Doesn't *everyone* know Latin? Geez!
I never thought I'd see a wank about gastric lavage outside of an E.R. fan forum, but there you go.

[info]gummyneko posts to [info]spo_prevention about a dog that came into her workplace that had gotten into the wacky tobaccy. Unsurprisingly, this causes significant problems for the dog (and is yet another reminder that my keeping mine in tins is a really good idea).

But the wank isn't over drugs. Oh, no, it's over semantics.

It starts off okay - since [info]gummyneko's used complicated terms like gastric lavage and bradycardia, the reasonable suggestion is made that perhaps she should edit for a lay audience. This causes [info]sopay to get really offended for some reason, which leads to escalation, then mod smackage made worse by [info]sopay's taking offense at the mod smackage that goes ON and ON, and my favorite, [info]teratologist's comment that, hey, it's not like these terms are hard for the average layperson who watches daytime talk shows and knows a Romance language 'cause the Francophile Oprah demographic is HUGE. Or something.

Then [info]doberkim gets annoyed by the use of kilograms amid allegations of Americentrism and more semantic wank. Which causes more mod wank.

It's not huge as wanks go, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in variety. And all this over a grand total of two technical terms.

It's not a huge surprise that someone might request you or another post to explain medical terms, as not everyone is a vet tech nor a medical doctor. It's also not a difficult request. This sure seems like a lot of whining for something so simple.

And the award for common sense goes to [info]silverblaidd!

I'm still trying to figure out how the meaning of gastric lavage is "obvious."

Well, I kind of find it so, but I'm a language geek. "Lav" always = washing, to me.

The only reason I know what a gastric lavage is is because I read James Herriot books where he describes shoving the tube into the cow.

Of course that doesn't mean I know how to pronounce gastric lavage. Is it "LEH-vij" or "lah-VAJ?" Knowing me it would come out "gastric cow tube thing."

Whee, Herriot. I grew up on those books, and I still didn't know what a gastric lavage was.

As a watcher of Energency Room, it's neither, assuming they pronounce it correctly. It's French. The second comes close to the actual pronounciation.

I like how [info]gummyneko's edit all but comes out and says, "I'm sorry that you're all such plebes and aren't familiar with terms I deal as part of my job. Here's a definition, and did I mention that you're all stupid for not knowing this?"

I also enjoyed the conversion rate thread. I have no idea what my 9-month-old golden retriever weighs in pounds or kilograms right now. I only know that he's BIG.

first, most people have no idea what their animal weighs in kgs, so having them know a toxic dose per kg is something most people sadly cannot convert into useful information

UH, HELLO. YES IT DOES.

So I am assuming this doesn’t apply to the mods b/c? I hardly think that’s fair.

It's funny that she whines about people not knowing medical terms, yet she does not know that mod = RULER OF YOUR FUCKING UNIVERSE.

I think this chick needs the fear of mod put into her. That'll set her straight.

Maybe because on a daily basis I have to break down technical terms into things much simpler, it's pretty much automatic at this point. While anyone can go look up Static or Dynamic IP, it's just courtesy to explain things more plainly.

After all in my line of work, if people were more fluent with computerese, I'd be out of a job.

Blahhhh so much bitchery over nothing. Internet, you never fail to amaze me.

WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED (in Choose Your Own Adventure format):

Jane: blahblahgastriclavageblahbradycardiablahhypoblah
Sally: Oh my goodness, I don't seem to understand these words!

Do you....
A. Look them up? (Go to A...)
B. Ask what they mean? (Go to B...)
C. Fill up your special attack bar?(Go to C...)

A.

Sally surfs the world wide webiverse and easily finds out exactly what Jane was spewing on about. She also finds and prints out a pie recipe, which enables her to bake the sweet confection for her family, strengthening the amount of love flowing through their home.

THE END

B.

Sally: Golly, I don't seem to know these words. Could you explain them to me?
Jane: Oh my goodness! Certainly. Now I shall edit my post to reflect this change in elucidation!
Sally: Aw!
Jane: Aw!
Hugging commences.

THE END

The snobbery in that post is just amazing.

Here's the thing [info]teratologist is completely fucking missing: breaking terms down into their component parts from Romance languages etc. doesn't always work for medical terminology.

Example: photophobia has nothing to do with photography or fear.
