminists just give the real ones a bad name.

Now someone hand me a tissue, I seem to have let off a hose here.

Like most of the Brokeback Mountain wank, this one is caused by the innocent assumption that people have infinite choice over how to live their lives, uncomplicated by conflicting desires and having no consequences on the range of future choices.

Also? Staying home and raising kids and making it possible for the other partner to be a careerist isn't, actually, a job for the stupid, illeducated, and dependant. Sometimes that partnership is stronger, and both partners more competent and empowered, than when both are working at shit jobs that leave no time for strategic thinking about child rearing and education for the whole family.

I really, REALLY hate it when so-called "feminists" bitch that women who make a choice aren't feminist just because that choice is traditional. If a woman chooses to stay in the kitchen and make her husband pie because she wants to, she's feminist. She knows her options, and she's choosing the one she wants to follow. There's nothing "dependant" about that. She's making her own choice, and not letting anyone else, INCLUDING OTHER FEMINISTS, decide her life for her.

As I understand where a great deal of feminist theory stands now, blaming women for making the best choices available to them within an oppressive society is, in itself, anti-feminist. The question is not how to get all women out into the white-collar work force; it's how to make sure that whatever choices women make do not punish them any more than the same choices would punish a man of equal social position. One might point out that the idea of the stay at home, non-working mother is, in fact, a creation of the 20th century, and did not exist prior to that for any but the most well-to-do families. At that point, one starts getting into classism, and then people accuse one of being Marxist, so one is better off making a cup of tea and reading Fandom Wank.

So, according to hypatiaswan, if a woman who inherited half of Texas from her daddy decides she wants to stay at home and raise her kids while her husband works she's... feminist, because she's not dependant on her husband. So she's not a feminist because she made the choice to do what was best for herself/ her family, she's a feminist because her husband isn't going to be able to put her out on the street.

Way to be classist, little woman, way to be classist.

Feminism is about CHOICES!!!!!!!!!&$^&*$^*^$*^$&*$$!%!!!!!!!! That's it. CHOICES without doing what's expected or doing it because of pressure.

A SAHM isn't necessarily unskilled nor should she be undervalued. I'd like to see some those assholes be a SAHM. My mother did it for a long time. Drove me batshit too because that's what mommies do. Heh.

this is just so offensive and closeminded. which is probably becuase she doesn't have a phd like yourself, and thus you don't respect her.
"Closeminded", "offensive", "respect", "obviously"? milk_000's cred, in my eyes, is dropping by the second.
Anyone remember that episode of Family Guy? The one where Lois is accosted by a hyperfeminist for being a housewife, and then Lois points out that feminism is about choice?

Haha, I think REAL ignorance here is saying that women who choose to stay at home are ignorant and unskilled. I remember when I was younger (the know-it-all ages of 13-16), I was ranting to my mother about how sexist homemakers were and that women should NEVER, EVER stay home and do that anymore. My mother's response? She looked at me and said "I CHOSE to stay home to take care of you and your brother, so that someone would be HERE for you." I hadn't even considered, while ranting at her, that my mother had been a homemaker my entire life.

I realized what an ignorant little shit I'd been and had a good, long think about my (admittedly) parroted perspectives I'd gained from reading books that my mother had ironically recommended to me. I realized no one had FORCED my mother to stay home, or she hadn't done it because of society, but she'd done it because that's what she'd wanted to do. My brother and I are both grown up now, and now she works with younger children at my former elementary school. She likes kids, and has been doing what she likes all along. That isn't unfeminist!

I can't understand this kind of "feminism." It gives me a headache.

Yeah. Power to the homemakers. I just wonder what they do if their marriage breaks down and they want to rejoin the work force but they can't find a good job because they've been raising kids and cleaning house for the past 18 years.

I just cant believe someone is so OMFG offended about it being called house keeping.

Oh, I don't know. Maybe it's because 'house keeping' is such a minimal part of what a stay at home mom actually does.

I don't believe that feminism is solely about "choice." If that were the case, then we could all choose to be victims and label it feminism.

Yes, it's only about choices that other people deem fit for the women to pick from.

Gee, wait, that kinda sounds like patriarchy, doesn't it?

ETA: I would just like to say, I dont care one way or the other about what is or is not feminist. I just cant believe someone is so OMFG offended about it being called house keeping.

Good that you are not the one who gets to decide what people point and laugh about or discuss in the comments.
